How to Make a Holiday Snow Globe

Out of the many snow globes on instructables, I wasn't to keen on making another instructable basically making the same thing. But, what the heck! This snow globe is great to be given as a gift or to keep to yourself in self accomplishment.

Step 1: Materials

To make a snow globe you will need to gather: * A mason or jam jar (with a reliable lid) * Some Christmas themed toys (or other themed for different occasions) *Hot Glue Gun *Glitter * Water (A member has suggesting using distilled baby oil instead of water to enable the glitter to fall more slowly) * Plastic Decor Snow Flakes-Optional

Is the water in a snowglobe suppose to sink or float. I've added bunches of glycerin and it still floats instead of sinks.....it's snow upward instead of downward. Any body have any ideas?

well, water doesn't sink or float silly but the glitter and snowflakes are suppose to slowly sink to the bottom of the globe after you shake it up. i've tried this and personally I think it works better with baby oil instead of water because the glitter and stuff falls slower through baby oil -vs- water. Any baby oil works, got mine from the $ store

I haven't tried it myself, but I read somewhere that by using glycerin rather than water, the floaty bits will float longer.

I also watched a craft maven make a little flat pillow insert for greeting card and she used thinned hair gel to float sequins in it. I have no idea how long it would last though.

Try using methanol instead of water, its viscosity is around 1/2 that of water and therefore should allow the flakes to spin and dance longer. acetone would work too but would probably eat up the toys and glitter.

just use gasoline, then you can stuff a rag in it for a molotov cocktail on new years. Crafts are fun.

A Holy Day is when people are tolerant of others that are just trying to be kind. Yes, we do get it.

The word Holiday is a shortened form of Holy Day, so if you don't believe in Christmas why celebrates its Holy Day?

Because Christmas is not a holiday of a truly Holy origin. In fact, Christmas itself hasn't even been celebrated for that long. In America, the whole religious back story is just a way to feel less guilty about the commercialization of a "Holy Day."

its not? since when? there have always been celebrations for the winter solstice but christmas is a christian holiday. even though its now known that jesus christ wasnt born around christmas, the holiday is supposed to be a celebration of the birth of jesus. hence the word CHRISTmas. see the word CHRIST?? if its not of religious origin, then explain why athiests have, for so long, been trying to get the word 'Christ' taken out. its been called christmas since the 1600s. its people now days that have taken the religious factor out.

There are seven letters in "Holiday" and seven letters in "Holy Day"... this is barely "shortened"... The Fourth of July is also called a "Holiday" in America... care to comment on it's "religious" significance? What about Memorial Day and Labor Day?

The "reason for the season" is celestial mechanics and orbital tilt... the 21st through the 25th is when the nights stop getting longer and become ever so noticeably shorter. It's called a "Solstice"... Some primitive peoples considered this change a time to celebrate, certain other peoples co-opted those celebrations into their own.

Whatever you want to call it, it is a time when people in the northern latitudes have celebrations for one reason or another. Be peaceful and joyful in whatever form of celebration you prefer and be happy for those who celebrate in a different fashion. This is really not a forum for airing or arguing religious views.

Yeah I don't think the water will evaporate because the lid is sealed on tight but what I did forget to put on the instructable is to seal the lid with some kindof glue.

the water will still evaporate. my mom collects christmas globes and each year the air bubble gets bigger. tap water tends to get cloudy. i'd use distilled.

i do it every year. saves money and the recipients appreciate them more. tried to go the easy route and shop one year. my niece said if my arms aren't broken i have no excuse so get sewing.

You should put a ring of hot melt glue on the lid before you screw the jar on so it will get a better seal against the glass :)

Great idea and nice one to do with kids too.
You know, you could instead of water use mineral oil better known as baby oil and use that. Because its more dense, the things in the water will move more slowly. Only down side is that if the oil leaks, it can be messy.
