How to Survive Rocket Attacks

 by strambeer

I live with my wife and children in the Southern Israeli city of Beer Sheva. Recently the city has received rocket fire from Hamas terrorists living in Gaza. The intention of this instructable is not to be political but to offer a "How to Survive Guide" in the event you might be under rocket fire.

This video was posted by university student Morag Agmon.  The rocket landed in an area between the student dorms and pubs.

Step 1: Determine your City's proximity

Understanding where your city is located is important to your survival. This will determine the type of rocket and its range. A siren or "Color Red Warning" will alert you to an incoming rocket. Beer Sheva for instance is 24 miles (40km) from the Gaza Strip. From the time the siren is sounded, Beer Sheva residents have 1 minute to find shelter. On the other hand, the city of Sderot, 1.2 miles (2 km) away from the Gaza boarder, has 15 seconds.

I suggest an extra reinforced table for extra inside protection against ceiling heavy debris
strambeer (author) in reply to aristide202May 16, 2012. 6:52 PM
No need, the ceiling the safe room is also reinforced.
aristide202 in reply to strambeerMay 17, 2012. 2:25 PM
I mean a reinforced dining table. If a few kilos rocket strikes your lemon trees it's a problem
but if strikes the roof of your home that could be the problem . Also if it does not blast down the ceiling it imagine for sure some concrete debris falling, I talked with people as my two parents involved in heavy bombings and air strikes and I realized that minor protections also can make some difference in some case. I looked at the map, it seems that closer the lighter rockets but much more you are targeted, is that how it goes?

I'm part Jewish (not bar mitzvah'd tho), but I still have to laugh at the fact that your one year old sleeps on a money pillow. No offense, just enjoying a joke.
aristide202 in reply to regener8May 16, 2012. 4:10 PM
what's the difference between a safe and a pillow? Ask a jew
dudeman7007 in reply to regener8Jul 26, 2011. 5:09 PM
you cant be part jewish.....
strambeer (author) in reply to regener8Jan 5, 2009. 5:56 AM
Thanks for the post. Actually the pillow is mine. You technically had a Bar Mitzvah when you turned 13. The ceremony has nothing to do with you being Jewish, its only only tradition. On your next vacation, you should come visit Israel. Its a beautiful country rich in history and culture. Good Luck

I'm American and I have to say that Israel is my favorite country. It even says (loosely translated) in my religion "He he curses Israel, himself shall be cursed" I'm not Jewish but I respect you guys for fighting hard for what you believe in and if I'm ever ordered to fire upon an Israeli in the Marine Corps I'd rather die.

This guy is just trying to give some advice on how to help keep your family members alive in a specific war zone and you jokers want to turn it into a political forum.

My 2cents....some people think that they are smarter than what they really are and that the majority of other people are stupider than them. Brainwashed people don't know that they are brainwashed. Stupid people are too stupid to know that they are stupid.

If you identify closely with any religion or political party, unless you're at the top, then the chances are that one or more of those 3 statements applies to you and you are just being used.

Wow. I thought this was a joke to. Here in America, you worry when the price of gas goes up 5 cents in a day. Its pretty surreal to come to the realization that, in some other parts of the world, people just like us regularly worry about terrorist's frag rockets raining down from the skies. Its also reminds me how great Instructables, and the internet as a whole is, that people in such different countries who worry about such different things come together with the common interest of sharing knowledge. Best of luck to you, whoever and wherever you are!

I'm an Israeli lving in the states. I'd like to say that I'm ashamed of what my country is doing. I hate saying it, but we lose the sympathy of the world when we kill women and children like terrorists do. At least they're fighting to get their land back. What's our excuse.? Instead of complaining about rockets.. lets call off the F16, give them their land back, and live in peace.
Anykey in reply to israel99Dec 16, 2010. 5:32 PM
thank for your words of peace my jewish brother :)

I want to ask the author a how to survive under the Israeli raid , it would be more useful than this because way more innocent palestinians have died under israelis' bombs than israelis under palestinian's rockets ...
haclil in reply to israel99Dec 16, 2010. 11:09 AM
Hi israel99,

Please don't build your self-estimation on what others think about your home country, even if they seem to represent a prevailing view.

Israel has already--and sadly--lost the world's sympathy due to massive campaigns of disinformation and "big lies". To wit, the Palestinians never had a king, a government or self-rule, never-ever! They lost their first chance in 1949 when offered an Arab state by the UN. No Arab or Arab entity ever accepted that state.

To be really fair, call the land that Israel and "the territories" sit on "disputed land". It's far too simplistic to say that Israel "stole" the Palestinian's land.

Lastly, terrorists kill women and children indiscriminately. Innocents are *the* target for terrorists, while for the Israeli army they are very regrettable collateral damage. This is a simple legal distinction similar to the question of intent used to distinguish murder from manslaughter.

Pretty easy to say when you are on someone else's land yourself.

sorry everyone but im really bored and ive really enjoyed this discussion but ive got an idea for an instructable (game) and all of you feel free to try it......give each other your addresses and get in your car with your family and a paintball gun and drive to each others homes and bombard the house full of paint and when the owner comes out bombard them too (pepper balls will be effective for this stage ) and lets see how this all plays out and how everybody resolves this .

A life remains a life wether you're from israel, plestine or outer space. All people are worth the same value. You could reformat your instructable to be less a propaganda similar, less racist commentable. Starting by annonimity, no need to mention your background, no need to include an identifiable person's photo (hammas soldiers). Checking your vocabulary, what's the definition of a terrorist? You say Hammas are terrorists, while they say you are. Both of you are humans, citizens of your own lands and both having the right to live. If we want to judge whomever, you're in a bad situation in regards to the number of victims and damage in both sides. A foreigner would say you're the agressor by such an analisys. Briefly, just re-edit your article ;-) Tschuss
afridave in reply to mindoverflowOct 14, 2010. 2:48 AM
and could you quantify that value? is a human life worth more than a snails life or a trees life?if so please explain why.
bodenham says: Jan 8, 2009. 8:15 AM
Someone once said something about "those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat. A great mistake was made following WWII. The Jewish people needed a place to go. The UN, not thinking too much in advance (no surprise there) decided to choose Palestine as a place that could be cut-up, and granted part of it, some of the most desirable areas to the Jews. By the way, they didn't ask the Palestinians ahead of time. What would the UK do if the UN came in, cut their country in half, and gave it to the Pakistanis? What would the US do if the UN came in and cut the country in half to provide a place for the Mexicans and Cubans, or even the Haitians? If you review your history you will find that this is exactly what was done to the Palestinians? Unfortunately, due to the large population of Jews in the US, the conscious of their political future side with Israel. If it were any other country, the US would probably be in there declaring a war for the poor oppressed people of Palestine.
goobyalus in reply to bodenhamJan 8, 2009. 4:29 PM
Just a few factual corrections: "The UN, not thinking too much in advance (no surprise there) decided to choose Palestine as a place that could be cut-up, and granted part of it, some of the most desirable areas to the Jews," "By the way, they didn't ask the Palestinians ahead of time." The land was first offered to the Jews in 1917, after WWI, before WWII, and before the UN existed (UN founded 1945 after WWII) by the Balfour Declaration of 1917, a piece of British foreign policy. The Faisal-Weizmann Agreement of 1919 (part of the 1919 Paris Peace Conference) was an agreement between Emir Faisal (Arab royalty) and Chaim Weizmann (president of the Zionist Organization) stating that there should be a Jewish state in Palestine according to the Balfour Declaration whose borders would be determined after the peace conference. Because this was part of the Paris Peace Conference, it was recognized by international law in 1919. The San Remo Conference of 1920, another piece of international law, stated that the borders of this future Jewish state would be within the land from the border of Jordan to the sea including Transjordan and Golan (but did not explicitly define political borders). The mandates of the San Remo Conference were ratified by both The League of Nations and a joint resolution of Congress in 1922. When the UN replaced The League of Nations in 1945, its Charter, in Article 80, adopted the policies of the League of Nations regarding pre-WWII territorial rights. "some of the most desirable areas" What is now Israeli land was nearly uninhabitable at the time Jewish settlement was encouraged, being desert and swamp land. I've reviewed my history, and found that this is not at all what was done to the Palestinians.
afridave in reply to goobyalusOct 14, 2010. 12:58 AM
Correct and something very similar occured in jugoslavia and we all know what happened there. All you people please read history, all this has happened before, none of these events are isolated ,none of them are really what the media and propaganda make you think they are.History may give you some ability to read between the lines.Check out what it was like to live in germany in early 1600 and the rise of bismarks modern german state and check out WW1 from a german perspective (do you see the link?) and paranoia nazi style mentality is not so hard to understand. So take all ethical, moral (subjective) things out of the picture and you at least have a hope of understanding it. Warfare is a normal, natural and ever present part of the human condition like childbirth, stds ,slavery and senility. There are no morals and ethics in war and anyone who thinks (or pretends to think) that one side is more or less morally correct than the other is living in a dream as are those who think we will ever live in a cloud cuckoo land world of love ,peace and happiness.

Wow, there is some delicious propaganda in here. It will keep me full for months. Lip smacking good. And the polarity of the issue... Perhaps both sides are wrong? The advice seems sound as for the not sploding thing though. If everybody chilled in home made bunkers all day then neither side would have time to hurl stuff at each other.

YIP EXCELLENT AND VERY INTERESTING READ IS THIS INSTRUCTIBLE
personally i think everyone should just stay at home an grow vegtables and play with there kids and dogs all day buy thats just not gonna happen.
strambeer (author) in reply to eagle_02Feb 4, 2009. 10:45 PM
Dear Eagle, Thank you for your post. If you read other messages, you will find that you are not the first to call my instructable propaganda. In fact, 3 weeks ago, this was reality for me and my family. I have said nothing against or derogatory about the citizens of Gaza. I only call people who blindly fire rockets at schools and hospitals with the objective of mass civilian casualties... terrorists. You may or may not agree with me. Thats your opinion and I respect that. These rockets cause sheer terror. I wish everyone would "chill out" like you said. The fact of the matter, Hamas or Fattah (sometimes both admit they have fired rockets) have never held true to any cease fire. I hope my experience and instructable helps you in the event (heaven forbid) that you are under rocket attack.
