I posted a video here with a daylight test of the projector. Also i posted a few pictures, some of the portable battery unit i made for it, so I can project anywhere and some pictures of the new High Power LED i got today from Hong Kong, this one is rated 1800lm and i will be making another projector with it, this time with a 3.5" LCD, a bit bigger but a lot more pixels so hopefully the quality will be better. I will keep you all posted. Thank you for rate an comments.

My second LED projector is finished! You can see here.

Hey I think I've got everything i need for my projector! I was just wondering if this light would be bright enough to project over about 8-feet?http://www.amazon.com/NEEWER%C2%AE-CN-160-DIMMABLE-Camcorder-Panasonic/dp/B004VC8M3K/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1345919046&sr=8-2&keywords=high+power+led

hey newtonn2 i hav got everything needed but i hav searched everywhere i cannot find a 10w or 20w i got a 3 watt led but because of wrong voltage input it is now not working now so i hav only a 1 watt led .....is it enough.........and one more thing i cannot convince my dad to by another 3 watt so say anything except that.............................waitin for ur reply soon
newtonn2 (author) in reply to MostBrainyJan 12, 2012. 9:37 AM

Hi!, I don't think you can use a 3w or 1w LED. To get the screen bright enuf you need something more powerful. I'm sorry you can't get the right LED.
qwerty156 in reply to MostBrainyOct 24, 2011. 9:58 PM
You can use a cheapy halogen light

Great job! I'm a little scared about all the electricity involved, but I can't wait to try it!
Question: would using 2 of the high powered leds double the lumens and would you foresee any problems with doing that?
Thanks!

I came across your DIY after I posted I my Instructables (http://www.instructables.com/id/Powerful-video-light-under-100/). I bought similar 20W LED from DealExtreme (http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.5848) for my video light project. Just letting everyone know where to buy the 20W LED. Make sure you have a heatsink when testing this LED, it gets hot within 4 seconds.

hey man!!!i am from hong kong!!!!!! you are awesome!!!!!! by the way,i am doing a project about this too!!!!! could you tell me where u buy the led and the mp4? may be tell me the name of the mp4 or the home page ok? thank you very very much!!!!!!!!!
newtonn2 (author) in reply to savagenightSep 15, 2009. 2:04 PM
Hi there! Thank you very much! I'm happy that my instructable is helpful for you. The LED i bought from Hong Kong, on ebay, so it'll be easy for you to find i guess. But the mp4 is an old model from overtech, they used to have it in they web page, but not any more. there is a picture of it in my Instructable, it's all what i have, sorry i can't help you, but the mp4 was given to my as faulty and i fixed it, so i don't have any manual or anything. I would love to see you projector when you finish.

hello negwtonn2 great work man !!..
i am thinking doing this project,, but! i am too new with this :)
can you tell me the links on eBay were you bought the LED, the lens and so on ?
thank you!!!
newtonn2 (author) in reply to dnelaaDec 2, 2009. 10:59 PM
 The LED

The lens came from a slide projector.
And the LCD came from a mp4 player.

dnelaa in reply to newtonn2Dec 13, 2009. 7:22 AM
newtonn2 what do you think of this led and ac driver? :  led+driver
how hot that will be and with what kind of cooler i need to add to it..?
also i don't understand why i need a driver..can i just get dc power that fits and that will do ..?

newtonn2 (author) in reply to dnelaaDec 13, 2009. 2:58 PM
That led looks really good. I never use a LED that powerful so I'm not sure about the heat sink you will need, but I think it will be enuf a P4 heat sink, I would even use the fan just to make sure.

The driver control de flow of electricity as well as the voltage which it will make the LED last longer. In my projector I did not use the driver, I just got a power supply with the right voltage and amps for the LED and so far so good.

dnelaa in reply to newtonn2Dec 14, 2009. 7:37 PM
Thank you newtonn2 for your opinion about the Led - thinking about buying this led and the 3.5# monitor.
take a look at this sketch i made - the tablet  stands in  A4 paper size (standard printing paper) - do you think the parts will stand , i mean the distance between the lens, the mirror, ext ...is  it  ok? do you think i should drop the mirror and just do it straight  .
correct me if i am wrong - Thank you very much for your help!

newtonn2 (author) in reply to dnelaaDec 15, 2009. 7:17 AM
Every thing is looking really good! I think the distances are right, maybe the fresnel a bit closer to the LCD, but it will be better if you try everything b4 getting the enclosure. If you're using a LED you don't need the templated glass, as is only use the reduce the heat when using halogen or metal halide lamps.

About the mirror, if you can fit it it will allow you to get the lens closer to the enclosure. I thing you should be able to make it even in an smaller enclosure as an A4 seams a bit big for me. In any case once you have everything, give a try and you'll see how big or small the enclosure need to be.
dnelaa in reply to newtonn2Dec 16, 2009. 7:21 AM
dnelaa says: newtonn2 the templated glass is just to be sure.. i mean i dont know how hot the led will be that might damge the lcd.

but if  you say no need than what do you think the distance should be between the led to the the fresnel lens  ..?

BTW how hot do think your 20W led is about without the heat sink -?

something else about your project here.. i pay attention that the Projection screen corners are slightly rounded and not squared as your other project that you made using an OHP.. is it the projector lens or do i miss something ?
THANK YOU so much - you're great help !

newtonn2 (author) in reply to dnelaaDec 16, 2009. 8:33 AM

If you have already the templated glass you can use it. The LED will get really hot without the heat sink, I would not use it without it. What I would do is try with a heat sink for the LED and with no templated glass (as the templated glass will affect the brightness of the projector), If there is not more than 30 C in the LED, I would not be worry about the temperature.

The round borders in my LED projectors are down to not have enough space to separate the LED from the LCD. I made everything b4 replacing the 80 small LED's for the 20w high power LED and I did wanted to keep it small.

dnelaa in reply to newtonn2Dec 3, 2009. 2:13 PM
i see ..ok.
what about the led , the lamp ext .. any links to eBay ?
another question if i may ask, is your mp4 support IN video composite..?
most of the simple mp4 goes only with flash memory and not with in video  composite.
newtonn2 (author) in reply to dnelaaDec 4, 2009. 12:02 AM
I did put a link to and ebay. Click on LED, that's a link.
About the rest of your questions, everything is on my instructable.

The Mp4 player support video composite in. There are not many with that feature, it was build to be able to record to the internal memory from the composite.  Sadly the mp4 I used is not longer available. But if you look in the comments I did find one, and it was from HK I think. See this one.

hi  again newtonn2 - thanks so much for the info.!
i think i would go for 3.5 inch lcd video monitor it has video in too hop that will work.
btw .. i just looked around for led and i found a led with - 50w white 4000 lumen. - for 25$.is it possible? and does it realy give this effect?
here the link :

newtonn2 (author) in reply to dnelaaDec 7, 2009. 2:10 AM
The LED would be superb! it would be a lot more powerful than the one I used.
dnelaa in reply to newtonn2Dec 7, 2009. 7:41 AM
ok i take your advice for the lcd !  thank you :)
about the led..well the led itself as you see cost like 25$ but when you buy together with the LED driver -is another story..(130$) any idea how to get a dc power that fits that kind of  led..don't tell me to build one  - NO WAY ..lol

newtonn2 (author) in reply to dnelaaDec 7, 2009. 2:07 AM
That would do the job, but if I where you I would get this one  Is double the quality of the one you showed me.
savagenight in reply to newtonn2Sep 18, 2009. 10:17 AM
i bought the led and heat sink today!cost about $120HKD. it look like yours, but i dont know it is 10w or 20w,the sales just know it is 12v. also i broke a mp4 today.....as it do not have any screw on it.....i use a knife try to open it,and then the lcd broken .....so sad..
newtonn2 (author) in reply to savagenightSep 19, 2009. 4:28 AM
Hi there!, why don't you show me a picture, I may be able to tell you if is a 10w or 20w. I'm so sorry you broke your mp4, normally there are screws, what model of mp4 are you using?
savagenight in reply to newtonn2Sep 19, 2009. 7:40 AM
hello,i have got this materials so far,
a led, a heat sink with fans, a broken lcd mp4,two unknown focal length lens( a convex lens & fresnel lens)
and im planning to buy another mp4 as follow,1.8" 160x128,
do u think its work?
please give me some comments and suggestions,
thanks a lot=]

why don't u buy an ipod touch 2nd gen?
newtonn2 (author) in reply to savagenightSep 19, 2009. 7:45 AM
Everything is looking ok but the new mp4 player you're looking to buy, it doesn't have enuf pixels, the quality of the screen would be really bad!
savagenight in reply to newtonn2Sep 20, 2009. 9:31 AM
do u know my led look like is 10w or 20w?
newtonn2 (author) in reply to savagenightSep 20, 2009. 4:14 PM
I need a better picture, anyway, i think if it has 9 chips inside it would b a 10w led and if it has 16 chips is a 20w led.
ngaiki in reply to newtonn2Sep 21, 2009. 8:21 AM
hi savagenight i'm from hk too,
so did you buy that LED from shen shui po?
i saw that too in one of the stores there.
but i found it really expensive. i guess it should be a 20W for that price. (another assumption is that it works between 12V to 14V with 1.X A. then that should add up with a rated power of at least 20W ) . you'd better ask for the maximum current allowed. that's crucial. it'll drive you crazy if your driver burns the expensive LED. though you'll be able to save part of those chips inside if you act quick enough.
i went to shenzhen with my friend an bought a 20W LED for just RMB$90 with the condenser lens. but if you go there make sure you got lots of stuffs in your shopping list to balance the transportation fee to shenzhen.
yet i bought a brighter 30W from ebay and it costs me around HK$280. i've finished the whole driver for my player, led and the fan and pack them in a PCB. and that works well too. and i'm waiting for the projection lens from the US. hope it arrives soon so i can start the installation. here's the picture of my driver set and the after-connection. and again thanks for newtonn2's instructable and his inspiration. cheers =]

Hi there! your driver looks really good, did you make it?
savagenight in reply to ngaikiSep 21, 2009. 11:26 AM
hi ngaiki!
i did really buy it from shen shui po,haha
it cost HKD$99 each, it has 9 chips inside, and they just told me work at 12v,
thanks for your advice,i will go ask them again.
besides, could you teach me how you make the circuit ?(it would be great if you also know how to make it work with rechargeable battery too)
on the other hand, what mp4 are you using?
infact, i want to make the projector size as small as it can, but its hard to find a mp4 lcd which is under 2" with not bad resolution.
thank you very very much for your reply and teaching,(specially with those photos).
also, thanks for newtonn2's instructable. =]
ngaiki in reply to savagenightSep 23, 2009. 10:29 PM
yea then i think newtonn2 is right, it should be a 10W led, sorry.
the mp4 i'm using was the 4.3" 'ainol'. it's expensive but it got whole lot more pixels then an ordinary 4.3". i don't know if the whole picture could pass through the projection lens but i'm just trying to make it happen. if that doens't work i'm gonna buy a 2.5" to 3" one. i guess 1.8" will not produce a satisfactory result. (unless u really enjoy the 'pixels' =p) i assure u that a 3 inch screen won't be too big. btw why do you wanna use rechargeable batteries?
savagenight in reply to ngaikiSep 25, 2009. 3:12 AM
because my project require me to make a portable projector....
ngaiki in reply to savagenightSep 25, 2009. 6:11 AM
i don't know if the batteries could stand that long. the LED, fan and portable media player will take up quite an amount of energy from the batteries..anyways i think you still need a magnifying glass as the projection lens. but i guess the quality won't be as sharp as using a triplet. if that's a school project, you could simply save your money for a normal magnifying glass and you should check the focal length before you buy it. make sure it fits your fresnel lens. =]
just a suggestions, search for more on the net =p
savagenight in reply to ngaikiSep 26, 2009. 7:25 AM
thanks for remind me finding a trpilet projection lens,do u know where can i buy one in hk? really thanks so much!!!!ngsiki

Hi Guys, Impressive. I just want to start building my project as well. I want to know where i can find the projection lens that cheap. Pardon my ignorance, Just wondering if we can use a zoom lens for one off the SLR photo cameras that i have .. It is probably designed to Zoom In rather than Zoom out. Thanks
