Now that you have finished it, upload the demo sketch called 'Blink' and hopefully the LED on the breadboard should be blinking. If it is................congratulations, if not go to troubleshooting.
The optimal range is about 1 inch and less (<2.5 cm) To boost this put in a transistor and more IR LED's together.

Troubleshooting
1. Q = No blinky blink A = Make sure the IR emitter and detector are close enough together
2. Q = No blink even when I did the above A = Did you follow my instructions correctly, if not, go to step 1.
