This is a quick overview of how to use a Park chain tool to break apart and rejoin a bicycle chain.  This is part of a larger bike rebuild I have been doing a TechShop San Francisco, turning an older beater 10 speed into a teal, single speed machine.  You can see a previous Instructable at: http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-use-a-crank-puller/?ALLSTEPS

Step 1: Set your chain into the chain tool

First, fit the chain into the lower of the two possible positions on your chain tool.  The two forks on either side of the chain tool should hold the rotating portion of the chain in place.  Then, screw down the pin on your chain tool until it presses against the central pin which holds the two links of chain together.

My tool must be rusty. I tried it, but couldn't make it budge. Used a hammer and aul instead. Not good if you're going to reuse on a bike, but great for jewelry, etc.
I should just go out and buy a new tool.

Is you pin still intact? If not, go to your local bike shop and see if they have extra pins. You may need to buy a whole new one

The pin is still good for my purposes, but if I were using the chain on a bike again, I'd buy a new one, yes. Thanks!
