Well, I'm no Julian Beever.

This is what I came up with..
The chalk drawing actual size is about 3 feet by 21 feet long.

I spent about 6 hours on it today..

I only used the Thick Chalk you get at Walmart.
So, my palette was limited.

Enjoy...

Update:
Just finished another chalk drawing today. 5-28-2009.
Hope you like it.
I think it turned out rather well!

I did use my grid method to draw the gumball machine.
Also, had better chalks this time.
Enjoy!
I hope you enjoyed my instructable!

Hi, great tutorial, I'm gonna try it. I have used a great graphic tool for a long time called Gimp. It's free and it has a "perspective" tool that will allow you to do this if anyone is looking for a free tool.

Cool instructable. I might do something like this, on a smaller scale, with some of my middle school art classes.

Did you use a carpenter's chalk line to do the grid on the sidewalk? I would think that would be the fastest way to create the grid, if you're going to use chalk to do it. Maybe fill it with a lighter color of chalk, I wouldn't use the colors that are made for carpentry to do the grid.

Sweet. Is it cheating to use a projector on the sidewalk at night?

This is EXACTLY what i was thinking the moment i say the title... "I should get a projector... it would be much easier..." It would also be very good for creating things like this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMGek2Labm4 (not mine)

it's not cheating, it's innovation.

Nicely done! I decorate a square every year at Chalk It UP! and have wanted to do this, but didn't know how...until now.
