I been working on this for about some time. I like to do thins that are not to expensive but does the job of something a lot more expensive. I think in this web page you can find lots of people doing the same, and that is REALLY helpful for all of us.

See more cool projects in my blog

Now you can find everywhere led projectors, some of them are really good, but also so expensive. You can buy a led projector here in Uk for about 100 pounds, but there are not to good, they need to be in a dark room and the size of the screen they project is about 21" witch is not really impressive.

So I thought i could try to make something similar, and if possible a bit better, and obviously a lot cheaper.

Here is the result, using 80 led of 13000mcd. I'm still not to happy about the result, because the light is not even, thats is because the angle of the LEDs do not allow them to be so close to the screen, so i decide to buy one of the new high power led and use it with a condenser lens.

I don't think i have pictures of the whole project but I'll try to gather as much inf and pictures i can to add it here.

Please keep in mind me english sucks and this is my first instructable.

In this video you can see the projector working, but in real life you can see the screen a lot brighter.

YO CAN SEE MY NEW PROJECTOR HERE

In this other video you can see the LEDs i'm using at the moment. (80pc 5mm led, 13000mcd) but soon i'll receive the 20w 1000lm high power led from hong kong. I'll post some videos as soon as i get it an try it.

And in this las video you can see briefly the led projector again, I'll try to make better videos and post them.

Thank you for reading and watching, I'll post the making of this projector step by step couse i'm a bit busy

Step 1: All that you need.

Ok, we just see it working, lets see if i can tell you step by step how i done it.

This is all what you need:

-MP4 player with a screen of about 2" (the better the quality of the screen the better the projection will be) Try to get it with AV in, mine does. The price of this may vary depending on the quality. about $60

-Project box. (or any other box you will lite to use, i like this project box because they are strong and they have slots to hold things in place) $5

-An old slide projector lens. $1

-Small fan, i used a 50mm fan (Maybe you don't need the fan, depending on how hot the circuit with the LEDs gets, i put mine because the resistors that came with the leds are not very good and they get hot.)--- i took this from an old pc processor cooler.

-Small switch.--- I took mine from an old PSU (power supply unit) easy to find.

-Power connector.---Just take it from any electronic device that you don't use, or buy one that is gonna cost about $1

-Some cables.---Any cables, you could use cables from the same old PSU

-Fresnel lens (magnified lens)--$1

-LEDs, this one has 80pc, 13000 mcd 5mm--$20

Not a bad projector for under $100 , I spend a little less because i had the MP4 player hanging around.

Now the tools you'll use:

-Soldering gun.

-Dremel rotary tool. (with cutting disk, and sanding bit)

-Some screws to hold the fan in place.

-Hot glue gun.

And that its all what you need to start this project.

NEXT STEP SOON

I have an old slide projector that I wnat to turn into video projector, following your instructions.
I didn't find any information about how to connect the projector to a computer...
Is it possible to project something directly from a computer ? How ?

hi i know you have mad a new projector. but for this one if you installed a couple of IR led's next to the camera you would have "night vision" and be able to see in the dark with it. the IR's arent detectable to the human eye either. but im sure you already knew that ;)

Hi!, I don't think you can use a 3w or 1w LED. To get the screen bright enuf you need something more powerful. I'm sorry you can't get the right LED.

omgitschrislol says: Oct 3, 2011. 2:23 AM
I know i don't do it all the way right, but i didn't use a LED driver because the 12V power suply i used is a 1,25A and the LED works between 1,4A and 1,8A

this confuses me a little. you say the power supply is 1.25 amp so for my example we will round up to 1.30 and the led works between 1.40 and 1.80 amps. with these numbers the psu isnt putting out enought amps to power the led. how is it possible that the psu is powering the led without the correct amperage? OR am i getting something horribly wrong.

hi. Can anyone comment on doing this vs pursuing an LED backlighting a old laptop computer panel i have. I saw videos and articles on making a $20 school style overhead projector shine thru LCD panel and make a decent and bright image. I'm thinking that the 1400x900 res would be great and an LED in the chassis instead of the bulb would rock. Anyone done it? can anyone compare for me before i embark on the project. Where can i get the best LED for that? thx in advance. I want to replace my Sony CRT which is 150lbs and huge. I love that i can leave it on all night, np, but LED woudl be better, cooler, and maybe make a few for my friends too. kinda excited.
libed91 says: Dec 15, 2010. 6:41 AM
If you want to use an LCD screen from a laptop i have to disappoint you because
laptop LCDs use low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS) protocol which is very different from what ordinary displays use (VGA,HDMI,...) that is why you can't re-wire your laptop LCD to any different widely-used connector such as VGA.
You would have to make somekind of a controller to convert standardized VGA, RCA, S-video signal to non standardized LCD signal that your laptop LCD uses.
And making such a controller is unimaginably hard (close to impossible) if you are not somekind of an engineering genious .
cptsilvertooth says: Dec 8, 2010. 12:40 PM
Great job! I'm a little scared about all the electricity involved, but I can't wait to try it!
Question: would using 2 of the high powered leds double the lumens and would you foresee any problems with doing that?
Thanks!

Hey there.  I am a video artist and would love nothing more than to master this art of projector building.

I started by searching for 30W bulbs and found this. http://cgi.ebay.com/30w-CREE-LED-Flashlight-Small-sun-Torch-Tactical-light-/320424772406?cmd=ViewItem&pt=US_Flashlights&hash=item4a9ace0336 its a tactical flashlight called the "small sun" which apparently uses a 30W light.  What's good about this is its both cheap (25 plus shipping) and it looks like it has that conversion lens you are talking about.

Any ideas whether its worth my money?  Thanks a millionbillion.
newtonn2 (author) says: May 12, 2010. 8:43 AM

Hi there!

I'm not sure if that torch would work. I would rather use the high power led.
It wont be a bad Idea to try tho.
soaringchicken says: May 18, 2010. 7:03 PM
Hey thanks for the reply.  I was just about to purchase a 30w 2200 lumen led light when something turned me on to HID.  What do you think about HID, is it blasphemous to even mention it here?  Here are the two links I am thinking about.

http://cgi.ebay.com/1x-High-Quality-30W-White-2400Lumen-Save-Power-LED-y-/310220081620?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item483a8ec9d4

http://cgi.ebay.com/35W-HID-Xenon-Torch-Flashlight-3500-Lumens-Spotlight-/250589253828?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a584890c4

I'm thinking of powering this thing with a car battery anyway, so would there be a huge issue with HID other than perhaps heat?

Thanks
-=Dr.Who=- says: Aug 23, 2010. 11:45 AM
Just a thought on HID (or any hot lights) used for the mini-projector builds. You might be able to use the hot HIDs and Incandescent type lights if you used a prism or maybe a couple mirrors to block the heat while still delivering the light. I'm thinking specifically of prisms from old broken telescopes. It will add some weight and a larger project box might be needed, but you could use some super bright lights without melting down your LCD. Just a thought.
newtonn2 (author) says: May 18, 2010. 11:20 PM
By the way, you need to get the 5000k temperature of the xenon, other temperature may make the colours funny on the projection.
newtonn2 (author) says: May 18, 2010. 11:17 PM

You could use the xenon. The only thing you'll need to improve is the cooling system as it will get hotter than the LED. I've seen people using this type of light source with a very good results.
DIY-Guy says: Oct 21, 2010. 12:14 AM
Very nice idea, the concept is simple and sound. (Although the heat can become a problem.)

Big fans, get bigger faster fans!
Or-
Cooling can be accomplished with a gold coated filter that blocks the infra-red. Heat can cook LCD displays easily.

(Sorry, no references or links to the IR filter are handy.)

will this projector work with a 20w halogen bulb instead of an led
-max- says: Jun 23, 2010. 6:39 AM
also, halogen is basically incandescent and will be HIGHLY inefficient it will require 80% more power also, infrared and heat radiation may destroy your LCD. you will need a filter to get rid of infared light (heat).

newtonn2 (author) says: Oct 18, 2009. 12:40 AM
It will works but the temperature of a 20w halogen bulb is very hot compare with the LED so it will require more powerful fans.

I think your circuit diagram is not correct. how come IN of lm350 is connected to Negative of bridge rectifier. Also i find something fishy with power led connected to REG of lm350
newtonn2 (author) says: Apr 14, 2010. 11:02 AM
You're right about the in of the LM350, I made a mistake with the outputs of the bridge rectifier. BUT there is nothing "fishy" on the LED connected to the REG of the LM350, as is connected so it will control the current, not the voltage.

Unlike many of us think this LCD is not a very high resolution one.  The 558 mentioned in this document indicate the number of dotes not the number of pixels. So, if we take each one for RGB 558/3 = 186 pixels horizontal. I just thought it may be useful to some one.
newtonn2 (author) says: Mar 31, 2010. 11:13 PM
Thank you for explain that, its good to know.

sorry i wrong size dimension is 558x234

showup,i bought from it .

from document:
number of dots 558(H) X RGB X234 (V)  DOT

for line si  558 X 3  DOT and when you project you see it!!
because you see same this picture on wall .
resolution of this display are same digital camera back screen.

i stop my project because have some problem :(
but i think restart it .

Thank you for the tip.

All the cells I found inside a notebook battery are 3.7v.  It's a good idea. I used some of those cells to power some LED's You can see here.

Did you finish the projector?

in finish .... need find good small frensel lens (my is too much opacue ) 45mm x 45mm

I got not idea, is one of those that has 4 circular light at the front. There is a picture of the back of the headlight in the instructable. But you can find many condenser lens in other cars headlights.

ok now i know how you made your projector so small you put the light, electronics and lens outside of the box. i need to get a box like that or make one because my cornflake box is not strong enough =]
newtonn2 (author) says: Mar 31, 2010. 11:24 PM
It's not only that, I had to take a lot of things into consideration. like the distances and the lenses I did use, as if you use a bigger LCD screen like yours, you will need a different main lens.

The lens you have will not focus the corners and the center of the screen.  I don't think you can even get everything evenly focus with the lens you are using. Am I right?
antonbergjr says: Mar 29, 2010. 10:18 PM
please  i dont get how u power the led?  can u just wire a 9v to it? or a 12v power charger

Good Work Newton. I am trying to follow you to make a small projector. I got a slide projector for $15.00. It works good. I just plan to replace the slide and slide holder  with a 1.8" LCD that we see here. It has about 558x234 pixels. If  the intensity of light and focusing are not limiting factors how big we can project an image out of 558x234 pixels without seeing pixelation effect?

Do you have any suggestion on better LCD which is 1.8 to 2.1" size range with better resolution?

Any suggestion is appreciated.

hi great projector! i just finnished mine and you can check it out on my instructables page. but i was wondering where you got a heat sink and how can i make my picture bigger without moving the whole projector away from the wall (zoom) do i just move the fresnel lens? thanks

hoping for you that you make it and came with good news!

what dc did you use to light it up -would a laptop dc be fine, or do you need other add like driver or so,,?

i see that you using pentium2 cpu as a cooler do you think that's enough >?
looks to me a little small cooling for that kind of heat,,
correct me if i am wrong.

thank you for everything and for your great help .

I would love to see something With Brighter LED's but no clue if you can get over 2000 lum with leds .It would last a hellova lot longer then these damn bulbs.
newtonn2 (author) says: Jan 20, 2010. 11:07 PM
For this project and my last one I used High Power LED, There are rated 1.8Lum and they last more than 10000hr
newtonn2 (author) says: Jan 7, 2010. 12:16 AM
Thank you very much! I'm almost done e with my other projector, I'm also making an Instructable of how I've done it.

I'm using a Laptop DC as my power supply, is rated 20v, I'm not using an LED driver, but with a voltage regulator LM350 I'm getting the voltage down, and I checked the amps wile doing so. It not consuming more than 1.7A.

The heat sink was only provisional, I used later a smaller one, but with a fan. It gets a bit hot, I wish I would of use a bigger one... so... you'r right!

Here is a preview of the projector.... It's bigger than this one, but the LCD is also bigger and it has a lot more quality.

antonbergjr says: Mar 23, 2010. 9:58 PM
couldnt u just use this lcd screen in ur other projector? for this instructible
mcastles says: Jan 7, 2010. 10:48 AM
Wow!! Nice newton!

The light is so nicely evenly distributed. Even looks like a projector you would buy out in the market. I see you got the corners of the projection without round edges. Not bad for a 3.5 inch at 640 by 480!

WELL WELL newtonn :)) some kind of creation lucky man-great work!!!

just tell me.. how do you find in a street this great  ZOOM LENS.. ha..? ..
i wish we have those left over parts in our streets too - LOL..

one more thing about the USB - i must say that's was the most interesting part!!
that's what make your project with digital signals (A\V in is only analog signals) wasn't realy clear how it made in pictures, and  i wish you could add this part in video too -that will make it perfect -can you?

thank you newtonnand keep up your great work :))

dnelaa says: Jan 7, 2010. 2:13 AM
very nice !!
about the dc supplier do you think this can do? -dc power
when it says ~4.5A but the led need only 1.6ma that's ok?
newtonn2 (author) says: Jan 7, 2010. 3:29 AM
It's ok only couse I'm using the LM350 which is a voltage regulator, I'm using a potentiometer to change the voltage and I connected a ammeter, so I regulate the voltage until the ammeter mark 1.7A, so I don't think is the best thing to use, but I din't find any driver for this LED, and if there is one it will be expensive for sure.
dnelaa says: Jan 7, 2010. 6:45 AM
ok ..
but what if i get a dc power with right voltage and can get up to 4.5A Max- will it light the 30w led?
i let have a link to this dc did you see it ? here the link again:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.25143

newtonn2 (author) says: Jan 7, 2010. 7:24 AM
Hi, sorry I didn't answer your question. That dc will be enuf for the LED. But if you connect it strait to the power supply without anything to stop the LED getting the 4.5A it'll burn. The LED I'm using is rated 1.8A. but it need to be limited couse the LED will suck us much amps as it can, and it wont last.
dnelaa says: Jan 7, 2010. 2:06 PM
I SEE interesting ..that means what ever dc you have even with the right voltage and with the right amper it won't last.. cause it need to be limited, only the right driver will do, right

newtonn2 (author) says: Jan 7, 2010. 10:56 PM
Something I forgot to mention is that you can find a dc with the right voltage and amps, but then you will need another dc power supply  for the lcd, speaker, usb multimedia player, etc....

once I'm done with my project you will be able to see how I've done it.

newtonn2 (author) says: Jan 7, 2010. 10:49 PM
If you have a dc with the right voltage and the right amps it will last. That's what the driver do. But what I made, it's going to make the LED last as well, couse with the lm350 I did limit the amps to 1.7.
dnelaa says: Jan 9, 2010. 11:25 AM
newtonnthats make sence..:)
something els:
i have triple lens = (from a slide projector) 1:2,8 /90mm, i wonder if that would will be good for 5 or 7 inch  lcd project ..i understand that it needs to have certain size to fit the lcd. isn't it?
newtonn2 (author) says: Jan 9, 2010. 11:28 AM

You won't be able to use a slide projector lens, It will not focus the full screen. I tried 100 times LOL.

You can't use that type of lenses with LCD more than 2".
mcastles says: Jan 8, 2010. 3:51 PM
I'm not sure but I think I read somewhere, that if the voltage is the same but the amps/watts are more than it takes it is O,k for the device that say uses 30 watts and the watts on the plug is 50 watt or more it won't damage it. Unless.. I read what the guy on e-bay wrote said is wrong. :/
newtonn2 (author) says: Jan 9, 2010. 12:30 AM
You may be right mcastles, when I tried with my bench power supply the LED once I got it working with 16V the amps where 1.8 which is the rated for the LED. But some charger are rated 16v but they are really 16.5V or more, so in that case the amps will raise to almos 1.9A o 2A, There is not that mach difference in brightness from 16v to 15.5v or so.   I have mine working at 1.7A so I'm making sure it will last.
Elemental LED staff says: Jan 18, 2010. 5:41 PM
Great job. This seems like it will work just fine until the day you can get a little OLED panel into a projector.
newtonn2 (author) says: Jan 19, 2010. 12:23 AM
I don't think is possible to use the OLED for this project as it has not backlight.  It would be cool tho.
matthewkhoury75 says: Jan 16, 2010. 4:19 PM
Hey newtonn. my led is coming in from china, it is the same one you have. I have a broken portable hard drive that has a 12v 2A transformer. will this work with the led??
newtonn2 (author) says: Jan 17, 2010. 1:11 AM

You really need to find a smaller transformer if you want to run the LED without driver. Id you use the 2A maybe the led will last less.

It will be ideal if you find something about 1- 1.2A
matthewkhoury75 says: Jan 17, 2010. 10:17 AM
Ok. I have some questions.
1) I dont really understand the wiring schematic, so maybe you could make me a different one that is colored. I dont think I am going to use a led driver because I dont know what that is.  Here are the volts if you need them. The lcd is 12v, the fan is 12v, .08a  and the light is the same as yours.
2) Is everything wired together in the box, and then there is a transformer outside the box, or are there seperate transformers in the box and a power chord extends everything to the wall??
3) Where can I find a fresnel lens and a slide projector lens??
4) how big is your project box, My lcd is bigger than yours and I dont know if it will fit in the project box. Here is a link to it http://cgi.ebay.com/new-2-5-TFT-Color-LCD-Car-Reverse-Monitor-DVD-VCR-VCD_W0QQitemZ350305407590QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item518fd45266 maybe this will help.
5) where did you get your fan thermometer,??? the fan I have works very slow at 12v and I think it may need a thermometer.

Thanks in advance.

Hi there! Thank you very much! I'm happy that my instructable is helpful for you. The LED i bought from Hong Kong, on ebay, so it'll be easy for you to find i guess. But the mp4 is an old model from overtech, they used to have it in they web page, but not any more. there is a picture of it in my Instructable, it's all what i have, sorry i can't help you, but the mp4 was given to my as faulty and i fixed it, so i don't have any manual or anything. I would love to see you projector when you finish.

 The LED

The lens came from a slide projector.
And the LCD came from a mp4 player.

dnelaa says: Dec 13, 2009. 7:22 AM
newtonn2 what do you think of this led and ac driver? :  led+driver
how hot that will be and with what kind of cooler i need to add to it..?
also i don't understand why i need a driver..can i just get dc power that fits and that will do ..?

newtonn2 (author) says: Dec 13, 2009. 2:58 PM
That led looks really good. I never use a LED that powerful so I'm not sure about the heat sink you will need, but I think it will be enuf a P4 heat sink, I would even use the fan just to make sure.

The driver control de flow of electricity as well as the voltage which it will make the LED last longer. In my projector I did not use the driver, I just got a power supply with the right voltage and amps for the LED and so far so good.

dnelaa says: Dec 14, 2009. 7:37 PM
Thank you newtonn2 for your opinion about the Led - thinking about buying this led and the 3.5# monitor.
take a look at this sketch i made - the tablet  stands in  A4 paper size (standard printing paper) - do you think the parts will stand , i mean the distance between the lens, the mirror, ext ...is  it  ok? do you think i should drop the mirror and just do it straight  .
correct me if i am wrong - Thank you very much for your help!
g=450.jpg
newtonn2 (author) says: Dec 15, 2009. 7:17 AM
Every thing is looking really good! I think the distances are right, maybe the fresnel a bit closer to the LCD, but it will be better if you try everything b4 getting the enclosure. If you're using a LED you don't need the templated glass, as is only use the reduce the heat when using halogen or metal halide lamps.

About the mirror, if you can fit it it will allow you to get the lens closer to the enclosure. I thing you should be able to make it even in an smaller enclosure as an A4 seams a bit big for me. In any case once you have everything, give a try and you'll see how big or small the enclosure need to be.
dnelaa says: Dec 16, 2009. 7:21 AM
dnelaa says: newtonn2 the templated glass is just to be sure.. i mean i dont know how hot the led will be that might damge the lcd.

but if  you say no need than what do you think the distance should be between the led to the the fresnel lens  ..?

BTW how hot do think your 20W led is about without the heat sink -?

something else about your project here.. i pay attention that the Projection screen corners are slightly rounded and not squared as your other project that you made using an OHP.. is it the projector lens or do i miss something ?
THANK YOU so much - you're great help !
ssjj.jpg
newtonn2 (author) says: Dec 16, 2009. 8:33 AM

If you have already the templated glass you can use it. The LED will get really hot without the heat sink, I would not use it without it. What I would do is try with a heat sink for the LED and with no templated glass (as the templated glass will affect the brightness of the projector), If there is not more than 30 C in the LED, I would not be worry about the temperature.

The round borders in my LED projectors are down to not have enough space to separate the LED from the LCD. I made everything b4 replacing the 80 small LED's for the 20w high power LED and I did wanted to keep it small.

dnelaa says: Dec 3, 2009. 2:13 PM
i see ..ok.
what about the led , the lamp ext .. any links to eBay ?
another question if i may ask, is your mp4 support IN video composite..?
most of the simple mp4 goes only with flash memory and not with in video  composite.
newtonn2 (author) says: Dec 4, 2009. 12:02 AM
I did put a link to and ebay. Click on LED, that's a link.
About the rest of your questions, everything is on my instructable.

The Mp4 player support video composite in. There are not many with that feature, it was build to be able to record to the internal memory from the composite.  Sadly the mp4 I used is not longer available. But if you look in the comments I did find one, and it was from HK I think. See this one.

newtonn2 (author) says: Sep 20, 2009. 4:14 PM
I need a better picture, anyway, i think if it has 9 chips inside it would b a 10w led and if it has 16 chips is a 20w led.
ngaiki says: Sep 21, 2009. 8:21 AM
hi savagenight i'm from hk too,
so did you buy that LED from shen shui po?
i saw that too in one of the stores there.
but i found it really expensive. i guess it should be a 20W for that price. (another assumption is that it works between 12V to 14V with 1.X A. then that should add up with a rated power of at least 20W ) . you'd better ask for the maximum current allowed. that's crucial. it'll drive you crazy if your driver burns the expensive LED. though you'll be able to save part of those chips inside if you act quick enough.
i went to shenzhen with my friend an bought a 20W LED for just RMB$90 with the condenser lens. but if you go there make sure you got lots of stuffs in your shopping list to balance the transportation fee to shenzhen.
yet i bought a brighter 30W from ebay and it costs me around HK$280. i've finished the whole driver for my player, led and the fan and pack them in a PCB. and that works well too. and i'm waiting for the projection lens from the US. hope it arrives soon so i can start the installation. here's the picture of my driver set and the after-connection. and again thanks for newtonn2's instructable and his inspiration. cheers =]

hi ngaiki!
i did really buy it from shen shui po,haha
it cost HKD$99 each, it has 9 chips inside, and they just told me work at 12v,
thanks for your advice,i will go ask them again.
besides, could you teach me how you make the circuit ?(it would be great if you also know how to make it work with rechargeable battery too)
on the other hand, what mp4 are you using?
infact, i want to make the projector size as small as it can, but its hard to find a mp4 lcd which is under 2" with not bad resolution.
thank you very very much for your reply and teaching,(specially with those photos).
also, thanks for newtonn2's instructable. =]
ngaiki says: Sep 23, 2009. 10:29 PM
yea then i think newtonn2 is right, it should be a 10W led, sorry.
the mp4 i'm using was the 4.3" 'ainol'. it's expensive but it got whole lot more pixels then an ordinary 4.3". i don't know if the whole picture could pass through the projection lens but i'm just trying to make it happen. if that doens't work i'm gonna buy a 2.5" to 3" one. i guess 1.8" will not produce a satisfactory result. (unless u really enjoy the 'pixels' =p) i assure u that a 3 inch screen won't be too big. btw why do you wanna use rechargeable batteries?

i don't know if the batteries could stand that long. the LED, fan and portable media player will take up quite an amount of energy from the batteries..anyways i think you still need a magnifying glass as the projection lens. but i guess the quality won't be as sharp as using a triplet. if that's a school project, you could simply save your money for a normal magnifying glass and you should check the focal length before you buy it. make sure it fits your fresnel lens. =]
just a suggestions, search for more on the net =p

 Hi
I would like to ask about the light source.
Can the light source be a halogen lamp, or do I nead a led? what are the pros and cons of them?

And if I nead to buy the led, when can I buy it on the net?

Thank you for your replay

newtonn2 (author) says: Dec 13, 2009. 3:01 PM
You can use a halogen lamp but it will be really hot, so you will need to add a good fan to cool it down, also the power consumption is a lot more with the halogen lamp.

To find the led, go to ebay and search "high power led" somewhere in the comments there's a link to ebay.

hi ever one Just wanted to say this looks cool I am trying to make it now. I have just got the 20w 13-15v 1.5A LED on ebay the same as the one in the photo above I found that the leg labled as + positive in the photo was - negative on my led I am now trying to get the parts to make the LED driver YOU WILL NEED TO USE ONE IF YOUR POWER supply puts out more than 1.5A I tryed to use a 12v @ 4.16A the led was very very bright but it almost cocked it. IT was smoking after being on for only 10 seconds on a big copper heat sinck !!!

newtonn2 (author) says: Oct 18, 2009. 12:43 AM
You can, but the projector will have to be a lot bigger, and you won't be able to use the slide projector lens.

I've done another projector with a 7inch screen from a portable dvd player and using the lenses of an OHP, you can see it here.

sir i would like to ask if what is the input device of the projector, and what is the function of led?
newtonn2 (author) says: Nov 18, 2009. 12:16 PM
The projector has a compositive input as well as SD card. The LED is what projects the light thru the LCD
mr monoply33 says: Nov 12, 2009. 1:54 PM
I am quite lost on how to do set up & ire the LED array, any time I try to do more than 10 LEDs none lite. I can get 5 reliably. I've tried this idea with a few different methods of lighting, I'd like to use this dvd player screen I have already striped its about 5 inches...

hello, I'm thinking of making my first projector project,
I tend to do a larger projector based on the infos on this project (the other one you posted seem too hard for me to understand and if i get it right I'll need to get a projector light wich cost hundreds (I cant find an ohp)

What I currently have is an emerson LCD-0700E LCD extra screen.

I was wondering if i could use parts of an old PJ768 Projecta scope I got when i was was 15 years old.(http://www.amazon.com/Project-A-Scope%C2%AE-Image-Projector/dp/B000RSKZ8C)

There is a small mirror inside About 2 inche by 2 inches inside
and a small lense.
Honestly I think my screen will be too large to use theses as parts.

Id like to have an expert opinion :P

Thanks
newtonn2 (author) says: Nov 4, 2009. 12:03 AM

Hi there!

For the size of you LCD, I really would go for the OHP project.
I used the OHP because it's really easy to find them here and really cheap.

You don't need to buy a projector light, you could use metal halide, they works very good, they last 100 times more than a conventional ohp light and they are a lot whiter.

I'm not sure about the mirror and lens, maybe once you have you LCD ready and the light source, you could try them to see if they work with your setting.
gazoutg says: Nov 7, 2009. 11:54 PM
Thanks for the answer.

I see on this site that they sell a ballast to power the light.
Do you know if it's required?
As far as I know ballast are used to reduce intensity and thats bad in a projector ain't it?

Thanks again
newtonn2 (author) says: Nov 8, 2009. 12:00 AM
All the DIY projectors that I've seen using that type of lamp uses the ballast. I also have an OHP witch uses the same type of lamp and is fitted with a ballast.
But in the link you send me there is a Electronic Ballast, they are really expensive, you could use a normal ballast, there are more heavy and get hotter, but they are a lot cheaper.

newtonn2 (author) says: Oct 23, 2009. 2:15 PM
It's going really good, I finally got the lens from USA, but the other day my bench power supply stopped working, so know I'm making me another bench power supply a bit better than the last one, so I had to leave the projector at the side until I finish my bench power supply which I need more.

How is yours? were you able to see the movie  OK the other day?

mcastles says: Oct 24, 2009. 1:54 PM
That's cool, a new lens!

Yea, I did watch the movie but after playing around with the lenses and the light I got a better picture, I now watch t.v shows on it almost everyday. Your PSU stopped working that to bad. I know those PSUs are tricky sometimes because I got mine working after I hooked up the gray wire to some other wire not sure which one, and then I heard a loud shock. I hooked up the red and black wires to the light after and it worked as before it didn't I am not sure why. :/

But I am still glad it is working.

I CANT FIGURE OUT THE RESOLUTION  OF THE TV . WHAT RESOLUTION WOULD U RECOMEND FOR A GOOD SCREEN AND WHAT IS THE MP4 U HAVE THAT HAS AV INPUTS
newtonn2 (author) says: Oct 18, 2009. 8:15 AM
That really depends on the size of the screen you want to project.

The one I'm using is not too good. It's really difficult to find a LCD that small with a lot of resolution. so... go ahead and use that TV you could always update later if you find something better.

I just realized that the one you link to is no good because it only has a 50 hour lamp life. If you do end up getting a halogen I would go for this one it has a 3000 hour lamp life much longer life span.

Sorry I misread the specs on the one you linked...http://cgi.ebay.com/MR16-12V-100W-100-watt-Halogen-Light-Bulb-60-Deg-JCDR_W0QQitemZ270201097665QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item3ee93d8dc1&_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116

That is a really good one I think, yea I would go with that one. I know 50 watts dose not require a fan of any sort, but a 100 watt I'd imagine would be pretty hot maybe hot enough to burn cardboard, once I get my 100 watt lamp I am going to have to put a fan on the box to pull the hot air out. What might you use to power it?

Hi, Thanks for a great intsructable, I am attempting to build one. So far I have: 30W bright white high power led,19V 1.58A dc laptop adapter, pc processor heatsink /12V fan, 640x480 3.5" 12V lcd car reverse monitor and a slide projector lens of f 2.9/105mm as well as a condenser lens from an old unknown slide projector. I have also ordered a page magnifier fresnel. Do you think that this setup is possible or is the lcd screen too large (>2.5")? Why is this an issue? Thanks again Nick
newtonn2 (author) says: Sep 15, 2009. 12:22 AM
You're welcome! I'm glad you like my Instructable. I think your have almost all what is needed, there is something wrong though, the slide projector lens will not focus a LCD of 3.5", it'll only focus part of the screen. I'm making another projector with a 30w LED and a LCD of 3.5", i'm making video of almost everything i'm doing. I'll post an Istructables as soon as i finish it. If i can help you any other way, just let me know.
nickstephensen says: Sep 15, 2009. 6:04 AM
Hi again, Thanks for the reply. Can't wait to see the video of the 30w led and 3.5" lcd projector!. What kind of lens (projector?) would you use for this? I have ordered a 2.5" lcd with resolution 882 x 228. Hopefully this will work with the setup I described earlier. Nick
newtonn2 (author) says: Sep 15, 2009. 6:28 AM
I'm not sure of with lens to use jet, I got two copy machine lenses, I think they will works, I don't have them jet, so I'm waiting to see if they would work with my setup. I think the LCD of 2.5 would work just fine, where did you buy it from? it not a bad resolution! So far I got the lcd mounted in place with the board on top, and the lcd fitted to the heatsink and the condenser lens fitted too. As soon as I get the lenses I'll let you know if they works or not. I try with a OHP lens, but the focal length is 320 or so, so the projector would have to be really far from the wall to be able to see a big screen.

I noticed this Led in the PDF file. I bought one of these and was wondering how you connected the leads. I cannot seem to find any data sheet for it. I believe mine is defective since only 5 of the 18 chips will light and it only draws about 400ma. from my 13.8 volt 4 amp supply.

newtonn2 (author) says: Sep 11, 2009. 5:52 AM
I know that picture LOL, you've got you LED from hong kong, right? something that I said in a comment in my Instructable is that warm light won't work as good as bright light. Bright light LED are more "bright" witch is good for the projector, but secondly and more important, warm white will make the colours of the LCD look funny, not real.

I guess you have this one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1x-High-Quality-20W-Warm-White-1000LM-Save-Power-LED-F_W0QQitemZ400071854179QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item5d26240863&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14#ht_2129wt_958
Which is rated:Color Temperature: 3000K

This one is better, is is rated:Color Temperature: 5500K
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1x-High-Quality-20W-White-1000-Lumen-Save-Power-LED-F_W0QQitemZ400072201600QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item5d26295580&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14#ht_2107wt_958

ok, the LED you have is rated 13.5 ~ 15.0 Vdc, why don't you try at 14.5 or even 15v, and see what happen.
Do you have a bench power supply?
If not, why don't you make one? i have and instructable that explains how to make it.
Improviser says: Sep 11, 2009. 3:12 AM
Great Instructable!!! I saw the square high powered Led in the PDF file but there was no reference to it. I purchased a 20 Watt Warm White that looks identical to the square one but it is defective (only 5 out of the 18 chips light up) so now I have to wait for a replacement. Did you use this one? How did you make your connections to the Led? I cannot find any data sheet for this Led at all. I've got my screen and optics all ready to go.
newtonn2 (author) says: Sep 11, 2009. 5:40 AM
Hi there! Which LED Are you talking about? The one that's show in the last step on my instructable? That one is for another projector I'm making. B4 you take you LED back, did you check that you're using the right voltage? The square LED i have won't work properly with about 13V, mine does the same at 13v, only a few chips lights up. I need at least 14.5V to get all the chips working. Where did you get the LED from? If you say that it's 20w and 18chips, i think it will works with more than 13.8V.

I was also wondering about mp4 player video input. Can you connect your laptop to it or can you only play videos stored on the memory of mp4 player?
newtonn2 (author) says: Sep 11, 2009. 5:28 AM
Hi! I'm glad you like my instructable.
I did need all the lenses, but you could try without the condenser and see how it looks.

The condenser lens came from a headlamp of an old BMW.
The fresnel lens you show in the link I don't think will works.
The one i'm using is just a magnified fresnel lens like this one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/XL-Magnifier-Fresnel-Lens-Full-Page-Magnifying-Sheet_W0QQitemZ160360480021QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_3?hash=item25563abd15&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14#ht_2006wt_1000

but i mine is hard, i don't know about that one.

The slide projector lens it's ok if you're using a LCD not bigger than 2.5"
I got it from a boot sale.
My mp4 has a AV in connector, so i can connect it to anything, but the pixels are not enuf to use it with a computer.

You could do a test by putting a light behind it and do a bit of estimation do give you an idea of how big it might be, I'd imagine that would work. But I think your calculation is about right anyway. I found a 3.5 inch LCD display for you (640x480), from Hong kong. Not 800X600 or 1024X768. I have never seen 3.5 inch at those resolution, not yet anyway. But heres a link.

i've found one here in hong kong a 4.3 inch mp4 having 800 x 480. however it doesn't take AV-in or VGA. it got usb and SD card slot instead. will it be a good choice? or it just makes no difference with those you suggest. as i notice the one on ebay has only the AV-in feature. and also how do i connect the speaker to the system? should i get any amplifier for the little mp4 so as to produce a better sound quality? you know it's really a loss if the sound quality is crappy despite the high res. picture.
mcastles says: Aug 27, 2009. 1:39 PM
800 X 480 thats not bad, I think it would be a bit difficult if it doesn't have audio out and video in, I think there is more options having a a video in. (You can hook up a vcr, cable tv , dvd player, video games and such.) If the SD card version has a headphone out, you could attach it to any kind of stereo amplifier, mines hooked up to a amplifier as well one of those 5 speaker surround sound speaker systems. I am not sure about usb though, i'm not sure what that dose. But yea.. I would get an amplifier for it for sure.
ngaiki says: Aug 28, 2009. 12:57 AM
yea it does have an audio out i forgot to mention it though. thanks for the comment =] but now i'm stuck with another problem. it's that i found ppl in forum says SLR lens could not be used as a projection lens. that means my SLR lens-plan is ruined..aww..

i've search for "camera lens as projection lens" and there's one post said that's impossible because the traditional camera lens won't be able to collect the whole image from the LCD panel unless the panel is a matchbox-size. It seems to be correct but then i wonder is it possible for the fresnel lens or the other lens to correct the path of the light rays so that the whole image could pass through the camera lens? or does anyone knows if the slr lens could work without any extra lenses? i still could not do the test because i don't have all the things i need right now. (light source is not arrived yet...) It would be great if somebody knows the theory. =]

I am planing to build a 15" lcd projector and I have this 1800 lumen in my mind. I will use two. What do you think? I will remove the antiglare from the screen so the light should pass easier.
newtonn2 (author) says: Aug 15, 2009. 7:08 AM
That's cool! I would suggest to use only one LED, maybe a 50W LED, instead of using 2 LEDs. The output would be better and more powerful
ngaiki says: Aug 24, 2009. 10:56 PM
What's the total lumen for your original design? that is the one with lots of LEDs. Thanks! I think I would also try that first cuz it's much cheaper than a high power LED.
newtonn2 (author) says: Aug 25, 2009. 12:08 AM
I don't really know, but trust me, it's not worthy to make it out of many LED's, my first design was not too good, you could see black spots between LEDs, why don't you buy only one power led of 20w? there are know cheap.
uekisan says: Jul 7, 2009. 6:21 AM
emm my lcd is blocking 60 percent of light
guymark says: Aug 11, 2009. 2:26 PM
I think that this is a result of how the LCD unit works - they have a polarising filter - so unfortunately around 50% of the light tends to be lost even when the lcd is displaying a "white screen". I don't know if using a polarised light source instead of a polarising screen would improve efficiency - but I don't think I know of any handy polarised light sources - let alone white ones. There ARE ways around it - using exotic optics to reflect the polarised light that would normally be blocked, optically twist it though 90 degrees and then bang it back again. Fancy stuff aside, the reality is sadly, 50% of your light source is immediately turned into heat - unless you pre-polarise and feed two separate screens and try to re-combine the output (and arrange to drive one with a video source rotated 90 degrees. with this fab little design though, excellent results from modest power consumption means you could even risk splashing out for a 50w LED. They dio make a 100w now by the way..... :)
ngaiki says: Aug 24, 2009. 10:52 PM
Thanks for the sharing =]
100W LED is a bit pricey for me though. and i saw some 1W to 3W LEDs on ebay. I would like to know if i could put them together to make a nice and neat light source? (Shapes of those LEDs are so awkward..)
newtonn2 (author) says: Aug 25, 2009. 12:18 AM

ngaiki says: Aug 25, 2009. 1:03 AM
Okay!
I also notice that you have a few meters of throw distance. But for me there's only less than two meters space in my room. Would a 10W be enough? Or is it better to have a brighter led whatever distance I have?
Thanks for your patience. =]
newtonn2 (author) says: Aug 25, 2009. 9:17 AM
I would still get the 20W there is not much different in price and it's a lot more powerful. I'll be glad to answer any of your questions.
ngaiki says: Aug 27, 2009. 8:17 AM
by the way, a question on the high power led drive. since the one demonstrated in the instructable provided here is for 1W - 3W LED. Do I have to adjust the values of the components so as to feed the 30W LED?
mcastles says: Aug 22, 2009. 8:06 PM
I was thinking about the polarizing lens part on my 2.5 inch LCD, I wondered the same thing you were thinking that I would get light to pass through better by taking it off the LCD with a thin knife. I did just that, then I installed it back on my projector and found out the LCD is useless now..lol . The LCD needs the polarizing lens so the image somehow gets projected on the display it self. Well..now we know. : )..lol
guymark says: Aug 23, 2009. 4:51 AM
Well so long as you haven't thrown it away or caused other damage when removing the polarizing filter from the back, either just put it back on - or use another bit of polarising film to replace it. I might be wrong but I think you can "de-useless-ise" you lcd panel as simply as popping a filter back in again :
mcastles says: Aug 23, 2009. 10:06 AM
Yea, I'm going to have to buy a new one, its O.K the LCD had some discoloration problems before I even took the polarization film off. I was going to buy a new one anyway. Can't really put it back on I tried, when I used a knife to take it off it kind of damaged the film. It's all good. :)
mcastles says: Aug 23, 2009. 10:15 AM
Also the polarization film split and bit and pieces came off, though I could put it back on the LCD it would work again if my polarization film was in good condition had I been more careful taking it off.

with all tube you able to project fine up 5" lcd with only 2 part only max 2" lcd better 1.5" and have circle angle you don't have good rear illumination.

I'm wait pled and final lcd for assemble prototype. for testing I using mobile phone pda digital camera display whit original backlight .

mcastles says: Aug 11, 2009. 4:12 PM
You probably could use that enclosure but you might need improvise to make it fit.The kind of projection lens your looking for is "F number small like 2.8 or smaller, and the focal lens 100 or less in mm that would be 4 or less in inches"

Hi would you be able to sell me a diy kit for this projector and if so how much also, (as you can't tell 100% from images) what is the quality of the screen like. Thanks
newtonn2 (author) says: Jul 14, 2009. 12:04 AM
Sorry i don't sell the kit, i just made it with things i had around the house, the only thing i remember baying is the high power LED. The quality of the screen is not as good as i would like it, you can see the pixels, i think you can see in this picture http://www.instructables.com/files/orig/F9Y/G210/FP9CT2RE/F9YG210FP9CT2RE.jpg

If you are watching from 4meter or so, it's ok.

I'm working in other better, with a screen a bit bigger. I'll make an instructables as soon as is finish, but i'm afraid it will take a bit of time cause i'm really busy at the moment.
ronnie-1995 says: Jul 14, 2009. 9:31 AM
Would a portable dvd player screen be better quality?
newtonn2 (author) says: Jul 25, 2009. 1:01 AM
The quality of some dvd player are really bad, some of then show lines in fast action movies due to the lack of pixels. if you can see the dvd player working and you are happy with the quality, normally it will be better than small screen. But the box you'll need will be a lot bigger like oli1122 said, and you will have to fit inside the circuit of the dvd player. I just got myself a small screen 3.5" with a good 640*480 pixels. I'll let you know how is it.
mcastles says: Jul 25, 2009. 1:33 AM
I hope to one day find a cheap 640 by 480 2.5" screen, that would be awesome!

how cool do the leds run
newtonn2 (author) says: Jul 25, 2009. 12:56 AM
if you using the one power LED you just need to fit it in a good heatsink and have a small fun even running a 5v (a 12v fun running a 5v), so it doesn't make much noise, That'll be more than enuf. But if on the other hand you are using many small LEDs with resistors, this resistors get really hot, so you do need a good fan.
oli1122 says: Jul 24, 2009. 3:51 PM
they get quite hot so you will need a pretty good fan to keep them cool. im usin a 12V one.
19charbel96 says: Jul 16, 2009. 1:54 PM
why to use FRESNEL LENS? can i not use it?
newtonn2 (author) says: Jul 25, 2009. 12:52 AM
The fresnel lens helps to distribute the light evenly in the lcd, so you don have some parts of the projector image brighter than other.
oli1122 says: Jul 24, 2009. 3:57 PM
because it condenses the picture in to the correct format to be projected through a lens. without it you will probably end up with only parts of the picture being projected. but they dont cost much and you can always get a small pocket page magnafyer. I used a cheep JML one
oaky8 says: Jul 24, 2009. 12:38 PM
How do you make the temperature sensor?
newtonn2 (author) says: Jul 25, 2009. 12:47 AM
The sensor came from a psu, it did have it, and you don't really need it, I just installed it to have the fun running slower and so doesn't make much noise.
oli1122 says: Jul 24, 2009. 3:52 PM
you dont make it but you dont even need a heat sensor his fan just happend to have one built in all you need is a powerfull fan should cost about £2-3 on ebay.
oli1122 says: Jul 12, 2009. 11:20 AM
newtonn2 (author) says: Jul 12, 2009. 12:10 PM

Don't get that one, it says its warm white, that means the light will be more orange than white, so the colours of the projections will be affected. The colour temperature of that one is around 3500k very orangeish, you need something like this one
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/20W-White-Bright-1000LM-Power-LED-Prolight-Light-Lamp_W0QQitemZ350219658628QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_BOI_Electrical_Components_Supplies_ET?hash=item518ab7e584&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12%7C66%3A2%7C39%3A1%7C72%3A1683%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50

This last one is rated 5500k , that's more like it.
mcastles says: Jul 10, 2009. 7:39 AM
You could probably get rid of those round edges if you moved the condenser lens back toward the light, but I think that would mean you would lose a bit of brightness, I had the same problem with my projector.
newtonn2 (author) says: Jul 10, 2009. 7:47 AM
I'm sure you right. The thinks was that I did not want the box to be bigger. How is your projector? did you install a high power LED?
mcastles says: Jul 10, 2009. 8:32 AM
No, I haven't yet. But it is tempting to get and try it. I ended up using a 12 volt halogen 50 watt reflector bulb. They sell the kind I got at corner stores here in Canada only $1.99, It works like 50 times better then using lights from above 50 watts halogen I was very surprised. I have updated my Instructable, you can see it here. http://www.instructables.com/id/100-watt-house-light-bulb-25-inch-Lcd-video-pro/ I think all I need is a better condenser lens..lol
newtonn2 (author) says: Jul 10, 2009. 8:42 AM
mcastles says: Jul 10, 2009. 10:26 AM
Hmm. that one is really high watts! If I used that one I would most definitely get super good daylight projection im sure of it and very cheap too, thanks for showing me that! I diden't even think of that, good idea! It will mean I will have to buy a 100 watt transformer next month. Thanks newtonn2!
mcastles says: Jul 10, 2009. 10:40 AM
But the only thing is the one you showed me is 50 hour lamp life. They have 100 watt 12 volt mr16 lamps from 50 to 200 watts here. http://www.servicelighting.com/51-200-Watt-MR16-Halogen-Incandescent-Light-Bulbs
If I used your 100 watt idea I may not need to replace the condenser lens that 100 watts is double of what I already have. But the one of the link I show you are 18 dollars a piece. still cheap but a little more expensive..
mcastles says: Jul 10, 2009. 11:15 AM
newtonn2 (author) says: Jul 10, 2009. 11:37 PM
I didn't notice it doesn't last long, but this one you found is just perfect. 3000 hours is more than what a normal projector lamp last. I would love to see how it works with that lamp. One thing to take into consideration is the temperature, 100w lamp it would be a lot hotter than the 50w. Hope to see the result soon.
mcastles says: Jul 11, 2009. 1:28 AM
I'm guessing it would be twice as hot, at the moment I'm not using any fan. I just put the fan back on after I attach the light..Should be O.k.
newtonn2 (author) says: Jul 10, 2009. 11:49 PM
Hey! I had an idea.... you don't need to buy an expensive transformer, don't you have an old PSU from a computer you don't use any more? like the one I used in this Instructable... http://www.instructables.com/id/DIY_PSU_into_Bench_Power_supply/

The 100w lamp should works fine with anything around 8A on 12V or more, mine is rated 15A at 12v, Technically that should be enuf to run the 100w lamp.
mcastles says: Jul 11, 2009. 1:11 AM
Ya! Thats a great idea! I have 2 of them in my closet, that would probably work. The only thing I don't understand is, in your "PSU" Instructable is how you got it to turn on without a motherboard attached to it? That is a really good idea!!
newtonn2 (author) says: Jul 11, 2009. 6:25 AM
The only thing I've done to get the PSU working without the motherboard is connect the green wire to any black wire, that'll start the PSU, very simple.
Some people use a high power resistor, but I don't really know why.

have a look at this... http://www.wikihow.com/Convert-a-Computer-ATX-Power-Supply-to-a-Lab-Power-Supply
mcastles says: Jul 11, 2009. 8:00 AM
Thats great! This is great information. I think some people put that resister there because their afraid the circuit in the PSU will break because power go's through the green and black wire so it don't over power, but how it can over power I don't know. I think I saw you put a fuse on yours that maybe helps. Thats great newtonn2! You saved me 30 dollars! Now all I need to get is a 12 volt 100 watt bulb. Cool! : )
oli1122 says: Jul 2, 2009. 8:22 AM
newtonn2 (author) says: Jul 2, 2009. 8:25 AM
I'm afraid you can't. you need something between 15v and 18v.
oli1122 says: Jul 10, 2009. 10:19 AM
Then what light source do i need i have tried an 12v 80 led bulb which only projected realy faint and bad quality pictures but i want a 12v power supply

HI! Can you tell me, why is better to use this kind of focal length 85-100mm?
newtonn2 (author) says: Jul 2, 2009. 9:24 AM
it's because you will see a bigger screen. ej 85mm lens will give you a projected screen of about 2m diagonal if you use a 2.5" screen from 4 meter away. if you have a lens 200mm will be about 1m.
chenek2001 says: Jul 2, 2009. 11:01 AM

how big is the final projected image without the screen door effect (2.5" screen) i.e. pixels being really big and being able to see in between tha pixels
newtonn2 (author) says: Jul 2, 2009. 9:29 AM
the screen I used it's not too good, so when i project an image of more than let say.. 0.5meter you start to see all the pixels, but if I project from 4Meter away i get a screen of about 2m diagonal, and from that far you can't almost see the pixels.

mcastles says: Apr 30, 2009. 5:43 PM
Thanks, newtonn2 . I got the LCD today but I could not believe it.. I broke it by just bending it so little that a crack came into place. I ordered another one today same kind I just hope I don't break it again. The projection Lens I got is not so good I found out the picture is to small not worth using, your lens is much better I should have looked around for a right mm size lens like you suggested in your Instructable. So as it is now I am doing O.k with just a magnifying glass lens it seems to project good enough. I should have some pictures of the output and video maybe this Tuesday or Wednesday when the new LCD arrives. I only know now that it dose project, I am now using a 150 watt house light were I get 2640 lumens, I was very surprised about how bright this house light is when I bought it. But with a broken LCD it dose not project well right now. I have to wait and see. Cheers!
newtonn2 (author) says: May 1, 2009. 7:00 AM
I'm sorry the LCD broke. How is the lens? OK i saw the picture of the lens from close and you're right it's not the best one. When looking for another lens, try to find the F number small like 2.8 or smaller, and the focal lens 100 or less in mm that would be 4 or less in inches. I hope we can see your projector working soon.

Hi, sorry for the long wait on this reply. My projector now works very well! I am very happy with the result. I ended up using the projector lens after all, I took it apart and I found 3 lenses. small medium and large. I used the small one and attached it to it. I turned off the lights, and the screen was extremely large with out any discoloration. The small lens from the slide projector lens is very good. I am sorry I don't have any good pictures to show my camera won't pick up the image.
mcastles says: May 5, 2009. 8:32 PM
I also used 2 magnifying glass lenses for the front and back of the LCD, that made it work really well also! Cheers.

WELL DONE! I'm glad you done it. please post some pictures. take pictures of the projector please. And if u want to take pictures of the result output, put the camera on a tripod or on top of something and set the timer, that'll do. Can't wait to see the pictures, thank you for posting.

Ok! I have added new pictures. 3 pictures with output in the dark. and some pictures with information.

That look really good, you've made it. The video never show how really looks, right?, maybe you could set the camera for night shooting, in my camera that did help a lot. Maybe the next project you could do is replacing the light for a High power LED, that would help in at less 4 ways... 1- The box will b a lot smaller. 2- I does consume 20w instead 500w 3- You don need that much cooling so don need the big fan. 4- The color temperature its higher, so the colors are more accurate. I'm just saying this in case you would like to improve it, i'm always thinking about how to improve things. But if you happy with the result... just enjoy it. Many people read Instructables but they never do them. YOU DID IT, and know you have a projector for almost nothing. Keep the good work.
mcastles says: May 7, 2009. 4:53 AM
Thanks newtonn2! I put my camera in night scene setting and you are right it dose take a better picture now. Here's a link: http://www.instructables.com/files/deriv/FMZ/X3TL/FUF36KED/FMZX3TLFUF36KED.MEDIUM.jpg

I may go ahead and buy the same high power LED as you next month, ya it would make the box smaller it would be better, me too I look for ways to improve things too.

Ya, it was fun.

Thanks, If I do end up getting the high powered LED I will leave you
a comment about it so you can see it.

Thanks,

Hi newtonn2, I have some questions about the condenser lens that you got from the BMW headlight. Dose that condenser lens make the output that much better? is it worth getting for my projector. I have been tinkering with my projector but can't get perfect output. Do condenser lens come in all car headlights? I think I might buy one from ebay are they cheap?
newtonn2 (author) says: May 18, 2009. 2:53 PM
Can you tell me what's the problem with the projector? when you say that you can't get a perfect output, what you mean? could you take a picture of the output? The condenser lens helps focusing the light onto the lcd. not all car headlights have them, but if they do, it'll b visible from the outside.
mcastles says: May 18, 2009. 4:28 PM
The problem with the projector is the image on the wall is a little distorted on the sides of the projected video, that is the usual problem. The center of the image it is very good but not along the side of it. Here is a link for the output, I think you can kind of see what I mean: http://www.instructables.com/id/SAEWHN7FU6LRGIU/#

I think I just need to look around for a better condenser lens. At the moment I am using a magnifying glass, it works O.k, I am sort of figuring it out, If I put the magnifying glass lens closer to the LCD I get a very bright image but I get black shadow not covering the projected image/video, the screen image is getting better though. I did some research and found that the condenser lens should be aspherical with round size inside, I have a small aspherical lens from the slide projector lens I took apart but it is too small, but when I use it on the projector then I have black shadow problems also.

I think I just need to look for a better condenser lens, maybe if I am lucky I can get it to work with the magnifying glass, I just need to play around with it more.

newtonn2 (author) says: May 19, 2009. 7:46 AM
Ok that problem is down to the magnified lenses you have. and also you took one internal lens from the slide projector lens, right? The triplet needs 3 of the lenses to get a flat screen output (without round edges). If i were you i would get a flesnel lens just before the LCD. then put the lens you took from the slide projector lens. remove the two magnified glass you have. Then i will see where to put the condenser lens. And if the output is too small, just find a better slide projector lens.
mcastles says: Jun 14, 2009. 4:43 AM
Hey newtonn2,

I just wanted to say I got the Fresnel lens in the mail about a week ago. I tried many different adjustments using my small condenser lens and magnifying glass lenses and such, but no matter what I did using those things I had, I could not get the best output. The frensel Iens I bought cost 25 dollars it was a really good one

So.. Now I am just back to the regular magnifying glass lenses only one on eather sides of the LCD. I got a good picture shot of the output I also now use a smaller box and cut the LCD chamber down a couple inches which resulted in really good output.

http://www.instructables.com/id/SUXVZBFFU6LZRA3/

I bet if I had a condenser lens like yours it would be better, then I might be able to use a high powered led that would make it work as good as yours, if you know where I can get a good inexpensive condenser lens could you drop me a line in my mail?

Thanks for your help, Great Instructable!
mcastles says: May 19, 2009. 10:28 AM
Hmm, thats good. I am going to try your fresnel lens idea. I'm going to buy a good fresnel lens from E-bay. I already have a condenser lens but it might be to small to use, I don't think I can find a good quality condenser lens for cheap, I think it is hard to find for me. Even If I use the internal lens from slide projector it is still flat I think I can use that one internal lens, I think I am safe with that. I wish condenser lens could be easy to find. hopefully the fresnel between the LCD and the condenser part will make it better. Thanks newtonn2! :)

newtonn2 (author) says: Apr 23, 2009. 10:04 AM
I can help you with that...... Use a big one, it's 1000 times better. u can see the different.... The video in the intro page of this instructable is with the 80 Leds, and in the step 2 you can see the output with the 1000 lumens high power LED. And if you can spend a bit more money, i saw some 3000lumens High power LED on ebay, they are a bit expensive at the moment but i'm sure the price will drop soon.

hi there, this is the main problem that i have tried to show in this diagram. The fresnel lens doesn't focus the light in to a small area so not all the light passes through the projector lens.

Can i power the 30w led with a charger from an old hp that is rated 16v with 625ma? Or this isn't going to work because the led uses 15v to 18v and 1800 ma. And if this charger works do i need anything else in between the charger and the led? Also if this charger don't work can i use one with 12v and 1000am? Cumps
newtonn2 (author) says: May 9, 2009. 12:49 AM
Well... i think you answer yourself, if u really want to use the power of this LED, yo have to b looking for a power supply that is between 15v and 18v, and at least 1.5A (1500ma), but if you have another charger which is about 19V or more, there's a way to drop the voltage with a voltage regulator. By the way, how old is the hp? if is a laptop... are u sure it only use 625ma? That's almost nothing for power a laptop, even an old one.
wildmetal says: May 9, 2009. 1:42 AM
Sorry i forgot to say that the hp is a printer :D
But i have seen some laptop charger's on dealextreme that may have the right voltage and amps too, like this one
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.10732
But i think i'm going to order the led and when i have it and try with the chargers i already have, then i will see if i need a better charger.

newtonn2 (author) says: May 9, 2009. 5:55 AM
That's a good idea, but b prepared to have to get another one. I'm sure you can buy a charger a lot cheaper second hand. Here in uk you can get them for like 5 pounds everywhere, even like the one on the link you show me.

newtonn2 (author) says: Jan 8, 2009. 12:48 PM
You're starting to sound like my wife lol, in fact this is the third projector i made. A couple years ago i didn't have any projector, so i was planing to make one, searching on the internet and everywhere how to do it, and them i made my first projector out of an overhead projector and a portable dvd player. And this was the result: A few months later i was given the other Dell Projector. And not long ago i made another one for my sister, this one had a built in tv receiver, usb, and sd card reader, i made this one a bit bigger because the space was not a problem and it was a 400w lamp and get a lot hotter. And as i'm sure you know, the feeling of being able to do something and then see it working it's just to good to miss it. That's why i made this small LED projector.

newtonn2 (author) says: Jan 12, 2009. 10:29 AM
Hi there, The light i used in the bigger projector came from an OHP (overhead projector) this lamp is a low voltage lamp, 36V and it needs a transformer. If you mean by bulb counter, something to tell me how long the bulb lasts, i didn't put anything like that, the digital meter in the pictures is for the temperature. Feel free to ask any other question. I hope i answered what you ask. Thanks for looking.

ok, i saw your instructable b4, didn't know it was you tho. i just rated it. i've seen lots of diy projector, but what i like of yours is that you, like me, did it on the cheap. newtonn2 (author) says: Jan 9, 2009. 12:39 AM
The light i installed in the second projector was not expensive at all (the 400w). I used the light, lens and the fresnels from an overhead projector which cost me about $15 on ebay. The good thing about this light against the one you use in your projector is the color temperature. you will be able to see the colors more natural. The down bit is that this bulb that i'm talking about works with a tranformer which is a bit heavy, but it's worth it after all.

What the size of your lcd? For my projector i really need it. but depending in the size lcd and box you may get away with it. newtonn2 (author) says: Feb 9, 2009. 10:54 AM
Hi there! most probably you could use the lens from the photocopier. What LCD are u using? normally you have to take out anything from the back of the LCD. But be really careful, some LCD (like the one in some mobiles), need some sort of "paper" on the back of the LCD to show the picture (this model normally has the "paper" stick to the LCD with glue or something), if the LCD doesn't need anything to show the picture, everything but the LCD itself will come out really easily. I hope i answered your question, sorry it took so long, i was away.

May I ask what you used to step-down from 15v to 12v?
newtonn2 (author) says: Jan 26, 2009. 7:34 AM
Hi there! I don't step down the voltage. I used a 12V power supply. The High Power LED is rated 13-15V. But it works ok with 12v. In the step 5 I added a couple of schematics, one using a diy LED driver, and the other one without it. Depending on the LED you are planing to use, you could use a power regulater like LM317 for 1A or less, or LM350 for 2.5A or less. Hope I answer your question. If not please let me know.
midevilshadow says: Jan 26, 2009. 9:34 PM
I see, though, is there any downside to supplying only 12v rather then 13-15? Is the only downside less light? Or is there some danger with using a lower voltage (most likely not right?) If so, can the light really be that big of a difference in brightness? I'm asking because I'm having a hard time deciding between the easier route (12V) or the more annoying one (18V, I'd need to find a 18V power supply, and I'm having a very hard time finding a way to step down from 15V to 12V) If I do end up using the LM350, any idea what I can use to step down from 15V to 12V? Thanks a lot for your answers, and awesome mini projector! Hopefully mine can turn out well like yours :-)
newtonn2 (author) says: Jan 27, 2009. 11:17 AM
I tried with both, 15V and 12V, and there was not a big difference on the output (light), That's why i decided to use the 12V option.

I don't really know if the LED can be affected at 12V, but I don't really think it will. To my knowledge LEDs are affected if u supply more voltage, or more current, but not if u supply less voltage or current.

if your power supply is 15V and you use the LM350 as a current regulator, the output will be already around 3V less than the input, so u don't need anything to step down the voltage.

If you're using the LM350 as a voltage regulator you'll need follow this intructable, and instead of using a 5k potentiometer, use the right resistor to get the voltage u require.

Any other question, just ask.

ps. I'm sure u're projector will turn even better than mine.

midevilshadow says: Jan 27, 2009. 12:31 PM
Thanks for the words of encouragement :-). I'm still currently trying to obtain a new 2.5" lcd (I broke the previous one trying to get the anti-glare off :-\) In the case of the brightness, I guess I will use 12V then, since you say it's not much of a difference. It'll save me quite a bit of trouble. One thing though, not that it matters now, but when I said 15V, I already included the 3V in voltage drop, what I meant was 18V input - 3V drop -> 15V for the LED. When I'm done (if I ever finish it), I'll be sure to post a link to it here.

I hope you find a good LCD soon. Probably its possible to use 2 LM350, one for the current and one for the voltage. I'll try that one day as i never done it b4. Hope your project goes well, and we can see some pictures of how it goes.

THISJust a thought. Do you think using the link you could implement A/V input. It would be sweet to play some console games on there. (I know its not the best but NES on the wall ftw)

Hi there. If u have the Casio Tv-880, have a look at this manual I think this unit comes with A/V imput, so u can connect it to any console game with the proper adaptor.

Sorry, I've been really busy, but right know I'll be posting more pictures and explanations of how to do it. I don't know how to write English, that's why it takes me so long.
