Measure the speed of light? Ive never heard of that with an oscilloscope. An oscilloscope just turns sound into waveforms displayed on a screen so the human eye can "see" what sound looks like

i'm assuming it can't since this oscilloscope isn't "calibrated", but i was told you can measure the speed of light...LED beam goes to a beam splitter, one half of the beam goes to a PIN photodiode which is connected to the oscilloscope, the other half bounces off a mirror, the beam continues it's path through a focus lens and then into a 2nd photo diode which is also connected to the oscilloscope, it's in this link: http://dept.physics.upenn.edu/~uglabs/lab_manual/speedOfLight.pdf
i was thinking of doing something like that for my high school science project, but i can't afford an oscilloscope, nor can my school. i thought of renting one, but it's still several hundred dollars, money that i dont have

wellin that case it seems like a probable experiment. and since you dont have the money just build this! this oscilloscope is built on the same properties of any other oscilloscope ever built (exept for software oscilloscopes) And im asuming that would work. Even if the light project doesnt work you can still do the project on the oscilloscope itself!

ummm... what kind of speakers are you using? if you are using self-amplified speakers thenthe only way i know of is to put a larger transformer in. But that is risky and sometimes doesn't work. so maybe messing around with the tone if your speakers have a tone knob. And im always happy to help people when i can, Thanks for the inquiring comments! There aren't meny people who want to get into real conversasions anymore. Exept on instructables, because the instructables community are people i can relate to.

Yes infact there is a answer that i actally know! I might of listed the improper wires for vertical or horizontal in the instructable. But you preferably should use the horizontal wires for the speaker and the vertical wires for the computer an visual signal. that way you can just tip your monitor sideways and it will be horizontal. like in mine in the pictures. (if that doesnt work than your monitor might be a little to new or possibly old.) Can i see a picture?

Hmm.... That doesn't make sense. Usually the mp3 sends a signal and the amplifier amplifies it so it is loud enough to hear. Otherwise the mp3 does not recieve any power from the speakers unless it's a dock. So maybe something went wrong with the mp3. (correct me if i'm wrong.) The radio seems like a cool idea but then you would only be able to show the radio music and commercials unless you had your own radio transmitter, Which aren't really that hard to find or build anyway. It just seems like unless you had a transmitter you would'nt be able to plug in your own sounds like waveforms for exerimenting with. But it's a great idea.

ohhh! I finally see what you did yea the speakers will give amplification of sound to the deflector coils. no extrernal power needed.ya when you fired up the crt and got it running it probably sent a charge through the speakers and into the mp3 player via audio cable. so yes dont connect the speaker wires to the wires cut that are attached to the circuit board, use the wires that go directly into the coils. i will fix that in the ible. sorry about your mp3 though. is it repairable?
So, the 2 X or Y wires comming from the CRT is what i connect to the + and - of the speaker?

yes, but polarity doesn't matter. example: as long as you are using the wires that belong to the x axis coil then you can connect either wire to either speaker terminal. the polarity doesnt matter. Just make sure the wires you use from the crt belong to the same group, x or y. And the entire comment above also applies to the y axis wires, depending on which you choose. But yes, the 2 x or y wires from the crt do connect to the + and - of the speaker. Thanks for the inquiring comment!

Ok i did it, but while disconnected, the light blinks in brightness, is that normal?

I figured that for some reason, if i disconnect the cables to make a left-to-right line(forgot weather that is vertical or horizontal XD) it would do that, if i did it with the other ones and reconnect it, It works, But makes a up-to-down line...
I did it to another CRT too, and the same thing happened.

I just tested the video and it does not work. It saves as a .tmp file and renaming it does no good. Also, it is only 34KB, which is far to small to be a movie.

ah, poop! It didnt upload as a normal vid because ith was 10.4 megabytes and instructables can only upload 10.3 megabytes at a given time. so i hacked it with movie maker to be smaller but it only saved as the tmp. file.... Oh well, I uploaded a new one that works anyway.

nice instructable, never crossed me that you could just hook the monitor up to a computer to stop it from sleeping and this makes it so you could color it just by opening up a paint window and filling the screen with a color (hopefully the monitor is attached to a labtop) i couldent get the video to work it just opened a wmm window. i think that the wmm project file dosent save the actual videos (just there location and arrangement) im surprised how poorly those computer speakers are working for amplifying it deefffinnatly need some more amplification (obvious i know)

thanks!, but yea i never thought that by uploading different colored backgrounds i could change it! i'll probabaly leave it purple though (i like purple.) Thats to bad the vid didnt upload right... well i'll try to make a smaller one so it will fit on instructables. And your right abot amplification. But when you turn it up its okay but still needs more.
