First plug in your controller and test it out. The most important thing to do first is to see if you can press as many buttons as possible at the same time. For those of you who're a PC/Win user, go to Control Panel > Game Controllers > Find your pad in the list (if it's not visible make sure that it's properly installed and connected) > Click properties and press as many buttons as you can.

It's important later on that you do not use buttons that are not possible to combine with others as that will ruin everything in-game when you use the controller. The directional buttons are one of those. You can't combine left and right or up and down in most cases so make sure to not have that combination.

Now grab your nearest screwdriver and strip that gamepad! It's not hard, just remove every screw you can find - you don't need to be careful either. (some screws are usually glued so you might need to use force.) When you're finished and have removed unnecessary plastic parts you should have something like in the images below.
