In this instructable we tell you how to make seed balls out of natural ingredients. These seed balls contain guilds of seeds (seeds that grow well together) and can be dropped wherever you wish to add a miniature garden. Our seed balls include Calendula, Poppies, Hollyhocks, Kale, Queen Anne's Lace, and Chicory seeds.

Step 1: Step 1

First add five parts clay...

Step 2: Step 2

Then add three parts compost...

Step 3: Step 3

Add one part seeds and combine with enough moisture to make the mixture sculpable but not squishy...

Step 4: Step 4

Shape the mixture a tablespoon or two at a time into whatever you like. Be sure to smooth and not leave cracks or your art will break apart as it dries.

Step 5: What Do We Do With Them?

This is a great way to teach kids that a little dirt never hurt! The whole family can distribute the seed balls and check back to see how each miniature garden is progressing. After they are placed the rain will melt the clay, releasing the seeds. The compost will nourish the seeds as they grow, perfect! At the end of the season you can harvest new seeds and begin again. Enjoy:)
I think this is also reffered to as gorilla gardening, Way cool huh? Thanks for sharing your Instructable
Sounds like eco - terrorism to me .... Kudzu , Bamboo, Poison Oak, Ivy , and maybe even bundled with crazy ants .....
Use permaculture principles or agroecological design (see www.agroecology.org/ ) and please, please please understand that the tremendous potential of seedballs comes with responsibilities: I work in ecological restoration in Australia and people that wanted to do good - feeding their family - screwed up big time: it's all about species selection. Do not propagate non-native species, please.
Hi,
I am very interested in gathering information on Seedballs.
Where do you live ?
You used grey clay with success ?
Any idea of your germination rate ?
Take care
Thanks
sites.google.com/site/onseedballs/

We live in Iowa, and are waiting for the spring to distribute the seed balls. Learned the recipe from a permaculture teacher who has used it all over the country with success for years, so I anticipate no problems....
if your town uses auto watering you can start little flower gardens all over. I brodcast flower seeds everywhere and more often than not i see the results a month or 2 later! Also i have ninja planted avocado seeds in many towns, just make sure to put them in an area that they can grow into trees without being chopped.
Little agricultural bombs to fight against our cement prison!
