Granted, my pain threshold is rather low, I found it fairly hot. Also, I would second the recommendation of a baking pan of some sort to start the angle. The best I had was a pizza box. I went through 3 records completely mangled before I got it down.

How hot does the vinyl get? Can I handle it right away or should I wear oven mitts?

I handle it right away, maybe bouncing it from hand to hand at first. Depends on your pain threshold I suppose.
