Introduction: How to Make a Batman's "Mr. Freeze" Costume

About: I'm a kid in a candy store when it comes to creating things. I love learning different versions of art, whatever medium it may be. Feel free to like the official site on Facebook to keep up with past, presen…

Forecast for today.. a COOOOOOLD FREEZE!.. Mr. Freeze that is.

Materials: i got many of these things at thrift stores, garage sales, discount stores, etc.

-baseball shin guards (thrift store $4)

-black leggings

-black longsleeve tshirt

-blue shorts (found women’s bathing suit shorts)

-batman belt

-street hockey chest pad

-soccer shin guards

-red glasses

-white face paint

-blue duct tape

-blue paint

-silver paint

-gloves

-cardboard

-styrofoam

-touch light

-aquarium tubes

-large clear wine bucket

-toy gun

-large container (Thrift store, to be used as backpack)

-miscellaneous details such as bottle caps, computer parts, lights, buttons, wires, odd contraptions. Basically anything to look like a futuristic machine

Step 1: CLOTHES + SHINS + BELT

CLOTHES

Put on your shoes, tights, shorts over tights, black shirt. *on the shoes, we put some blue tape on the shoes to make them more “freeze”-like.

SHINS (image 1)

We used baseball shin guards and painted them silver and blue for contrast to the black leggings. I just use the natural shapes and details of the guards to determine what to paint.

BELT (image 2)

took the Batman belt and spray painted it silver. it was too short for my friend to wear so i added a belt to extend it’s length.

Step 2:

Chest Pads

I took the chest pads and colored them black, silver, and blue. I didn’t want to permanently alter the pads, so i covered some parts in colored duct tape.

Chest Light

I also added a touch light (painted blue) to the center. I drilled tubes into the light that i just tucked into the collar of the neck pads.

Step 3: Forearms + Hands

FOREARMS

I painted the soccer shin guards silver and blue along its original details.

HANDS

For the hands, i just took some cardboard, painted them blue, and then glued them onto the glove tops.

Step 4: DOME HARNESS: Part 1 (Structure)

The helmet is the wine bucket. However, it would not sit squarely against the shoulder pads, so i had to make a type of harness.
  1. I used styrofoam to create something that would stick into the pads, and that would hold the bucket in place.
  2. i sawed the styrofoam so that it rested comfortably on the shoulders.
  3. I then made an attachment to the back which could be pushed into a back section of the pads.

Step 5: Dome Harness: Part 2 (Groove)

i cut a groove on the top of the harness so that the bucket would not slide around when placed on.

Step 6: Dome Harness: Part 3 ( Breathing) + Face

my friend was having an issue with breathing, so i cut out a section of the harness and replaced it with a plastic grate (orange or onion bags).

Once everything worked, i “skinned” the whole harness in poster board to give it a cleaner look. I added some little decorations  (bottle caps) to the front and painted them red.

FACE

Since Mr. Freeze is about being cold and icy, my friend had some white face paint to make him look pale. i found some red sunglasses from a costume store. you could substitute them with red goggles.. but they should be red for sure.

Step 7: Backpack + Gun

Backpack (Image 1)
For the backpack, use your imagination. You can add anything you want to it that looks mechanical, computer-like, electronic, etc. I broke a rice cooker and tore out some wires and random weird looking parts.

I took a large bottle and attached it to the bottom. put some tubes inside and in random places. and also added some painted bottle caps to make them look like dials.

* I just made some blue straps out of duct tape and put some velcro at the ends to secure it together.

Gun (Image 2 +3)

For the gun, i found a old Star Wars gun at a thrift store. i painted the whole thing blue and silver.  lastly, i attached the gun to the backpack with a hose.

Step 8: FINISHED

*As a way to feminize the costume, my friend wore ice earrings, did her make up, painted her nails, wore cut off gloves, wore heels, put some blue in her hair, and rocked some blue lipstick.

Take some “cool” pics and have an “ice” day
