You can also do it with a needle and a piece of thread. Though I'm not entirely sure how. I had to perform this trick in kindergarden a couple of times but my mom used to prepare the banana for me. I never really knew how I did it, but the audience was always really amazed.

I've done this with an opened-out paper clip, and cut the banana into1/2 inch slices. The hole made my the wire is less obvious, and gives a cleaner cut.
