How to make a VHS video toaster

 by lemonie
Featured
The inspiration for this project came from BBC TV's The Young Ones. This video clip should explain the idea well enough.

The project was simple: convert a VHS video machine to make toast, and eject it through the cassette slot.

If I thought anyone would attempt this (and they shouldn't) I'd offer the following warnings:
Ensure the metal parts are earthed (I did)
Do not place it on heat-sensitive surfaces.
Do not place heat-sensitive materials on top of it.
Take care not to touch any hot surfaces.
Do not leave the machine unattended.

I do believe I recall reading an idea of yours on this weeks ago... In the forum, mayhap? I'm glad to hear you executed it, this really is a wonderfully creative idea.

This is an awesome job. I always like wacky interesting ideas, but it's really something else to actually do it and make the thing.

I think I would probably break all the components, burn down my house and/or electrocute myself if It tried this one, but respect to I love it.
azbud says: Jul 31, 2012. 7:24 AM
and if you turn the toast upside-down, it says SHA!
lemonie (author) in reply to azbudAug 1, 2012. 1:38 PM
No it still says VHS.
The V & S would be upside-down though.

EPIC!
emdarcher says: Feb 18, 2010. 6:40 PM
I think that the opposite of this would be pretty funny, you put the insides of the vhs player inside the empty toaster so you have a vhs playing toaster.

Or you could put a cd optical drive inside the toaster and put a blank cd in it and burn it, people will think you're literally burning it but you really aren't.
lemonie (author) in reply to emdarcherFeb 19, 2010. 2:59 AM
I like the second suggestion - if you could have the disk pop-up like toast!

L
Kasm279 in reply to lemonieFeb 10, 2011. 3:27 PM
Really it would be easy, just get a slot loading optical drive, probably a laptop one, and an external enclosure for said drive and mount it in. Maybe wire the eject button to the lever...
M0HIZ in reply to Kasm279Jan 8, 2012. 6:03 AM
Great idea!
emdarcher in reply to lemonieFeb 19, 2010. 5:23 PM
that would be a great addition!

you'd have to prevent the disc from falling out from the side though.

anyway, the humor is what matters right? :-)
wobbler says: Dec 2, 2011. 4:46 PM
Why didn't someone think of this sooner! Then, instead of filling up rubbish dumps with old VHS tapes, we could just butter them and eat them. You are an ECO genius.

I don't suppose you know how to turn an old CRT TV into a microwave oven while you're at it, do you? My microwave has blown up, but I've got an old TV in the garage no-one wants.

Now to mod it to butter it when its on its way out the slot.... hmm

What, 120 comments and not a single reference to the Video Toaster?? (the video editing system used on early 90's TV shows like Home Improvement, SeaQuest DSV, and even referenced as an obscure joke on the Duckman cartoon) Alas it didn't make actual toast, which makes it far less awesome than this one! Extra points for being inspired by the Young One's "video nasty".

could u try and mod it so the eject button on the vcr remote ejects the toast?
lemonie (author) in reply to nooriginalloginnamesFeb 23, 2009. 10:33 AM
I could but have you ever used a remote-control toaster? When the toast is done you go over to the toaster and pick it up. No remote needed.

L
Briguy9 in reply to lemonieJul 27, 2009. 8:02 PM
you would probably need a type of servo, if I had to take a guess, that activates when the signal is received from the remote to push the lever and eject the toast. I don't see the point in doing that unless you mega-modded the vcr to shoot the toast like 30 feet so you can toast bread and have it ejected from the remote and catch it in mid-air. I can imagine it now.
lemonie (author) in reply to Briguy9Jul 27, 2009. 11:23 PM

Great Instructable glad to be able to impart something from my font of useless information. I must admit that in these days of mass globalisation the English language in the UK is becoming more Americanised with the major manufacturers using American English in their documentation and the younger generation of British citizens are now adopting their terminology, I have even seen garages advertising Tires as opposed to the correct spelling of Tyres. It’s such a shame as it is our language, god I feel old.

The town crier yesterday announced that mozart was dead, and they would bury him later in the day.

Several days later, a drunk wandered into the grave yard, and heard strange noises coming from the Mozart grave.

Terrified, the drunk ran out and got the town mayor. The mayor listened carefully, and said "Ah, yes, it appears to be Mozart's 9th Symphony been played backwards... And theres the 8th... And theres the 7th..."

Later that day, the Mayor openly announced: "People, there is nothing to worry about. It is merely Mozart decomposing".

nruegs says: Feb 15, 2009. 5:47 PM
This is an excellent instructable, except that I will no longer be able to look at anything without considering how much better it would be as a toaster ever again.

I thought it might amuse (it did me) L
Kiteman in reply to lemonieFeb 15, 2009. 2:03 PM
How practical is it? Can you just pop in a slice of bread and pop out toast a few minutes later? I have this terrible image of the case melting and sagging, and what about the crumbs inside? It is brilliant, though.
lemonie (author) in reply to KitemanFeb 15, 2009. 2:08 PM
Well, I've tapped the bread to remove loose crumbs, they may have been a problem otherwise. I've been cautious on the heat, but the front-panel stays up rather well. As Step 7, I do want to install at least one fan. I had thought of using the vac or the blower but I got away with it.

And having cut so much of the plastic away most of the case is steel now.
