Introduction: How to Paint a Sky (space)

Now, this is how to make a painting. However, for this, you need to have basic knowledge of acrylics, layering acrylics, basic drawing, and colour theory.

The painting I did is fairly simple, and doesn't take more than an hour.

Step 1: Step 1: Sketching

The first thing you're going to do is sketch what you're going to paint. For the painting I did, the sketch is fairly simple. Just a horizon, a tree, a nebula and a planet. Everything is labelled for easy reference.

Step 2: Step 2: Start Painting!

At this point, you may transfer your sketch onto your canvas, or just use the sketch as a reference. I did not transfer my sketch onto my canvas, however doing so may be preferable for others.

For this painting, I started with the background. I used Diox purple, cobalt blue, and pthalo blue, and titanium white for this part.

Just look up pictures of space to help you.

Now, to the painting.

The first thing I did was mix some diox purple and some mars black to get a deep hue of purple. I then added this abpve the horizon, leaving a space for a planet.

Step 3: Step 3: the Nebula and Planet

What you're going to do next is mix cobalt blue with a little white. Now mix a lighter value, and a darker value with the cobalt blue.

Take the medium hue and lay down a base colour for the planet. Lay down the darker hue in the corner, and the lighter hue towards the edge of the planet. Blend these colours evenly, then on the very edge, put some titanium white.

for the nebula again, make three shades of dioxazine purple, a medium, light, and darker shade. make circular motions with the the brush, with each colour until satisfied. Let dry, or dry with a hairdryer.

Step 4: Step 4: the Horizon and Tree

This last part is easy. Take your mars black and fill in the entire bottom portion of the painting up to the horizon.

(for this part I suggest looking up tree silhouettes)

In the middle of the horizon, with the black, paint a silhouette of a tree.

Step 5: Step 5: Final Touches

Now, just touch up little bits and piece of your painting you are unhappy with, and sign it.

with that, you have just created a painting!
