How to Make the MetaVengeance Paper Airplane

Fast, long range and small, the MetaVengeance is an improved variant of the UltraVengeance redesigned with features derived from the HelioVulcan.

The MetaVengeance was developed to improve performance of the Vengeance series while retaining general commonality with previous variants. In testing the adoption of the HelioVulcan's canard design proved to be a good fit for the fast MetaVengeance prototype. The change in canard design increased weight in the nose and decreased lift gave the aircraft better high speed handling. After success in flight testing, the MetaVengeance was approved for publication.

Step 1: Materials

Required:
1 Piece of 8.5 by 11 inch Paper

Tape

Scissors

Pencil

Ruler

Step 2: Length and Corner Folding; Cutting the Trailing Edge

Take your paper and fold it along its length. Then pull the corners on one end and fold them into the center. Then unfold the pair and cut them away along the crease. You may then discard these pieces. Proceed to the other side and make corner folds here.

Step 3: Nose Folding

Fold the corners of the paper into the center crease on each side. After doing this, pull the creases that has resulted from the previous folds into the center crease. After doing this, unfold them then pull the edges into the crease as shown.

Pull the forward inner edges back to the outer crease as shown on each side then tuck them under themselves. After doing this, unfold them and pull their creases inward as shown in the 14th and 15th photographs. After doing that, pull the tips of the paper down into the inner creases as shown in the 16th and 17th photographs. With this done, restore the creases and fold these sections in over themselves along the creases twice.

Step 4: Canard and Nose Folding

Fold the previous folds along the existing creases as shown, then pull the overhanging paper back away from the center crease. Repeat on the other side. Pull the tip of the nose back until its tips meet the apex of the diamond; then tuck the edges of the paper underneath the other layers after pulling the portion that will not fit back forward once again as shown.

Pull the nose back to the rear tip of the paper and fold it to make a crease. Measure 1 inch back from this fold along the center crease and make a mark. At this mark, fold the paper back forward and fold again. After making a crease, unfold the new nose fold and fold the corners into the new fold as shown. After this is done, fold the nose forward again to lock these new corner folds into place.

Step 5: Canard, Wing, Tail and Winglet Folding; Taping

Fold down the canards whilst keeping their leading edges aligned with the nose to maintain an angle of incidence of zero degrees. Measure 0.875 inches above the center crease and make marks at this distance at the front and back of the paper as shown. Connect these two marks with a fold on each side to create the wings.

After making the wing folds, fold the rear fuselage upward so its trailing edge forms a perpendicular angle to the wing root folds made by the previous step. After folding and creasing the tail, reverse the folds and pull the paper through as shown in the 10th photograph.

With the tail in place, fold the wings upward again and fold the wingtips down. The edges of the airfoil are your reference; fold the paper so that the outer edge of the airfoil trailing edge sits over its more inboard part as shown in the 11th and 12th photographs and repeat on the other side.

Apply tape where designated to complete the airframe.

Step 6: Flight

Like the UltraVengeance and other similar shaped darts, the MetaVengeance is an aircraft which tends to fly in the direction its pointed at high speed. Launches should be done at moderately high speed at a neutral or positive attitude. Additional applicable surfaces include elevators, ailerons, air brakes, and a trimmable rudder. Enjoy!
