OK this is only the first bit but the full project will be on a power point for you to download this week so please dont be leaving comments saying this instructable is rubbish or saying there is no information on it. it takes a few hours to make the game and even longer for me to explain it. i will try to finish it as soon as possible.

THE NEXT STEP WILL SHOW YOU HOW TO MAKE A VERY SIMPLE GAME.''

Hey. Amazing tutorial, easiest I've seen. Gonna make a game soon, but, I wanna know if there's a way to make a sprite (like a character) jump, move, duck and stuff. I'm kinda making a game like the old Sonic the Hedgehof games. But is there a way to make a character jump up onto objects and such? Like bouncing off a spring or jumping up steps? And is there a way to create cutscenes or make people talk with each other? Or is that too complex for this game maker?
Prof. Pickle in reply to IceDragon13Nov 27, 2012. 11:38 PM
You're probably better doing that in flash, but you can do it in GameMaker. Set an event, if key is pressed, make character change image. So if the up key is pressed your character changes image into his "jump pose". You can set the gravity, and at collision with the floor object, he changes back. Same thing for everything else.
Tech_Master in reply to IceDragon13Apr 21, 2012. 11:40 AM
Yes there is o know this is an older comment but if you haven't figured out you just make the sprites and animation then use variables to set the main sprite change to the crouch and then have its own set of instructions that's what i did with my street fighter game.

YellowBlu Co. says: Feb 27, 2012. 9:57 PM
This was an amazingly easy tutorial. My cousin and I made a bucket list where you get 10 points for every time you finish a task. Our goal is to get at least 100 points by the end of the year and finish the list as soon as possible. Making a computer game was on the list, but I realized, considering our age (12 and 13), it's almost impossible. You proved it anything is possible when I began to doubt. Although the game is super simple, I'm proud of gaining experience at such a young age. I appreciate you posting a tutorial on this. The only tutorial I found, it's so thorough, even a baby can do it.

Hey my friends and I are going to make a game that's like a MMO except one player... I don't know how else to describe it other than like Poke'mon. Except really different. Could you please email me via ebag123@gmail.com on this? Thanks.

right now im making a game somewhat like pokemon using a program called Scratch (scratch.mit.edu) very easy, made for kids (like me, lol :P) by MIT (Masechusets, er however u spell it Intstitute of Technlogy or something :) ) very fun and easy.

dungeon runner in reply to Ebag123May 2, 2010. 2:01 PM
You could use Adventure Game Studio (AGS). It requires learning a scripting language, but if you really want to make games you should be doing that anyways. It's really easy to learn.

dungeon runner in reply to gernigMay 2, 2010. 2:07 PM
Maybe he meant a sandbox type game. That might be considered "an MMO only single-player". Or maybe he just didn't know what an RPG was. Learn yourself some politeness (and perhaps some punctuation).

I have Game Maker 7, but I'm sure this is similar. There should be a button on the toolbar which caption reads something to the effect of 'export to executable.' Before you do that, though, double-click on global game settings, and change the settings to anything you want. You can even change the Icon!

Simple fix for the installer: It was downloaded as a .tmp file. Change it to .exe
N1CK4ND0 in reply to alextricityApr 18, 2009. 12:41 PM
actually, it is saved as .exe.tmp the ".tmp" part just means that it will be deleted after a certain ammount of non-use, does not interfere with the how the file is executed

AlternateLives in reply to acoffeeJun 23, 2009. 6:59 AM
The right program for game design (at least seen here) can be found at http://www.yoyogames.com/gamemaker/try. for visual tools, any photo-editing program should work. for audio, I recommend Audacity, a free audio-editing software. it can be found at http://audacity.sourceforge.net/. Also, I know where you're coming from, as I drew up game designs in my notebooks at school. Maybe I should study more...

Simple games can be made without programming, and the more advanced ones are programmed with Python (also open source). A free-as-in-air 3d game solution!

what are the paths, scripts, fonts, and timeline folders for? what exactly do they do?
lieuwe in reply to tron1o7Aug 18, 2008. 2:59 AM
paths:a list off points, there is an action to set an path for the current instance, this means the object will follow the list of points scripts:they behave a lot like functions in c++, but you should read on GML before you use these fonts:there is a set font action, this sets the font for the draw text action, timeliness:you can create a list of events with these, can be used for almost anything
dean-101 (author) in reply to tron1o7Apr 29, 2008. 2:07 PM
They are add codes, object paths and i am not sure about time lines. fonts just add new fonts for text in the game Paths let you draw lines then in the objects box u can make an object follow that path e.g move in a circle.

also how can you program an object to move by using the arrow keys?

ok, follow my instructable until where it says add event. instead of selecting "create" chose "key press" then click on the key u want to make the object move left. then in the next box drag the movement command in and only click the left arrow and set the speed. that is all, just do it with each arrow key and each direction. Hope this helps. P.S just mess around with the commands and change things, that is how i found out how to make games.

I used to use gamemaker. It was a pretty good way to get started, but it doesn't run everything as fast as it should be able to, and I am now trying to learn C++.
lieuwe in reply to CerafemAug 18, 2008. 2:54 AM
thats because its an interpreted language, that means your code is first read by a program(the 'runner'). which then executes it, which is ofcourse slower than converting it to machine code
superlox3 says: Jul 18, 2008. 2:52 PM
It's a good starting point, but you can't call this a "real" game. Real games mean hard coding, learning languages. If you want to make real games, then you should learn a language like C# or C++.
lieuwe in reply to superlox3Aug 18, 2008. 2:51 AM
you might have noticed, but gamemaker HAS a very powerful language:GML. you can even use dlls to extend gml. you really should visit gmc.yoyogames.com, thats the official forum

Thank you.
TheBestJohn in reply to legsmacgeeAug 5, 2008. 2:01 PM
I agree with the statement that you should learn a programming language and make an original game engine with some original facets to the game. However this is a "real" game. Not everything that you learn while making some of these is useless. It seems like a good tool to learn about collisions and such. I don't think if you make a game with this you should earn the right to call yourself a game developer however it is a good way to get your feet wet. I started learning about the game process using the Warcraft III editor. Which by the way is awesome to learn about triggers, cutscenes, actions and a lot of if, then values. If you really want to get into game development look up Garage games. It is excellent for those who want to make online games as it uses a local/host setup. They have learning suites that take you through the steps of creating a good 3D game as well as a 2D version. Good Luck
legsmacgee says: Jul 16, 2008. 7:18 PM
This program seems horrible. Come on people, if you're going to take the time to make a game, you might as well make a decent one with a legitimate programming language. A very simple one for 3d games is Dark Basic. I'm not into game creation, but I use a lot of java. Learn a language, its worth it. Unless you want to make cookie cutter crap, LEARN A LANGUAGE!
lieuwe in reply to legsmacgeeAug 18, 2008. 2:49 AM
!!! not nice, I use gamemaker for years now, and you probably never ever tryd gml-script, or use dlls, or extensions!, gamemaker is a very powerful language, try some frontpage games on yoyogames.com(official gamemaker site), the games on that site are ALL made with gamemaker, try http://www.yoyogames.com/games/show/4951 for example, it's a great game,I have spend 6 hours playing that game. every day. for a week!!!

legsmacgee in reply to davidturner666Aug 1, 2008. 8:30 PM
What constitutes a programming language in your mind?
davidturner666 in reply to legsmacgeeAug 1, 2008. 9:17 PM
C++, vb, vb.net, python, html, php, javascript nqc
budsiskos in reply to davidturner666Aug 8, 2008. 7:41 PM
are there any good online classes that will teach some of those languages?
davidturner666 in reply to budsiskosAug 11, 2008. 4:34 PM
i would advise getting a book from a library - they normally are better to start learning with. If you wanted - i could do an instructable on a language. or a google search would work just as well
budsiskos in reply to davidturner666Aug 11, 2008. 4:50 PM
an instructable would be great. im sure im not the only one here who wants to learn

Hey, im trying to make one were i have a sprite shoot a dot down the level and collide with another sprite then explode. having a little trouble on how i make the dot come out of the initial sprite and the exploding collision. Please help, would be grateful.
dean-101 (author) in reply to messblackMay 7, 2008. 2:02 PM
Also for the exploading part you need to have the full version but you could also use another sprite that is an explosion and (read comment below first) then add an event on the sprite that will expload called "collision" and chose bullet then in the actions box drag a command in called "destroy" (it looks like the windows recycle bin icon) and then add another command called "create instance" and chose the explosion. That should work just mess around with the setting until you get it perfect or the way you want it.
dean-101 (author) in reply to messblackMay 7, 2008. 1:58 PM
hey, to make a sprite create an object at its current position you need to use a commmand called "create an instance" (it is a small yellow bulb). So to make a bullet that will move forward you need to creat two objects, 1.the sprite you will be 2.the bullet For the sprite you are you will need to add all the commands such as move left and right(if you do not know how let me know and i will tell you) next click add event and chose "pressed button" and chose the button you want to use. now in the action menu drag the create instance command in (yellow bulb) and when the new box opens chose the sprite you want to appear and then tick the RELATIVE box. Now that means that the bullet will appear where your sprite is when you press the button you chose . Now to make the bullet move you need to edit the bullet object. add an event called CREATE and in the actions box add the direction command and chose the direction and speed you want the bullet to travel at and press ok. And that is it. now when you press for example SPACE BAR the bullet will appear and then move in the direction you chose.
messblack in reply to dean-101May 8, 2008. 12:36 PM
Ok, i thought i had the left and right thing down, but for some reason i can't get my sprite to appear on the screen. (i'm probably doing somethnig wrong) But yea, any help with the left - right, up - down movement thing would be Helpful. Thanks :)

I have to disagree with the comment of code being "confusing". I find it to be very logical - in fact, "logic" is a common synonym to computer code, because it follows logical statements. The tutorial is nice for those who don't wish to do anything serious, but to a really avid gamer who wants to make professional quality games, you need to learn how to program. I hope some other programmers out there can help dispel the misconception that computer programming is confusing or overly complex. There may be a tough learning curve, but once you get the hang of you, you can not only do much more, but will find it much more stimulating and rewarding.

Hi, i've been using GM for over 4 years now, it is a very simple program and very easy to use but the key to making a good game is to make it very simple so that everything works and as you learn more, improve it. It is possible to make 3D games and even some that you have to use 3D glasses for. "ladiesman247says: im 12 yrs old... so do you think i would be able to do this????? it loox complicatd" It needs a bit of thought but i've seen 9 yr olds make decent games using this software

dean-101 (author) in reply to dean-101Mar 26, 2008. 11:00 AM
if you are understanding the basic of this game maker 6.1 then you could set the score to 0 on each level(room) and when you get an item make it add 10 points then use the command that says "when score is" you type (type this for say 3 items that you need to complete the level) =30 this then lets you chose what to do when the score is equal to 30 for example move to next room then you select your room. i will put this on the instructable
NeonLime in reply to dean-101Mar 26, 2008. 11:01 AM
Oh :P I Think i Understand It Better
dean-101 (author) in reply to NeonLimeMar 26, 2008. 11:36 AM

GREAT great intructable, its not hard to understand at all. with this you can easily figure out how you make other things and make your own game. cred to you. thanks alot.. only one question, when u input "relative" what does that do, what happens if its not relative?
dean-101 (author) in reply to RoxnerMar 24, 2008. 2:14 PM
it just adds to the score that is already set eg. +10 relative to a score that is 0 will make the score 10 if it was not at relative the score would stay at 10 even if you made the score command happen twice. but if it happens twice on relative it will add the numbers up. sorry but it is hard to explain
Roxner in reply to dean-101Mar 24, 2008. 2:44 PM
i figured that out myself when i was editing the speed. thanks alot ! great instructable
Sergeant Crayon in reply to RoxnerMar 24, 2008. 10:06 AM
Relative to the previous integer.
(If the integer was 20, a relative +10 would make it 30)
(If the integer was 20, a regular +10 would make it 10)
