Introduction: How to Make Wooden Feathers
Painted wooden feathers made of pine. You can make them any size, but these are approximately 10" x 3" x .75". I made these at TechShop San Francisco (www.techshop.ws). These are great for using up scrap wood.
Step 1: Cut Your Wood
Cut your wood into the approximate length of the feathers you'd like to make. I used a chop saw, but you can also use a bandsaw, table saw, jigsaw or whatever you like.
Step 2: Rough Out the Shape
Cut out the general shape on a bandsaw. I did these freehand but you can draw out the shape with pencil if you'd like.
Step 3: Refine the Shape
If you'd like finer cuts, you can use a scroll saw.
Step 4: Sand It Down
Sand down the edges. I used a belt sander, but you can also do it by hand.
Step 5: Carve Out More Detail
I then used a wood carving knife to carve out more detail (the "veins" or whatever you call them)
Step 6: Paint
Paint them. I used acrylic paints, but you can used whatever you'd like. I started painting the veins first, then adding bits of color. You're done! To see what I've done with them, look for my upcoming instructable on how to make a big dreamcatcher.
