Step 3Preperation step 2 - 3
Setting up the Reaction Chamber (filling the bottle)
1. Get yourself to a well ventilated area.
2. Get a bucket of water and grab some safety glasses if you wish.
3. Pour about two tablespoons of the Drain cleaner into the bottle depending
on the size of the bottle and strength of drain cleaner.
4.Get a reasonable length aluminum foil
5. Fold this foil into a long bar and force into bottle (don't worry if most of the foil is not touching the NaOH as it will eventually fall in. And If all the foil was at the bottom the reaction would be too vigorous )

cutting the Al foil into small bits increases the reaction able surface area, folding it up causes the Al in the folds not to react, wasting part of the reagent in this reaction. Making the pieces smaller increase the reaction material, and you'll have to use less foil in the end.

Yes a higher active surface area will increase the rate of reaction. However this situation is not preferable for the production of hydrogen as instead of a regular controlled reaction you will have an almost instantaneous reaction which will create too much steam and heat. if too much heat is produced too fast the bottle will shatter. and thats why i think the foil should be folded.
