Auto (general picture taking), Macro(Close-up) and Film.
Auto: the most useful option, you can use this for most pictures, however more experienced photographers may be more inclined to use on of the special modes such as portrait or landscape etc.
Macro: The second most useful picture taking function and probably the most important for Instructables, used for taking extreme close-ups, ideal for pictures of mechanisms or wiring.
Film: most modern digital cameras have a film function, however there are not that great and if you plan to do a lot of filming it is better to get a camcorder.
Over time you will get used to your cameras functions and little quirks.
