I know these are reallyyyyy stupid question, but I'm new to the fishkeeping business... Does the bottle cap go on the inside of the tank and the ring holds it in place? Also, I don't understand how this attracts filth and muck. Explanation please... I can't tell cause your tank is already sparkling clean! :D Don't rage at me for being a complete noob :P

Yes, they are available commercially, but they are a tad pricey (especially compared to the cost of crafting your own). Also, this reuses materials, reducing post-consumer waste. TNEN, I would like to suggest gluing some cork on the inside part of the bottle cap to make it float. That way the scrubber goes to the surface and gets pushed to the tank walls by the filter, making it easier to recover with your magnetic ring.

Don't know if anyone mentioned  it but you need to glue the magnet/s  the correct way on both inner and outer pieces, otherwise you will have non-reverse polarity and they will repel each other............cracking little idea, gonna make three for my Musk turtle tank.

Would rare earth magnets work better the have a far greater pull and magnetism???

they can be normally forund in Spend Hard drive

Im going to give it a try too. My betta fish's bowl gets so yucky, this may help me from having to change the water so often :D!

Sure :)

My betta fish's bowl gets pretty nasty to, but I don't think he would like having a sponge in the bowl very much, it flares its gills at any new object I place around the bowl :)
Aug 15, 2009. 9:37 AMpyromonkey says:
Aww poor betta. I dunno how mine will react, he seems pretty cool with new objects.

Great instructable! Perhaps a bit of synchronicity, my father was just recommending I obtain one of these for cleaning my windows in my new apartment. It's on the seventh floor and they aren't the kind that easily pop out. I might have to make a new 'ible about it since I think the bottle cap would be a tad thick for the small gap between the panes.

The professional ones are only like five bucks, well here in south Texas..... I wish I would have seen this before I bought one, lol Great Ible

I'd be careful using a rare earth magnet like this in my tank. There's only a thin nickel/copper plating covering the neodymium-iron-boron core and I don't know if any of those metals would be too healthy for your fish, shrimp, snails, etc. Better cover the magnet surface with silicone so it never comes in contact with the water. What kind of tank is that in your video/pictures?

Just be sure you don't substitute one of those green scratch pads. Sometimes you will see a sponge that has a soft side and a green rough side. Scrubbing with the rough side will leave microscopic scratches in the glass. Over time, this will give the glass a hazy, or frosty look. you will really see it when you drain your tank and see the foggy effect left behind by repeated scrubbing. A razor blade scrapping will do the same thing. By the way experience is a wonderful, if sometimes painful, teacher.

After almost fifty nine years, I have a BA from the SOHK. (School of Hard Knocks). You might be able to polish scratches out, but I'm not sure what that would add to the fishtank chemistry.

Thats a really great idea and paqrat is right, if you have a tank with 90 degree angles, then a lego would be better. also, you could get a dish scraper (as shown), kind of like a sponge, take the outer layer off, and use that, as they are easier to clean. you can find them a dollar store, usualy in packs of three.

I think Brainchigger1 is right. You could eventually end up with your glass getting frosty on the inside to the point where you couldn't see your fish unless they bumped into it.
Aug 6, 2009. 8:09 PMNathanRay says:
btw its made of some kind of plastic, tho it looks metalish lol i dont care what its made of
Aug 6, 2009. 7:30 PMTommyhzy says:
Aha but what if the fish's blood iron content is so high they are stuck to the scrubber? :P Just kidding I just dip my whole hand in there, and give it a good scrubbing. None of that magnet stuff. It works a lot better, but make sure you wash your hands without soap first. Oh and nice Instructable, I could use that concept when making a project for school, that way I could connect 2 things on the opposite sides of a board that cannot be cut (:
Aug 6, 2009. 10:52 AMpaqrat says:
Very nice. A question; Have you tried to clean the velcro? And a couple of suggestions. Using a rectangular casing would allow you to get into corners better. Perhaps a lego block. One of the long thin ones would allow you into some narrow areas. You'd probably need to use two magnets on a long one. Two on each part, that is. Also if it were my tank I'd be concerned about the toxicity of hot glue. I'd use silicon seal. It would take longer to set up and hot glue might be perfectly safe but I wouldn't take the possible risk.
