Make a wood "tobacco" pipe the easy way

Step 11: Torch it.

Go outside with your torch and blacken the entire surface on a very low flame using a slow sweeping motion. Don't actually start to burn the wood. This step should be done very lightly.

is this step necessary or can we leave it plain color?

I really don't think this is necessary. I'm fairly sure it's just to help make the pipe harder/ more fire resistant.
