Introduction: How to Make Squinkies Into Earrings

Squinkies are kids toys. They’re little, Polly Pocket sized, figures made out of rubber that come in everything from Disney princesses to Hot Wheels. They are small, affordable, and you can make tons of fun combinations.

I love Squinkies and finding new ways to make jewelry from items you no longer use. This is a fun way to turn your little girls toys into earrings when she stops playing with them. It’s also a fun project for you to do together. It’s also a great project when babysitting to pass the time and keep girls entertained.

Caution: Sharp objects involved, don’t allow children to do without supervision.

Materials Needed:
• Squinkies
• Needle (I use a yarn darning needle)
• Beads (at least 2 small others can be optional)
• Earring hooks
• Clear stretch cord
• Scissors or jewelry wire cutters
• Rubber jar opener (optional, but useful)

Step 1: Step 1

Choose 2 squinkies that you want to use. Since you probably don’t have two of the same I choose two that I like together, like Woody and Jessie from Toy Story or two different Barbies.

Step 2: Step 2

Cut your stretch cord to a working length, usually about three inches.

Step 3: Step 3

Step 3A: Tie one end of your cord onto the needle.

Step 3B: Securely tie/fashion a bead onto the opposite end of your cord. This end will go in the bottom of the Squinkie to keep it from coming apart easily.

Step 4: Step 4

Using your needle make a hole straight through the Squinkie. Starting at the bottom, so that the bead is hidden by the hole that is already part of the Squinkie.

Note: the hole must be big enough for your cord to go through, which is why I choose to use a yarn darner.

Note 2: If it is difficult to pull the needle and cord through you can either push it through on a hard surface (like a coffee table) or use one of the rubber kitchen things for opening jars (I apologize for not knowing what they are called) Pictured below.

Step 5: Step 5

Untie or cut the end of the cord from the needle.

Step 6: Step 6

Add on your beads to the cord on top of the Squinkie.

Note: If you just want a simple Squinkie earring you can skip this step.

Step 7: Step 7

Securely fascine the earring hook to the end of the stretch cord. I usually tie mine on three to four times and pull till completely tight.

Note: I ALWAYS pull at both ends fairly hard before moving on to ensure that the earring will not come apart.

Step 8: Step 8

Cut off remaining cord. Leaving you with a finished earring.

Step 9: Step 9

Repeat steps 2 through 7 using the second Squinkie.

Step 10: And That's It!

You should now have a very cute and fun pair of earrings for your daughter, or anyone else to wear! And this is just the beginning of what you can make. You can try different beads and designs to create a variety and you can also think of other ways to make Squinkies into bracelets and necklaces as well!
