Introduction: How to Make a Cheap Blowgun

Picture of How to Make a Cheap Blowgun

This instructable will demonstrate how to build a blowgun, blow darts and a quiver using only a curtain rod and various other household items.

This is my first instructable, so bear with me

Step 1: Materials

Picture of Materials

- Small curtain rod (the kind used in doorways)
- Duct tape (of course)
- Drinking straws
- Toothpicks
- Modeling clay
- Film canister (filled halfway with modeling clay)

- Dremel (hacksaw will work)
- Scissors

Step 2: Cutting the Curtain Rod

Picture of Cutting the Curtain Rod

Most curtain rods have divots at the end that allow the length to change.
These must go, or they would obstruct the path of the dart.

Remove them using the cutting attachment on your Dremel (or just use a hacksaw)

Step 3: Finishing the Rod

Picture of Finishing the Rod

Most curtain rods are just a wrapped piece of sheet metal, meaning there is a gap where the two sides meet. This will need to be covered or the pressure that propels the dart will dissapate out of this gap.

Covering the gap is simple, just get a strip or duct tape the length of your rod and cover the gap with it .

Step 4: Making the Darts

Picture of Making the Darts

To make the dart all you need is a straw, some modeling clay, toothpicks, cotton twine, and duct tape.

- First, cut a one inch section from the straw
- Second, tear off a piece of modeling clay a force it into the section of straw you just cut
- Then take a toothpick and force it into the clay-filled straw
- Cut about 10 one inch sections of twine
- Tear off a 1-2 inch strip of duct tape, and attach all the ends of the string to one side of the tape
- Wrap the tape around the back of the straw. All the strings should be bunched together.

Make as many as you see fit.

Step 5: Makeing the Quiver

Picture of Makeing the Quiver

Making the quiver is easy. All you need is a film canister and some modeling clay

- Fill the film canister up halfway with clay
- Attach to main rod with some duct tape

Holds about nine darts

Step 6: Your Done!

Now go find a good target and fire away!

Be careful, will stick in human flesh.

i know its a bit old, but why not use bamboo skewers? just filter them for straightness.

Anyone know any material i could use as the "barrel" cause i cant use sharp objects and i dont think siccors will cut metal

3500 (author)Name goes Here2010-12-05

go to home depot. in one section they should have 3 foot metal steel tubing with a 1 cm diameter. its the perfect barrel.

You could get a long cardboard tube, like the ones found in giftwrap.

mrelement (author)2010-08-09

thats sucks big

ol987986 (author)2009-10-16

why not just get a maccy d's straw and blow chewed up paper thru it?

Dr.Big (author)2009-09-17

i got oss for bringing these to school ( out of school suspension OSS.)

benlee1114 (author)2009-08-11

couldn't u just use paper clips, staplers or needles or sumthing? by the way its nice! :D :P

defan (author)2009-05-04

brilliant site but don't now how to use it (please tell me how to use it)

kablamo (author)2009-01-13

it took me about 5 min. to make it. and it very effective :D gj

ichipoodle (author)2007-07-16

Gmastefluffy, i do agree with you. There are way too many blowgun instructables. HOWEVER, that being said, at least have the decency to acknowledge Corteztheflame's efforts for putting up this fine instructable ( i really do like it )

nkk07 (author)ichipoodle2008-01-09

theres too many knex guns too 99999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 ar really baaad

halogirl (author)nkk072008-11-12

thats a lot :)

kibbler (author)ichipoodle2008-10-19

How could you? Blowguns are silent, powerful, and lethal. Do you like to hurt people? Then use a poison dart.

grut125 (author)2008-09-15

it probly would be better to use a small width pvc pipe instead of a flimsy stray

akinich (author)2008-09-04

hey send me this dart instructions thanks

Arianovan (author)2008-08-14

You and I both use a dremal tool, coolio.

Arianovan (author)Arianovan2008-08-14

This is actually quite ingenious. Nice job

yellow elephant (author)2007-03-13

where is your instructable kruzer?

yellow elephant (author)2007-03-13

i use a sonic's straw because they are big.

casvandegoor (author)2007-03-11

looks good

silentdeath (author)2007-03-01

i may try this for my science project

lukeRAMBO (author)2007-02-05

ive built the same thing ages ago and i used it at school with soft datrs to shoot my friends pretty slick

Gmastefluffy (author)2007-02-04

Im sorry , is anyone else sick of blow gun instructables?

--Thatguy-- (author)2007-02-04

this is better than urs oko, i kno from look that ur quiver isnt that good and putty would hold better than sponge, ur too full of urself

okoshima (author)2007-02-02

my quiver is better, also the darts suck, and the blowgun sucks, use pvc pipe and about 4/5 feet of it. darts with toothpic tips come on they will last 2/3 shots tops, there are better on here

Corteztheflame (author)okoshima2007-02-02

I tried your sponge method, and the darts kept falling out

Corteztheflame (author)okoshima2007-02-02

the first dart i made has lasted at least 100 shots

Maybe you should read the little red/pink box under the comment box again?

Weissensteinburg (author)2007-02-01

That is..SO COOL How long is the rod you used?

About a foot long

That's it? Im defnitly trying this.

--Thatguy-- (author)2007-02-01

KOOL ill try that soon, im going to get some materials and make some things then put them on this site, i only just made this account and i hav loads of ideas ;)
