How to make a VHS video toaster by lemonie
Featured
The inspiration for this project came from BBC TV's The Young Ones. This video clip should explain the idea well enough.

The project was simple: convert a VHS video machine to make toast, and eject it through the cassette slot.

If I thought anyone would attempt this (and they shouldn't) I'd offer the following warnings:
Ensure the metal parts are earthed (I did)
Do not place it on heat-sensitive surfaces.
Do not place heat-sensitive materials on top of it.
Take care not to touch any hot surfaces.
Do not leave the machine unattended.

I do believe I recall reading an idea of yours on this weeks ago... In the forum, mayhap? I'm glad to hear you executed it, this really is a wonderfully creative idea.

Not any more, I had a hair-cut last year and I shaved last week...

WOW! Such an imagination!! What an awesome idea!

This is an awesome job. I always like wacky interesting ideas, but it's really something else to actually do it and make the thing.

I think I would probably break all the components, burn down my house and/or electrocute myself if It tried this one, but respect to I love it.

and if you turn the toast upside-down, it says SHA!
lemonie (author) says: Aug 1, 2012. 1:38 PM
No it still says VHS.
The V & S would be upside-down though.

Beta makes better toast

It's not a real video toaster unless Wil Wheaton works for you.

;-)

EPIC!
emdarcher says: Feb 18, 2010. 6:40 PM
I think that the opposite of this would be pretty funny, you put the insides of the vhs player inside the empty toaster so you have a vhs playing toaster.

Or you could put a cd optical drive inside the toaster and put a blank cd in it and burn it, people will think you're literally burning it but you really aren't.
lemonie (author) says: Feb 19, 2010. 2:59 AM
I like the second suggestion - if you could have the disk pop-up like toast!

L
Kasm279 says: Feb 10, 2011. 3:27 PM
Really it would be easy, just get a slot loading optical drive, probably a laptop one, and an external enclosure for said drive and mount it in. Maybe wire the eject button to the lever...
M0HIZ says: Jan 8, 2012. 6:03 AM
Great idea!
emdarcher says: Feb 19, 2010. 5:23 PM
that would be a great addition!

you'd have to prevent the disc from falling out from the side though.

anyway, the humor is what matters right? :-)

Why didn't someone think of this sooner! Then, instead of filling up rubbish dumps with old VHS tapes, we could just butter them and eat them. You are an ECO genius.

I don't suppose you know how to turn an old CRT TV into a microwave oven while you're at it, do you? My microwave has blown up, but I've got an old TV in the garage no-one wants.

That's super awesome!

this whole project just gave me an amazing idea... what if you could make a printer that could print on food with food coloring? imagine, tortillas with funny pictures on them... definitely will have to think more on that one...

Not hard to do I think.

How did you make it burn the letters VHS into it??

Step 8, it's all in there.

this is the most absurd/awesome thing ever! totally brilliant.

Maybe i could make this and start mass producing toasts with Mary in it. Then I could sell them for $500

J-Five says: Mar 1, 2011. 4:20 PM
Can you now make a toaster into a VCR?
lemonie (author) says: Mar 2, 2011. 12:35 PM

If you put the electronics somewhere else maybe...

L
J-Five says: Mar 3, 2011. 6:03 AM
i was just kidding
Biggsy says: Jan 17, 2010. 11:14 AM
That has to be the BEST use of a VHS player i have ever seen.... EVEN better than the 80's vhs based child care i received as a child... if i had been sat infront of that instead of some crappy Disney movie a happpier well rounded Biggsy would be before you today!

Now to mod it to butter it when its on its way out the slot.... hmm
lemonie (author) says: Jan 21, 2010. 2:44 PM
Mmm, the butter is an interesting one. Sorry you were poisoned by Disney, have you thought about sueing? (Disney Corp must have cash?)

L
Biggsy says: Dec 26, 2010. 2:38 PM
It's almost a year on now... where is the butter mod? ;)
Tucber says: Jan 25, 2011. 4:17 AM
Lol, what were you doing on the computer on boxing day? =) Although to be fair I spent boxing day on the Xbox; but I was ill.
Biggsy says: Jan 25, 2011. 4:53 AM
I spent all christmas on my computer... Don't forget that some people don't celibrate Christmas.. I *should* but the Computer was more interesting ;)
lemonie (author) says: Dec 27, 2010. 12:44 AM

Oh yes, that. I didn't come up with an integrated device, buttering would need a separate machine so I left that as another idea.

L
Biggsy says: Dec 27, 2010. 2:32 PM
hehehe okay ;)

Really cool guide indeed. Would love to make one with my company logo on, how cool it's gonna be?
lemonie (author) says: Oct 7, 2010. 12:10 PM

What does the logo look like?

L
octopuscabbage says: Jul 20, 2010. 4:42 PM
Awesome instructable. I 'm gonna do this. You should've made them look like actual VHS tapes though.

Cut the bread? Mm, could be done...
