How to lose weight!

Step 5First Real Steps! Exercise!

You need an hour and a half, every day of quality exercise to loose weight. This is not easy. You will need to work up to this as a goal.
Start with 10 minutes of exercise at first, where your heart rate is elevated to 80% of it's maximum. Break it up into 5 minutes in the morning, and 5 minutes in the evening if you wish. You can run in place, jog, walk, bike, hike, swim, whatever you want, but make sure that you reach that 10 minutes a day for that first day. Every day add one more minute to the routine. Do different exercises every day if you like, but get it done. NO EXCUSES! Motivate yourself by imagining that you are running over that fat, sweeping out your arteries, punching back death, what ever works for you!
Avoid the "Gym Sucker Punch". Gyms offer memberships for YEARS and they break it down into days. Here is what happens:
When you enter a gym and ask about a membership, it's like buying a used car. First they tell you what "features" the gym has. They always use words like "motivate" and "professional" as well as drop the names of famous people. They also talk about "personalized exercise plans" and many other industry marketing terms. Then they hit you with a "low monthly introductory fee" for an astoundingly short amount of months (as little as 1 as much as 3. Then they get personal and say that they will wave some fee, or discount something if you sign with them right then. There are always discounts for long range contracts. The usual contract is for 36 months. That's 3 whole years! Longer then most cell phone contracts! 36 is just a big number intended to trick you into thinking you are getting allot for your money. If you read the fine print, once you sign, that is it. You MUST continue to pay until the contract expires. Some gyms have auto renewal clauses enabling them to keep billing you long after the 3 years are up.
Most people go to the gym for the first 3 to 5 months of an exercise program. They do not alter their diet and expect results. When the results are not as fast, or as easy as they expect, they quit the gym. This means that 31 to 33 months (more then two and a half years) they MUST continue to pay. Gyms know this. That's how you get suckered.
Gym equipment is expensive to buy. It takes room to store, and if it is used infrequently, it is wasted.
Doctors say that the best exercise for loosing weighty is running, jogging, walking, and swimming. If you have joint problems, or serious weight issues, swimming is best. Most people have a bathing suit, and shoes.

Kind of a post that's been here for a while, but a good idea for weights at home hit me the other day. Everyone has a backpack... and everyone has books. Add the two together and you have a free (well... granted you have both), adjustable weight.

Actually what's recommended for daily exercise is 30 minutes of moderate activity. But this is also assuming that you walk 10,000 steps a day.

I do agree that exercise is very important to weight loss, but I think 90 minutes a day is quite unreasonable. Who has this much time? Weight loss can be achieved with not so much exercise, without needing such a gradual build up of exercise. Other than that it's quite a good guide. I guess the only thing I'd add for people is to make it fun. And like you say, it doesn't have to be at a gym. Bringing it home makes it more likely to be done and for you to have no excuses. In fact, even having little weights at work, or if you have you're own office with enough space, your own equipment, will give you opportunities to work out during the day when usually people are sedentary, which might make even the 90 mins a day goal more realistic.
