Mount two copper pipes on the dowels. Make the fit snug by putting the wire between the dowel and the pipe.

Connect the transformer output to the stiff wire.

do not energize the transformer as shown in the above picture, or there will be a high-resistance fault to the transformer case (most have the neutral, or center-tap of the secondary winding grounded to the case itself). This will at least further reduce effectiveness, and at worst, cuase a fire and destroy the transformer, depending on relative humidity...Another reason not to use wood.
