Now that you have the paper over on the other side of the door lower it down until you can see it under neath the doorway
you should be able to see the paper. if you cannot grab it with your fingers then a captured hanger works great to fish it out.

hahahahah this wont work on most door, but it's hilarious you actually made it work on a single one. Great stuff ! Make me laugh honestly.
I stumbled on this method and IT WORKED! I got locked out of my closet and my brother got me in!! Ingenious!! The only thing he changed was he wound duct tape around part of the chord where he thought it would land in the knob.(so it would attach easier)..it took a while and then it popped open! Come to find out that I had 2 purses hanging on the knob which made it even more difficult, but he did it!!
agreed, we have a twist button lock where the knob locks up, so the rubber cord is not able to turn the knob at all
I suspect your door handle plate has been taken off at sometime (maybe just to confuse any house-breakers). When you unscrew the door plate you will probably be able to withdraw the square (usually) shaft that goes thru' the door and goes into the other handle socket. Simply withdraw the shaft, turn it round to the desired position and screw everything back as it was! Job done! (You may find the shaft is 'captive' on one side or the other of the door. It will only be held by a little screw. Undo it. Turn the shaft to desired position. Put back together again. Don't forget to put the little locking screw back!) Hope that solves your problem.
