Picture of How to make a car-d-drive
This instructable will show you how to make a hard drive inside of a model car. I find it more aesthetically pleasing to have a model car on your desk rather than a plastic hard drive. When reading engadget one day, I came across this: http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/24/flash-rods-delorean-hard-drive-250-500-jigabytes/. It is essentially a model car with a 500 gig hard drive in it. It looked pretty cool, but it costed $250 and considering that 500 gb hard drives go for ~$50 these days, the price seemed a bit steep. So since I had a 500 gb portable drive and a model car lying around, I queued the music and set to work. This instructable is entered in the usb contest, so PLEASE VOTE!

Step 1: Materials

Picture of Materials
1 smallish portable hard drive however many geebies you want (Look in the pics for the one I used) ~ $50
1 1/18 scale maisto/bburago/mattel model car (I used a maisto one that they sell at costco for $7) but you can find a decent one for around $20 that will look good on your desk.
1 phillips screw driver
1 hammer/scissors/pen/knife/spoon/fork/phone/soda/ipod/thing that you can break plastic with

have you thought of laying the hd more flat and putting a printout of the inside of the car on it, something looking down and then just attaching the tops of the seats so they look original, all you would have to do to the body after that ir remove the license plate area so you can put your usb through there to plug it in and you dont see the hard drive through the windows

it is a datsun 240z
I've owned two fairladies (1:1 size) 25+ years ago, one is an older 4 speed. Is this a Tamiya 1:12 model? I build one (the model) 10+ years ago. Original color from the kit.

Great project! Good write up with enough detail that someone else could reproduce it.

One thing you might consider is rotating and re-saving your pictures (Preview can do it). A lot of them are sideways, and I'bles doesn't have software on the server to do the rotation for you. Just upload new versions and replace the ones here.

Thanks for the comment! I would rotate the pics and crop them in photoshop, but I was kind of pressed for time. However, I will upload new pics soon!
