Introduction: How to Crochet a Basket With T-shirt Yarn

About: I'm a crafting mommy of nine. I play video games, I love to crochet, sew, paint, bead, cook, write, watch movies and have fun:) I will try almost anything at least once. I blog about everything, gardening, cook…

Ok so you know how to make yarn out of an old -shirt.https://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-turn-an-old-t-shirt-into-yarn/

Now what are you going to make? How about a basket to put your yarn in?

Step 1: Materials

You will need your ball of  yarn I used two different colors the amount will vary depending on the size of the t-shirts you used.

size N or 10.00mm crochet hook

Step 2: Let's Get Started

If you know how to crochet that's great! For those of you who don't I will show you some basic stitches. First you will need to chain on three stitches. It doesn't matter if you are left or right handed either. Hold the needle however it feels comfortable to you.

Ok so now you want to make the first stitch. This will be your knot. Leaving a long thread (about 6 inches) wrap then twist the yarn around the needle. image2

The put the yarn over the needle and pull through. image 3,4 and 5

Pull the knot to secure it. Just not too tight you can't move your needle. image 6

Step 3: Chain 3

Now you are going to chain three. To do this bring the yarn over the needle and through the loop do this three times.

Step 4: Basket Base

Now you want to make 8 half double crochet into the third chain from the hook.

Yarn over the needle.image 1

Put needle through the first chain you made. image 2

Yarn over again and then pull through one loop. You should have three loops on your hook. image3

Yarn over again and pull through all three needles on hook . image 4

Now do these steps until you have eight of them in that same spot. You have your first round made yey.

Step 5: Second Round

Now you need to join that last stitch to the first one. Put the needle through the first half double crochet, yarn over and pull through. This is called a slip stitch, or joining chain. image 1 and 2

Chain 2 image 3

Make one half double crochet in the same spot as your slip stitch.

Make two half double crochet in each remaining chain.

You should have 16 half double crochet at the end of this round. image 4

Join at the end of this round.

Step 6: Third Round

Chain 2

This time make two half double crochet in the next stitch.

Then one half double crochet in the next stitch.

Do this all the way around.

You should have 24 half double crochet at the end of the round.

Join the same as the last round.

Step 7: Fourth Round

Chain 2

For this round make one half double crochet in the next two stitches.

Then two half double crochet in the next stitch.

Do this all the way around.

You should have 32 half double crochet at the end of the round.

Join the same as before.

Step 8: Fifth Round

Chain 2

One half double crochet in the next three stitches.

Two half double crochet in the next stitch.

Do this all the way around. You should have 40 Half double crochet at the end of the round.

Join the same as before.

Step 9: Sixth Round

Chain 2

One half double crochet in the next four stitches.

Two half double crochet in the next stitch.

Do this all the way around. You should have 48 half double crochet at the end of the round.

Join the same as before.

Chain 2

One half double crochet in the next five stitches.

Two half double crochet in the next stitch.

Do this all the way around. You should have 56 half double crochet at the end of this round.

Join the same as before.

Step 11: Fasten Off

Now cut the yarn leaving a tail long enough to thread through later.  Yarn over and pull through the loop and pull the yarn tight.

Step 12: Basket Sides

Grab your other yarn.

In the last stitch of row seven attach the yarn with a slip stitch. image 1

chain 2 image 2

Next part is a little confusing for some. Working in the back loops of the next stitch, image 3, and in each stitch around work one single crochet (put yarn into the desired stitch, image 4, yarn over and pull through one loop, image 5,  yarn over and pull through two remaining loops, image 6, single crochet made, image 7)

End of first round of basket side. Join with a slip stitch the same as before.

Step 13: 2nd Round

Chain 2

Work one half double crochet in each stitch around. Keep doing this until you have reached the desired height. I worked  four rounds.

Join at the end of each round and chain two at the beginning.

Step 14: Decrease Round

For this round you are going to decrease.

Half double crochet in the first five stitches.

Decrease half double crochet in the next stitch.(put needle into the next stitch, image 1, yarn over and bring up a loop, two loops on hook, image 2, put needle into the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, three loops on hook image 3, yarn over and pull through all three loops on hook. Decrease made)

Follow this pattern all the way around. Eight decreases made. Join the same as before.

Step 15: Almost Done:)

Chain 2

One half double crochet in each stitch around.

Join the same as before.

Step 16: Handles

Now for the handles if you want them. If not just half double crochet all the way around.

If you do half double crochet over the next 12 stitches.

Chain 5

Skip next five stitches. Half double crochet in next stitch and in the next 24 stitches.

Chain 5

Skip next five stitches. Half double crochet in the remaining 9 stitches.

Join the same as before.

Step 17: Last Round

Chain 1

Single crochet in each stitch and in each chain around.

Join the same as before.

Fasten off and weave in tail.

You are all done.
