I have been using a Puppy Linux 4.3.1 Live disc to boot a laptop for Internet surfing.  It comes with a great little program for downloading YouTube videos and saving them in several different formats, including MP4.  Click on the Menu button (lower left of scree).  Move the cursor to Internet.  A sub-menu appears in a box.  Click once on You2Pup.  The rest is very intuitive.

Some familiarity with the Puppy file system hierarchy is good to have so you can save the file someplace and find it later when running the laptop under Windows XP.

Puppy Linux is a free download you can find easily with a search.
