Introduction: How to Basket Weave Hair

Picture of How to Basket Weave Hair

This basket weave design uses four or more strands of hair "woven together in a checkered pattern to resemble a woven basket" (Basket Weave, 2015). This hairstyle is then combined with a braided headband for a unique twist. Basket weave hair can be used with the hair parted down the middle or on a side part with a straight line or zig-zag. No parting necessary. The braided headband can be changed to accommodate the many different braids imaginable.

Step 2: Get Hair Ready

Brush and apply Bio-Silk. Then, section off the hair into 3 different parts.

Step 3: Left Side

Picture of Left Side

Section off a 1-inch piece along the forehead.

Wet hair and apply gel.

Pull the rest of the left-side sectioned hair into a pony tail.

Flatten the hair section along the forehead.

Using the plastic needle, pull a 1/2 inch piece to be pulled through the left-side hair giving the illusion of weaving in and out.

Continue until you reach the bottom of the left side.

Step 4: Right Side

Picture of Right Side

Repeat the same steps as described on the left side to the right side of the hair.

Section off a 1-inch piece along the forehead.

Wet hair and apply gel.

Pull the rest of the right-side sectioned hair into a pony tail.

Flatten the hair section along the forehead.

Using the plastic needle, pull a 1/2 inch piece to be pulled through the right-side hair giving the illusion of weaving in and out.

Continue until you reach the bottom of the right side.

Step 5: Time to Braid!

Picture of Time to Braid!

The strands that come out of the weave will be braided to become the headband.

Grab 2 strands of hair coming from the right-side pony tail and begin to braid up to the crown.

Make sure you leave enough hair from that pony tail to make its own braid later.

As you go along, add a strand of weave to the mix (one-by-one) as you get to each weave strand.

Continue until you get to the left side of the head leading towards the ear.

As you approach the left-side pony tail, make sure to leave the elastic band in place and continue to braid the pony tail.

Secure with an elastic band and leave alone for now.

Braid the other pony tail, secure, and leave it alone too.

Step 6: All Done

Picture of All Done

Take the big pony tail out and comb it.

Since my daughter's hair is so long, I decided to wrap her 2 braids under her head.

Wrap the braids up towards the top-center (crown) and secure with bobby pins.

Add curls or flat-iron the loose hair to finish the look.

Use hairspray to keep in place.
