Introduction: How to Make a Jewellery Roll

How to make a quick and simple Jewellery Roll with two zipped pockets, large pocket and ring holder.

You will need - outer and lining fabric (I used velvet and satin for my jewellery roll), iron-on interfacing, two co-ordinating zips, co-ordinating thread, a small piece of velcro or a metal snap.

Step 1: Cut Out Fabrics and Interfacing

From outer fabric: 20x30cm for the exterior, 8x15cm for ring roll

Lining fabric: 20x30cm for lining, 20x40cm for pocket panel, 2 pieces 20x20cm for upper zipped pocket, 2 pieces 20x10cm for lower zipped pocket, 2 pieces 6x30cm for ties

Iron on interfacing: 20x30cm for lining, 20x40cm for pocket panel

I only used interfacing for the pocket panel and the lining as they were the bits I felt needed a bit of reinforcement but you can reinforce as much as you want.

Press flat the lining and outer fabrics, and iron on the interfacing. Press ties in half lengthwise, then fold raw edges in and press again.

Step 2: Mark the Zippers

Lisa has a great tute here for sewing zips at U-Handblog - fold the pocket panel in half and mark the halfway point. I placed zips 3cm and 13 cm below the middle line.

Draw the markers for the zips. Pin one of the lower pocket pieces to the pocket panel, right sides together lining up the bottom raw edges.

Step 3: Sew the Zipper Openings

Sew around the the zip opening and repeat for the upper pocket using an upper pocket piece. Pin the lower pocket piece you've just sewn to the pocket panel to keep it out of the way.

Step 4: Cut the Zipper Openings and Turn Out

Once stitched, snip open between the stitching as in the photo.

Pull the pocket lining pieces through the openings and press.

Step 5: Sew in the Zips

Pin the zips in place in the openings. Use a zipper foot to sew around the edges of the zip opening. Make sure you pin the pocket linings out of the way when doing this.

Step 6: Sew in the Pocket Linings

Sew the lining for the zipped pockets to the back of the zippered compartments taking care not to sew anything else in along the way!

Step 7: Topstitch the Pocket Panel

Press the pocket panel in half and topstitch along the fold.

Step 8: Sew Ring Holder

Take the ring holder piece and fold in half lengthways, then fold in the raw edges and ends, and pin. Stitch around the edges to hold it all together.

Step 9: Attach the Ring Holder

Sew a piece of velcro to one of the ends, and sew the other end onto the lining panel. Sew the other piece of velcro to the lining panel. You could use a snap here instead if the thickness of your fabric allows it. Make sure you reinforce the back of the lining where the snap goes.

Pin the pocket panel to the lining panel with ring holder attached

Step 10: Make the Ties, and Baste Ties and Pockets Onto Lining

Take the tie pieces and fold lengthways. Press the fold and fold the raw edges in, and press again (in the same way as the ring holder). Pin flat and sew around the edges of the ties.

Pin the tie tapes in the centre of the lining above the ring holder and baste in place. Baste the pocket panel to the lining panel and taking care not to catch the ties.

Tuck the ties into the pocket panel to keep them out of the way.

Step 11: Sew Lining and Outer Fabric Together

Pin the outer fabric and lining right sides together. Sew around the edges again taking care not to catch the ties. Leave a 10cm gap for turning. Trim the raw edges and snip off the corners. Turn right side out making sure to push out the corners.

Step 12: Topstitch to Finish

Pin the opening together with ties pulled outside, press and pin round the edges of the jewellery roll. Topstitch round the edges taking care to catch the lining and outer fabric.

Your jewellery roll is now ready to fill!
