1. The chances of going to any sporting good store or gun store and actually finding anything is slighlty above 0.001%.
2. Carrying a Desert Eagle or Magnum is probably the worst overall choice for a firearm in this situation. Have you considered the weight of carrying the amuniton here? These weapons have ammunition that isnt common compared to what you would find in the ensuing carnage of police cars, military vehicles etc where 9mm, .45 and .223/7.62 and 22 cal would be abundant - lighter and much easier to use. The weapons recoil alone would impede even the strongest person after so many rounds down range.
3. Trying to post up in a gas station is almost a 100% death sentence. Gas stations are meant to advertise what the goodies are they have inside and how do you tell? Big glass windows and doors. Zambies would be through that in a second. your food stores are atrocious and lighting them on fire with propane? at a gas station? hmm....Side note here. Lighting a zombie on fire is an awful idea. If they are coming towards you then they are more likely to catch your shelter on fire as well which will force you out only to become a zombie cheeburger.
4. The boat. I have often considered this scenario myself but here are your problems.
- you will never make it there with a semi truck - most roads if not all will be clogged with dead vehicles of all sorts. you would have more success on a quad - gator - dirt bike of some sort.
- Can you operate a 300-800ft vessel? I know i couldnt. The complexity is mind blowing. Just getting away from the dock would likely result in disaster.
- Going out to sea for the rest of your lives is really unrealistic. you would eventually run out of fuel, desalizination requires maintanence and you couldnt rely on your skills to handle complex weather.
What i think would be better with the boat idea is to take something smaller, say a 50-80 foot sailboat and limp your way to one of the smaller islands in hawaii that isnt as populated or not at all. If your on the east coast there are tons of little islands dotting up all around Florida. Simply investigate several until you find one that has the resources (water, game of some sort) before disembarking and living the zombie free live.
Good luck!
"I am Legend" for a movie refrenc you are stupid zombies don't hide out they wander around looking for prey so I am going on a limb and saying you think it is easy to suvive it's not.
His face was protected by a face shield, something you'd see surgeons using to avoid blood spatter. Nonetheless, a [german] gas mask is the way to go if you want full head protection, only downsides are: optical field of view is very ristricted, and hearing is impaired. Also, you have to yell for anyone else wearing a gasmask to even notice you are speaking. This can be overcome with two way communication radios with mic and speaker in you mask.

This is not my instructable but, seems like it would help. Also, I plan to head to Home Depot, the one near my house has is a fortress with steel roll-up doors and enough equipment to build anything you need plus a huge plant area with a like 15ft fence, potting soil and, seeds for the long term hold out. I could put expanded steal sheeting around the drivers compartment on the fork lift, and make forays out to pick up other supplies from the surrounding stores. As far as weapons, there will be plenty after the initial event from people who didn't fair as well.
EATEN ALIVE?!!!!!!!!
THE PLACES YOU JUST LISTED ARE THE ABSOLUTE LAST PLACES YOU SHOULD GO TO!!!!!!
not trying to be mean or anything, just they are REALLY BAD places to go to because they are first stops for zombies....
if we survive 2012
so I would suggest you want damage to zombies go shotgun.....
even the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) in the US are on board with this

But seriously do you know how many specifically coordinated nerve impulses it takes to just walk? I wouldn't be that worried.
A chainsaw is light?
No, a chainsaw isn't light. It's also noisy and fuel consuming. I'd go with a machete, sabre or a kukri. It's rather short but you can cut the zombie in half with it.
