I'm not sure if this is an authentic Derby day substitute for a Mint Julep but it's a sure tasty drink none the less. There are a lot of cocktails called Derby. One of the most common is just gin and peach bitters. This variation is a pretty classic sour with sweet vermouth providing an interesting contrast.

Ready to make a Derby Cocktail?

Step 1: Cocktail Ingredients for a Derby Cocktail

Let's make sure you've got all the ingredients you need.

1.5 oz Johnny Drum bourbon
1/2 oz fresh lime juice
3/4 oz Cointreau
3/4 oz Carpano Antica vermouth
Garnish with a sprig of mint.

Step 2: Preparation

Combine all ingredients except the mint into a shaker. Add ice and shake vigorously. Pour into a rocks glass over ice (one large preferably). Garnish with mint.

Enjoy!

The sweet Vermouth does add a fascinating contrast! I used Jack Daniels as that's what I had handy (I know, it's not technically bourbon, but it worked well!)
