Ok, the first thing to do, is to take the Mp4 apart. and carefully separate the LCD from the circuit.

Then you have to separate the LCD from its casing and remove the backlight. But keep the casing once it's empty of everything but the LCD itself. ( I didn't take many pictures from the process so i took the pictures now when everything is fitted, but if u don't understand, or i don't explain it properly just make a comment and i'll answer asap)

Now you have to cut a piece of anything rigid where the lcd is goin to be, so its straight. I'll make a drawing.

I think that this is a result of how the LCD unit works - they have a polarising filter - so unfortunately around 50% of the light tends to be lost even when the lcd is displaying a "white screen". I don't know if using a polarised light source instead of a polarising screen would improve efficiency - but I don't think I know of any handy polarised light sources - let alone white ones. There ARE ways around it - using exotic optics to reflect the polarised light that would normally be blocked, optically twist it though 90 degrees and then bang it back again. Fancy stuff aside, the reality is sadly, 50% of your light source is immediately turned into heat - unless you pre-polarise and feed two separate screens and try to re-combine the output (and arrange to drive one with a video source rotated 90 degrees. with this fab little design though, excellent results from modest power consumption means you could even risk splashing out for a 50w LED. They dio make a 100w now by the way..... :)

100W LED is a bit pricey for me though. and i saw some 1W to 3W LEDs on ebay. I would like to know if i could put them together to make a nice and neat light source? (Shapes of those LEDs are so awkward..)

I also notice that you have a few meters of throw distance. But for me there's only less than two meters space in my room. Would a 10W be enough? Or is it better to have a brighter led whatever distance I have?

by the way, a question on the high power led drive. since the one demonstrated in the instructable provided here is for 1W - 3W LED. Do I have to adjust the values of the components so as to feed the 30W LED?

I was thinking about the polarizing lens part on my 2.5 inch LCD, I wondered the same thing you were thinking that I would get light to pass through better by taking it off the LCD with a thin knife. I did just that, then I installed it back on my projector and found out the LCD is useless now..lol . The LCD needs the polarizing lens so the image somehow gets projected on the display it self. Well..now we know. : )..lol

Well so long as you haven't thrown it away or caused other damage when removing the polarizing filter from the back, either just put it back on - or use another bit of polarising film to replace it. I might be wrong but I think you can "de-useless-ise" you lcd panel as simply as popping a filter back in again :

Yea, I'm going to have to buy a new one, its O.K the LCD had some discoloration problems before I even took the polarization film off. I was going to buy a new one anyway. Can't really put it back on I tried, when I used a knife to take it off it kind of damaged the film. It's all good. :)

Also the polarization film split and bit and pieces came off, though I could put it back on the LCD it would work again if my polarization film was in good condition had I been more careful taking it off.
