How to open a coconut

The Coconut is surrounded by a large cover of bast which we must get rid off before we can open the coconut.

To do so hammer thin slices into the bast hood of the coconut (picture 1). The bast hood is really strong so make your slices thin.
If you finished hammering your slice rip it off (picture 2 and 3).

Repeat the hammering/ripping steps until your coconut is completely bare.

You'll be surprised how small the coconut is compared to the bast cover, at least i was (picture 4).

Note: To rip the bast cover off you can also use a chopping knife or something bigger, but I love my fingers (all ten of them) and this would also add another tool to our material list.

Hey, thanks for demystifying this for me! I just picked 8 coconuts from the trees in our yard in Mexico. Using just the claw side of the hammer I stripped those babies down. Then I used a power drill to make small holes in the nut -- one at each pole -- and the water just poured right out. It made a half-gallon of coco water and about a pound of the sweet meat. I found that after draining the nut of its water, the hollow nut is easy to crack into 2 halves, like little bowls, by smacking it against a hard surface. It cracks right around its little equator almost every time. Now, on to the coconut ice cream!

Wow! That is thick!

Here is one more correction for you (in bold):

Note: To rip the bast cover off you can also use a chopping knife of (did you mean "or", not "of"?) something bigger, but i love my fingers (all ten of them) and this would also add another tool to our material list
