Introduction: How to Make an American Style Koozie Stubby Holder

About: We like to make fun little projects, mostly out of neoprene and foam. Sometimes with LEDs and Batteries, some times with motors! Who knows what will come out of the Coolaz Factory next.

This guide will show you how you can make your very own American style stubby holder. In the USA, the most common kind of stubby holder is referred to as a "koozie". They are typically made from neoprene or foam and collapse to fit in your pocket easily.
We will show you how to can easily make one at home using your domestic sewing machine!

Step 1: What You Need

To make your American style stubby holder you will need:

  • Neoprene or Foam Pad - Foam is easier on your domestic machine.
  • Sewing Machine and thread.
  • Design Transfer paper - Available at officeworks and similar stores.
  • Iron.

That's it - soon you will have your own koozie!

Step 2: Print Your Design

Following the instructions on your design transfer paper, find a design you like and print it out from your computer. You can easily find an image on google or even come up with one yourself if you are a snazzy designer!

It's not necessary to print it on a template or in a certain shape really, but a rectangle the size of your foam or neoprene will work best for our application.

This is the design we will print onto our stubby holder.

Step 3: Apply Your Design

You will now apply your design to the neoprene or foam pad you have. Our transfer paper is applied by rubbing an Iron over the top of the paper onto the pad. The heat from the iron transfers the design from the paper onto the pad.

With the paper we used, it is important to get the iron SUPER hot and apply plenty of pressure.
You can see the design has now transfered onto the soon to be stubby holder!

Again, check with your transfer paper for appropriate instructions.

Step 4: Fold Your Stubby Holder in Half

You are now going to prepare your stubby holder for sewing! Fold it in half, so that the INTERIOR is showing. We will be sewing it inside out then folding it out the correct way after the stitch has been applied.

Step 5: Set Your Sewing Machine Settings

You will want to use a straight stitch, with each stitch nice and close together. This helps to give you a better finish once we fold our American Style stubby holder out the right way.

Step 6: Sew One Side of Your Stubby Holder.

Place your stubby holder in the sewing machine so that approximately 2mm are on the right hand side of the needle. This gives us a nice edge and will ensure your cans and bottles fit in your koozie!

With two hands on the stubby holder slowly begin to stitch down the side, ensure that at both the top and the bottom you do a little "reverse" stitch to hold it all together.

Step 7: Flip Your Stubby and Sew the Next Edge

Now, you want to turn your stubby over and proceed to do the same thing again down the un-sewn side. Ensure you do the reverse stitch to lock it at each end.

Step 8: Fold Your Koozie Style Stubby Holder Out the Right Way

Just like you would a sock, turn your stubby holder out the right way to reveal your design!
