If you try to force your cat to play with you, accept scratching or rubbing when they do not want, or put them in aggravating situations, expect the unexpected.

If you find that your cat ever hisses at you, back away. Do not try to be the bigger being in this fight (Though you are). You do not want to break bonds with your cat that you have so painstakingly made.

If your cat wraps itself around your arm and begins clawing and chewing on it, do not fling him into oblivion. Whether it be playfully, or in self defense, cats will bite back. If you find yourself in a situation where your cat is biting playfully, but it is causing you some pain, blow air in their face. They do not seem to like this very much, and will back away.

If your cat is biting you out of aggression, and you cannot get it off, grab it by the scruff of it's neck, like a mother cat would do, and try to ease him/her off of you. Do not hit your animal, unless you know that it could seriously harm you.

I hope you have found this instructable useful, and that it hopes you to get your cat purring. If your fluffy friend ever does attack back though, please follow the directions above, and then call your local hospital, and animal control if the situation gets out of hand.

I hope you have enjoyed this instructable!

I love feedback and comments, and positive ratings are appreciated!

i would like to add that female cats that have had kittens may get annoyed by scratching at the base of there tail and when a cat likes you in the middle of you peting them it may mean they want you to groom them aka pet them where they cant like themselfes and if a cat hissses at you during peting try puting your hand near there mouth and nose if they continue hissing and they jerk their head back they thats a sigh you should back of and leave them alone

Really outstanding photography as well as advice! I have 4 indoor cats and an unspecified number that live in the back yard. There is nothing as stress-relieving and mentally uplifting as a cat's purr. Some cats get over-stimulated when petted and latch on to you with teeth and claws; you can often just stop petting them and they will let go.

I had a cat the exact same way. Not only that, but she would simply lay down and purr. She would purr in her sleep, when she woke up, when she met someone new, all the time. By the way, Gunk on floor, GREAT instructable. I gotta try this.

You can also swat them on the hind legs, which does not hurt them but makes them back off.

Both my cats hate flea collars. We found that out when they were kittens. We'd let them go outside and they'd come back without the collar.

How cute!
My cats unfortunately have flees despite the fact that they both have flee collars and don't go outside. The only upside of this, though, is that my orange kitty (looks a lot like Oliver, actually) starts purring when I start searching him for flees and picking them out. I think he knows I'm trying to help him. It's really very cute. =)
My other kitty, his sister, always seems really happy and affectionate, but rarely purrs. The only time she purrs is if she's kneading and licking a fuzzy blanket/pillow/jacket. The rest of the time, she just looks really happy. o,o

Nice instructable, though. I wish I could get my sister to read the part about "don't force the cat to stay with you"...

Dump the flea collars, they are a waste of money. My preference is Advantage and you can buy it for about a third of the vet's price when you order it online. Fleas cause your cats to have worms when they swallow them and they carry diseases and bite you as well as the kitty. They are horrible little monsters and you should destroy them in your house by all means possible!!!! Your kitty will bless you and probably purr even more.

don't use flea collars. use Advantage or similar products - talk to your vet about them. AVOID ANYTHING BY HARTZ.

you know those videos that are really quiet and you are supposed to be looking for something and then a scary image pops up and some loud noise happens and you poop your pants? yeah, you should definitely make one of those using that yawning kitty picture.

Great ible! I am glad I am not the only crazy cat person! I loved your point about not forcing the cat to accept your attentions, it's so true, mine are all very gentle, affectionate cats and I think its down to them being treated with respect. I have found that one of my cats likes being patted firmly - not roughly around her back and hips, she's quite a sturdy creature so I would adjust your firmness accordingly. The other two don't seem to like it so much, but she does and it makes her go wild. Shes curled up by the fire at the mo so I am going to give all your methods a go.

What a beautiful cat Oliver is! Thank you for all the info which is very interseting and also for sharing Oliver with us. My cat is called Bren. She is small, white, with black patches on her back, a black tail, black eyebrows and black tipped ears. She has one green eye and one blue. She too is beautiful. Bren purrs especially when I go to bed. She jumps up onto the bed and rolls over expectantly waiting with half closed eyes for me to rub her tummy in the places you suggest. During the day when she requires this loving she mostly rolls over on her back in that crescent shape you mention for more rubbing. She likes her tail being pulled gently thru my fingers and of course, the tickling behind the ears and on the top of her little head. I've heard that cats have glands on the sides of their heads which is why they like us to rub them there, but not sure as to the authenticity of this.
