Introduction: How to Make a Watermelon Rose

Watermelon is not only delicious food, it can also be used in various carving ideas. Let me show you today one of these ideas - how to carve a watermelon rose. You can do it and surprise somebody you love. So, let's begin.

Step 1: Materials Needed

You will need:

  • One watermelon
  • Carving knife
  • Paring knife
  • Chopping board
  • Small scotch tape
  • Plate
  • Watermelon and melon balls
  • Grapes
  • Carved melon leaf (optional)

Step 2: Peel Away the Green Part of the Watermelon Rind

Wash the watermelon, make sure it is clean. In order to make a flat bottom we need to cut off one side of the watermelon (about two or three inches).

Peel away the green part of the watermelon rind using the carving knife. Be careful in using this knife, do not harm your hands. Peel off watermelon green rind leaving the white round shape. Don't worry if this white shape is not perfectly white. If you peel away too much of the white part of rind and there are some red areas visible, no problem, it will not be visible later.

Step 3: Cut Out a Circle

Now grab the scotch tape, place it on the center of our carved white shape, draw and cut out a circle using your paring knife. Once you have cut out this circle, use the paring knife to cut out one more bigger circle around the first one. Then remove the white part of rind between two circles. This ring will be the center of our rose.

Step 4: Cutting Out Petals

Start by using your paring knife and cut out a little piece of white rind in the shape of a crescent near the circle. Then cut out one more larger white rind piece near the first cut and remove it. This process seems to be not easy when you try it for the first time. Refer to the photos I posted for a better understanding.

Step 5: Center of Our Rose

The closer to the center you go, the smaller the cuts and petals should become.

Step 6: Triangles

Use your paring knife and cut out little triangles around a rose.

Step 7: Decoration

Place your rose at the plate. Decorate the rose with grapes, watermelon and melon balls or anything else edible you have at home.

Step 8: Melon Leaf (Optional)

Give your rose more colorful look by adding one more little thing. I have to say it was my mistake to add just a carved melon leaf. I think it will be much better to add a post card with "I Love You" words.
