To protect the data privacy and content integrity of a PDF file, people usually set passwords for a PDF file to make it secured. Then those people who don’t know the correct password won’t be able to open or make changes to the secured PDF file.

PDF User password and Owner password are two types of PDF passwords, which respectively protect a PDF file from opening and editing. If you don’t know (or remember) the passwords, you will be locked out of the secured PDF file and won’t be able to edit or even open it to read. In this situation, you will need to remove or recover the passwords to unlock the secured PDF file. Luckily, this won’t be a difficult task. Now this post will show you how to unlock a secured PDF file for reading and editing.

Part 1: How to unlock a secured PDF file for editing

When a PDF file is secured with an Owner password (mostly it is also called ''Change Permissions Password''), you need to use the password to make the secured PDF file unsecured before you can edit, copy and print the file. But if you don’t know (or remember) the PDF Owner password, you can remove the password through a web browser and then unlock the secured PDF file for editing. Steps are as follows.

Step 1: Open your browser, such as Google Chrome.

Step 2: Locate the secured PDF file you want to unlock, then drag and drop it into an existing/new tab in Chrome.

Step 3: Right click on the title bar of the PDF document, and then select Print from the context menu.

Step 4: After the ''Print'' panel opens, click the ''Change'' button in the ''Destination'' section and then select ''Save as PDF'' or ''Adobe PDF'' as the destination. Then click the ''Save'' or ''Print'' button.

Step 5: In the ''Save AS'' dialog, select one location such as Desktop to save the PDF file to be printed, type a file name, and then click the ''Save'' button. The Chrome browser will ignore the Owner password and save the secured PDF file without password.

Step 6: Open the PDF file and it is unsecured so that you can edit, print, and make changes to it. This way you successfully unlock the secured PDF file.

Part 2: How to unlock a secured PDF file for reading

When a PDF file is secured with a User password (mostly it is also called ‘Document Open Password’), but you don’t know or remember the password, you can find the password using a ''PDF Password Refixer'' tool and then unlock the secured PDF file for reading. Steps are as follows.

Step 1: Install and Run PDF Password Refixer

Install the PDF Password Refixer software on your computer, and then launch it.

Step 2: Import PDF File Path

Navigate to the secured PDF file and add its file path to the software by clicking the ''Open'' button on the tool bar.

Step 3: Select Password Attack Type

Select one attack type from the drop-down button, and choose password properties, such as character ranges, password length, etc.

Step 4: Start PDF Password Recovery

Click ''Start'' to start discovering PDF password.

Step 5: Unlock Secured PDF File

After PDF User password is recovered and displayed on the screen, use the password to open the secured PDF file for reading. So you successfully unlock the secured PDF file.

By the way, when the PDF file is secured with only a PDF owner password, you also can use the ''PDF Password Refixer'' tool to recover the Owner password and unlock the secured PDF file.
