Step 1: What you need to build your box

Picture of What you need to build your box
To build your collection box you need scissors, cellotape, 2 rulers, wrapping paper, our collection box labels, a piece of cardboard and the cardboard box of your choice.

Step 2:

Picture of
To get started you need to transform your evryday cardboard box into a life-saving money collecting box. You can do this by cutting a money-sized hole into the top of it.

Step 3:

Picture of
Now you need to cello tape the box shut, to keep the money from escaping.

Step 4:

Picture of
We then wrapped our box, you don't need to do this, but if you do you'll end up with a much prettier collection box!

Step 5:

Picture of
Now for the display panel. You need to cellotape a ruler to either side of your box. We fixed the ruler on at 11cm; enough space to stick the panel on and to keep everything fixed to the collection box.

Step 6:

Picture of
Once the rulers are stuck to both sides, stick you cardboard to the rulers.

Step 7:

Picture of
Now stick collection box posters to your display panel and the front of the box. Make sure you have the arrows in the right direction. (Unlike us!)

Step 8:

You should find that people around you are compelled to give you their change, even before your fundraiser starts.

Its a little late in the thread but did it ever occur to the people that say we will adapt to global warming. That are brains are our biggest evolutionary trait and we should use that to try and solve the problem. In stead of waiting for this new magical transformation that will be more effective than our intellects.
well you see. there is more evidence proving climate"change" than there is evidence that humans actually exist. the problem is we really haven't been keeping records long enough to actually have figured out what is "normal". It is quite easy to say that if sea levels went up 30 feet a lot of the humans would be screwed. The problem with that is it is very easy to find pictures of ancient fossilized coral reefs(which only really grow UNDER water you know) an astounding 30 meters ABOVE sea level. that's right old coral reefs basically 120 feet above your head.SOOOOOO if the ice caps melt enough to raise the water level by 120 feet is that a sign of a "true" catastrophe or just a sign that the earth is going back to what is "normal"

In a few thousand years we "might" have enough data to make a 5th grade educated guess.
This is a cool idea, but I think the money from the box should be donated to fight something such as cancer or AIDS or homelessness, not something imaginary, such as "climate change".
Dude.

That's one debate you don't want to start.

Not on instructables.

:D
I agree with him though. i suppose if i saw some actual evidence of climate change i might potentially change my mind though...
Denial of climate change is as well-based as the denial of evolution or the belief in geocentricity.

Unfortunately, whilst the other two mainly make you look foolish, denial of climate change is actually dangerous to humanity.

As well as observed rises in sea level, and observed increases in the rate of ice-cap melting and the observed reduction in glaciers globally and the observed increases in droughts, storms, tornadoes, floods etc, there is the looming spectre of global famines and shortages of drinkable water.

Sound like scaremongering? Read these articles and tell me GW isn't happening, then read this (and the linked articles) and tell me not to be worried.
are you a phd graduate student Dr. Kiteman? lolers
I'm a science teacher.
doesnt matter your a frekin genious
Er, thank you?
Read and DO NOT BE WORRIED!  If there is global warming then there is nothing reasonable man can do about it.  Rate of ice cap melting?  Not at both poles!  Sorry but there has been a decrease in droughts, storms, tornadoes, hurricanes and floods for the last two years.  Rise in sea level or drop in land level from plate techtonics?  There has been NO change in climate tempatures for the past 11 years -- a fact.  Glacier melt is probably due to a solar cycle - not global warming caused by man.  The lack of drinkable water is not due to climate change but to increases in populations and usage of water.  Not to worry though, nature will eventually take care of that problem through starvation, dying of thirst, disease and warfare.  Reality is a bummer.  Trouble is too many people have been watching science fiction movies and actually think we can tame nature and solve the problems of the world in about 2 hours.  Those articles you mentioned are basically scare mongering.  Either humanity adapts to the environment or will join the extinct species of the world, which they will eventually do anyway.  Why live in fear, get on with your lives and enjoy them as much as possible.  We can not afford the so called "solutions" proposed by politicians and which scientists say will result in less than a .1% change in global temperature if all nations of the planet adhered to the proposals -- which they will not.  I for one will fight those that propose that I go back to living in a cave or tepee because some ignorant politician thinks I should.  I will continue to be well fed, clothed, warm, dry and amused by my television, radio, computer and other modern conveniences.  For those unfortunates who are living where islands are sinking beneath the waves, take personal responsibility for yourself and move.  Other illegal aliens are sneaking into Europe, United States and Canada, so why don't you?  People like Kiteman will gladly give up their home, income, health care and jobs to you.  Of course, I will not.
Actually, climate change is a natural cycle of the planet and largely based on the cycles of the sun. If you take the time to check your facts you will find the sun has been expanding and that the climate of the other planets are warming. Also a fact, if everyone on the planet followed all the recommendations there would be a net effect of less than 0.01 degrees in the next 10 years. The claim that humanity is the major cause of global warming is specious. This is a political not scientific argument. Even the scientists of the world cannot agree about global warming. The results of the meeting of scientists was written before the scientists even submitted their findings and not signed by those scientists. Most of the scientists are not specialists in the field and their views are no more of an authority on global warming than some brain dead druggie actor or rock and roll singer. You want to waste your time trying to fight nature, go ahead. I for one will look for ways to adapt to any coming change just like my ancestors did. The survival of the fittest will win in the end. The emperor has no clothes!
...if you check your facts...

"So for the period for which we have direct, reliable records, the Earth has warmed dramatically even though there has been no corresponding rise in any kind of solar activity."

Sarge I do not believe you have read the articles I linked to above. Please do so. Fox News is a remarkably unreliable source of scientific facts.
Actually, I have read those articles and others that contradict the alleged facts you referenced. By solar activity, do you mean sun spots? Hate to burst your bubble but the sun has been expanding. In other words the surface of the sun has gotten closer to our planet. If you do not think that makes a difference then why is Mercury and Venus hotter than our planet and Mars is colder. One volcanic eruption puts more green houses gases into the atmosphere than humanity does in 10 years. Bottom line is this. Humanity is not going to change their ways no matter what you and a thousand others say. China and third world developing countries are going to increase their use of fossil fuels and I am not willing to go to start living in a cave. If humanity is doomed, I am going to enjoy my life in the meantime. However, I do not believe all the so called experts and seriously doubt the doom sayers. You want to give up modern technology knock yourself out. I will not.
"Solar activity" (if you read the links) includes sunspots, output and size.

As for the other planets, try checking their relative distances, compared to the fluctuating diameter of the Sun.

And Venus... global warming's ultimate potential end.

As for the rest of your post; pure selfishness.
Well, unfortunately those articles I have read do not agree with yours. Also you will note that the last hurricane season was mild compared to previous and at the rate this season (which is almost over) is going to be milder than the previous. Your argument that weather is getting more severe belies the facts and data. Pure selfishness? Maybe, but at least I admit to it and do not champion the attempt by you and your kind to tell the rest of the world what to think, eat, say, and otherwise control others for your own egotistical reasons. You have become boring. I will no longer answer to your rubbish.
Since you refuse to be swayed by the facts as presented by the scientific establishment, I suggest you try joining this forum.

You may find this section most relevant.

It's free, friendly to new members, and all the admins are "proper" (i.e. published) scientists.

You can tell them I sent you if you want, or you can approach them cold, it's up to you.
If any of you have actually taken the time to look at the facts from both sides you will see that climate change is real, but has been going on since the earth first formed. What we do may have an effect, but there isn't anywhere enough data to know for sure either way.

And a side comment, recycling anything other than metal creates more pollution than making new items. Please don't recycle plastic, just stop buying it in the first place. The three R's are REDUCE, REUSE and then if that doesn't get it all Recycle what you can of the rest, not Recycle, Recycle and recycle some more.

Have a good day all.
Nobody has denied past variations have occurred, or that some periods of the Earth's history were much warmer than today.  Some were much colder (google for snowball Earth).
"What we do may have an effect, but there isn't anywhere enough data to know for sure either way."
Apart from those who simply deny the data, the whole scientific community now realises that the current period of warming is not simply coincidental with humans being on the planet, but that the warming is almost entirely anthropomorphic - the correlation between human activity, atmospheric gases and temperature is amazingly close.

i think this song best sums up what i think

It remains to be seen whether humanity has had a significant impact on those observed changes though. I don't think anyone is arguing that there is a climate change going on. The point I think people are making above is whether that this change was influenced by humanity or simply part of Earth's cycle.
Kiteman bFusion5 years ago
Read the links I posted. The consensus is that GW is driven by human activity.
bFusion Kiteman5 years ago
The point people above were trying to make (I'm wording it this way because I'm fairly ambivalent to both sides of the argument) was that the research of our impact hasn't gone on long enough to prove conclusively that it's human generated. Again, I'm not arguing that we don't have a hand in this, obviously we are contributing to the problem, but the scope in which we are contributing is what should be up for debate. Not whether climate change is happening, because that part is obvious.
Kiteman bFusion5 years ago
We have around 100,000 years of direct atmospheric samples, showing both temperature and CO2 levels.

The temperature rises match our CO2 and other greenhouse gas outputs.

There is no other pattern-match.

Have you heard of Occam's Razor?
In geological time, 100,000 years is no basis in fact concerning earth warming and cooling cycles. The planet has had cycles where there were no ice caps and the arctic regions were almost tropical in nature. Who say this would be bad. The end results could be turning the worlds deserts into gardens of eden. To some people any change is bad, to others it is an opportunity to be embraced. You want to see the truth, check out the Nobel prize winner Gore and his life style versus the supposedly anti-green former President Bush and his life style (their homes) and tell me who the real environmentalist is.
Gore may have a Nobel prize, but doesn't deserve it. He jumped in front of a global opinion trend and made a flashy, one sided, presentation.
Oh, the Earth will continue merrily on its way, but the problem is - will it have humans on it? Rising sea levels have already displaced huge numbers in coastal populations. Several islands have become uninhabitable. Arable land is under imminent risk - a large part of the UK's arable land is already at or below sea level, and the draining of wetlands is actually lowering the land's surface at the same time. Changing weather patterns are increasing the number, severity and length of droughts. The amount of fresh water available is shrinking all the time. GW has been referred to as the single greatest threat to humanity. Even if the scientists are all wrong, and the temperature rise is natural, how sensible is it to sit back and do nothing? Would you sit and relax in the foothills of an erupting volcano, simply because "it is natural"? As for Gore vs Bush - that is two politicians versus six and a half billion humans. To say that we should do nothing about our own impact simply because a politician happens to have an older house than another politician is a feeble argument in the extreme.
Hopefully, those easily fooled and listen to chicken little will evolve in the meantime. Especially when this hogwash is long gone. But I have my doubts. There is no having a logical discussion on this subject. It has just become an emotional conflict amongst political parties. Those who want to believe in dooms day will believe one way and those who do not will continue to believe the other way. Each side can come up with their so called "facts." There is no way I will convince you to the contrary and there is not way you will convince me.
Hopefully, those easily fooled and listen to chicken little will evolve in the meantime.

Ah-ha, there we see the peeping demon. The groups that tend to pretend GW is neither real nor anthropomorphic are also those groups who have difficulty admitting the facts of evolution.

This discussion was dead before you started it, sarge. Unless you'd like to ask your pastor to join in?
My use of the word "evolve" would to me indicate that I do believe in evolution. I also do not see how religion and evolution cannot coexist. Just because you are a follower of the anti-Christ makes no difference to me. Nothing like a petty elitist trying to out vocabulary the opposition. You are the one who has finally shown your bias and your arguments are dead in the water. CYA! :D
Read my forum entry. LOL, older house. GW has been referred to as the single greatesy threat to humanity. Yeah and nuclear weapons have been referred to as the single greatest threat to humanity. Your same experts were predicting another ice age not that long ago. Your reference to weather patterns and extremes have been debunked already. According to the latest date there seems to be a cooling trend. If you live in England perhaps you should move now while you can. I am willing to sit back and do nothing until someone with a do able and reasonable plan is proposed. The proposed methods of sequestering carbon are absurd and too expense to even try. I would not sit in the foothills of a volcano about to erupt and I would not live in coastal communities about to be flooded. My point exactly, adapt if that includes moving. Take it from New Orleans, they told them to move out because of Katrina and didn't. They became gator food -- survival of the fittest. I am willing to fight by force of arms if necessary to preserve my way of life. So if you want to force me to change then bring it on. There are too many people on the planet and those places most over crowded are not willing to practice birth control. I for one do not think sending them water and food so they can reproduce and compound the problem is a solution. Better that 10,000 die today then 100,000 in another ten years. A difference of +1.99 versus +2 degrees in 10 years is not enough for me to buy into the solutions proposed to date.
I am willing to fight by force of arms if necessary to preserve my way of life.

Haha, is your real name Cnut?

Let me know when your pastor has given you links to the "facts" you refer to.

Until then, I apologise to ricklay for attracting sarge89or and the other deniers of reality to these comments.
bFusion Kiteman5 years ago
I'm obviously not cogent enough to properly prove my point, sorry for wasting your time.
Kiteman bFusion5 years ago
Not a problem - I'm happy to discuss it, but please, read the links I gave.
vestie Kiteman5 years ago
Sorry, At the moment I don't have time to read them but have bookmarked them. Yes, Climate change is a cycle and has been shown to occur when greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere. But there is no effective way of capturing GG(greenhouse gases) other than increasing the size of earths booms. This is what produced our fossil fuel and its what we need to do to stop it. Basically the only solution to climate change is to get rid of animals (humans and others) and /or increase the amount of living plants that can store the CO2 for us. By burning fossil fuels we are accelerating the problem but it brings to rise another big issue, What is the carrying capacity of the earth in terms of humans? Thats another discussion. When CO2 rises it melts ice caps when ice caps melt it increases the water level. And eventually it gets hot enough to increase the land that has more tropic conditions. This should cause an explosion in plant life resulting in a mass quantities of CO2 to be stored in biomass. Where conditions are right swamps will form storing the carbon in the swamp rather than biomass. <<< That's the important part, swamps and similar ecosystems are neccicary to stem the tide of GW or CC. Then the earth will cool (maybe an ice-age) and the earth will return to it's current state. This has happened before when the continents divided and the seismic turmoil cuased volcano's and vents to release GG's. Long story short, it's not our fault entierly (it's how the system self regulates) but it is not something to scoff at.

opinions aside, I thought it was common courtesey to keep these kind of discussions in an area like the forums... where as this area should be kept for discussion of the instructible itself.... the box in this case. And if someone is looking for an 'ible to make a very nice and very effective donations box for whatever, then yes, this is a great ible.
I guess this shouldn't be an instructable and just a forum entry? You can't have it both ways. Perhaps if the submission did not include reference to global warming? Make it political and this is the result.
"He mentioned global warming so we have to argue about it"
Yeah, we do. Political propaganda needs to be faced and pointed out. To let it slide just lets it propagate and get more insidious. Those who started this also propagate myths like the West Nile Virus, H1N1, Bird Flu and other things are going to kill half of humanity and try to scare everyone into buying into their political agenda which is nothing more than the communism that failed in the USSR, Cuba, and is failing now in China and other countries. Those who continue to buy into these myths need to be challenged for the survival of western cultures and the preservation of our freedom. If you want to lose your most basic freedoms, keep ignoring them and think you have nothing to lose.
