Introduction: How to Replace Toyota Corolla (1998-2002) Gauge Lights
Tutorial on how to replace or change the color of the gauge lights in your car.
Note: These instructions are specific to a 1998-2002 Toyota Corolla. However, the same basic principle applies to most car models.
Replacement bulb kit (color of your choice)
Step 1: Remove the Front Panel
Unscrew the two screws located above the speedometer on the underside of the overhang. Slide the panel out.
Step 2: Unfasten the Gauge Cluster
Note: The gauge cluster is the panel that has the speedometer and other gauges.
Unscrew the three screws holding the gauge cluster in place (one above and two below as indicated in the picture). Pull the gauge cluster out.
WARNING: The gauge cluster panel is connected to numerous wires. Pull it out slowly. Be careful not to destroy the wiring. You will only be able to pull it out approximately 12 inches.
Step 3: Remove the Bulb Sockets
Remove the three big bulb sockets by rotating them counterclockwise approximately 30 degrees, then pull out.
Step 4: Replace the Bulbs
Note: This is the fun part. You can change the color of your gauge lights by replacing the factory bulbs with bulbs of the color of your choice. If you just wish to replace a burnt out bulb and not the color, use the standard replacement bulbs.
Remove the bulbs from the sockets by pulling them straight out. Place the new bulbs in the old sockets exactly the opposite way you pulled them apart. Push the new bulb and socket combinations back into the motherboard and twist it 30 degrees clockwise.
Step 5: Reassemble the Gauge Cluster
Put the gauge cluster back into its original position. Make sure to line the screw holes up properly. Screw the three screws back in.
Step 6: Reassemble the Front Panel
Making sure to realign the two screw holes properly, slide the front panel back into its original position. Screw the two screws back into place.
Step 7: Finished!
Turn the car on to see how it looks!
