Now we've done the shopping we can get started making the actual thing.
Take 1 IR LED and insert it on digital pin 13, making sure the cathode of it goes
to GND next door to pin 13.

Mine only works when I do the reverse, i.e. connect the cathode (negative lead, the larger plate inside the LED) to pin 13 and the anode to gnd. This is with the Radioshack emitter/detector pair (276-142). Also, on my emitter LED the flat side is the anode (the smaller plate).

Well, if that configuration works for you, thats fine. Whether it's because of the different suppliers. :)
