Much to my husband's chagrin, I often experiment with recipes. Sometimes they are failures, but not to the point of becoming inedible. I recently made him Mountain Dew jelly with success so I thought I would use the same principles to make a pie out of Cherry 7-Up. Here is what happened . . .

Step 1: Crush Cookies

I used iced animal cookies but I think graham crackers or vanilla wafers, etc would work too. I like to use what I have leftover and substitute when needed. I used about 2 cups of the small iced animal cookies.

excellent save and the pictures are mouthwatering. I'm wondering if you are just going to add the flour anyway if you could skip the 2 refer steps and mix it up all at once? do the cookies need that much time to soak or will the baking part be enough? or like bread pudding- just a bit of a soak......and I love fruit cake too. yum

I think you might need lemon juice for pectin, but i'm not sure.

Excellent! An adventure with a story line. An experiment in disaster going good. And photo documented you have the traits of a journalist. Good for you! I enjoyed this as i rarely finish reading a recipe instructable.

I love the way your writing is so descriptive and the pie-cake is just fabulous!

Interesting...

You took some excellent pictures too.

The question is, can I turn this pie-cake into a pie-cake-flan? :P
locodiego (author) in reply to Spl1nt3rC3llAug 4, 2008. 9:31 AM
A flan fan . . . have you seen the movie "Envy" with Ben Stiller? They all like flan in that movie . . .
Spl1nt3rC3ll in reply to locodiegoAug 5, 2008. 12:46 PM
Yes. I've seen it at least twice, but it's been a while. I could use some flan in a tube right now...

Aww, I was hoping for at least one more thing to go wrong for another quick solution.

IBLE For Mountain DEW JELLO!!! I know this has only a marginal amount to do with the current I-ble, but I'd love to make me some Dew Jelly...

Though this seems really awesome, THE CAKE IS A LIE! But it does seem pretty great. 3.5 Stars.
goobyalus in reply to saites2001Aug 4, 2008. 9:06 AM
The pie is a lie! The cake is real! Even though you only get to see it at the end...
locodiego (author) in reply to goobyalusAug 4, 2008. 9:18 AM
What happened is I set out to try and make the pie for the contest and after it was apparent that the pie was not going to work I quit documenting it. I figured there was no sense in getting the camera back out if there wasn't going to be an entry. The pictures end for the "pie" portion in the cherry and whipped cream shot and then begin again after I added the flour mixture and baked it. I just figured I had put so much work into it already I had to salvage it and decided to enter it as a pie-cake, so I started taking pics again but I do wish I would have taken a pic of me adding the flour mixture.

This was a beautiful save! I've found that my "Oh dear lord, what do I do now?" experiments often turn into things I keep on the rotating regular menu. :) Go you!

i wish i was as imaginative as you when it comes to desserts =[
id have given up when it didnt settle xD
tercero says: Aug 4, 2008. 6:07 AM
Looks good. But. You should try and think of ways of reducing the calorie and carb count on this. Seriously. It's really unhealthy to eat like this.
thinker in reply to terceroAug 4, 2008. 9:54 AM
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA
=]
this cake has more fruit in it then what i normally eat at my meals, also, i like carbs
carbs are GOOD FOR YOU. the provide a vital source of energy for the body, if your body doesnt use as much energy as they provide, then they get stored as fat, which later on can turn into muscle, muscle which needs energy ergo CARBS! even if you dont want to build muscle though, carbohydrates provide the body with vital energy, a slice of this late at night is a brilliant end to the day, and if its as carb rich as u say, may help u get to sleep, and the energy given off by its digestion will make u wake up well and refreshed.
if you dont use as much energy as you eat, then yes, it will be stored as fat, but thats not the puddings fault, almost all foods are fine in moderation, and ones like this are generally the ones i prefer.
but if you dislike how many carbs and calories this has
go bake your own cake =] if its as tasty it should be more popular =]
locodiego (author) in reply to terceroAug 4, 2008. 9:30 AM
I hope you can tell from my pic that I do think about what I eat. I certainly don't recommend eating like this all the time but really the recipe isn't as bad as many other things. According to my nutritional calculator each serving (cut like a cheesecake in 16 thin pieces) contains the following: 387 calories 8 grams of fat 78 grams of carbs but here is the kicker . . . 56 grams of sugar! To put that into perspective there are 39 grams of sugar ONE CAN of coca-cola. So . . . if you are going to make and eat some of this pie-cake I suggest skipping the value-meal at the local fast food joint that day/week/month or however often you eat it.

ooh, this looks quite delicous :] and mountain dew jelly you say? instructible please? :D
locodiego (author) in reply to Omega192Aug 4, 2008. 9:39 AM
I probably won't have the need to make it for a while since I canned about 7 jars and therefore won't be taking pictures for an instructable. But here is a link to where I got the recipe and I will upload a picture to my library of what it looks like when it is done.

mmmm-this sounds absolutely delicious. Part of its charm is the decadence involved!! Congratulations!! Your husband is very lucky.
locodiego (author) in reply to Naomi2969Aug 4, 2008. 9:21 AM
Thanks. He ate a piece of this and said, "I like chocolate." My brother was half-way through his piece and commented, "Tastes like fruitcake." He must like fruitcake because he finished it quick.

I really like this instructable... I like how your clever experimentation led to something cool eventually :P

This seems like a neat cake. It is always nice when someone creates their own recipe. Great job!

A battle between the chef and the confection that did not want to be... Then end results look delicious though...
