How to pick a good airsoft gun for yourself.(and a secondary)

 by jakerox43

Step 2: What gun will I get?

UMP.jpg
You obviously want something that will work with your fps range, price range, and usage expectations. When looking for a gun (see next step), remember that usually they act how they look, meaning that a sniper rifle looking gun will snipe, an assault rifle will be automatic or semi-auto and still be accurate, and so on. Remember your FPS range, price range, and looks too. It's helpful to write it all down, and have a picture.
For example, if you like 200-250 FPS, the Steyr AUG series, and want a fully automatic weapon, then that will help you later on, in the next step.

What about this?

Tactical Series Version 2
SD96 Full Metal Bolt Action Airsoft Sniper Rifle

jakerox43 (author) in reply to wwarren07Aug 20, 2012. 4:38 PM
You could just send links instead....

but I generally don't recommend bolt actions in airsoft. That price, however, is pretty crazy.
CallsignRiptide in reply to jakerox43Sep 24, 2012. 5:52 PM
I agree with this. Bolt action sniper rifles are not that efficient in Airsoft. There are many internal (your gun) and external factors in Airsoft that affect the trajectory of a BB. Using a Sniper rifle, you only have exactly one shot before you alert your target of your presence. Your shots may not be 100% consistent each time, and with AEGs or Gas guns, you have the ability to put multiple rounds down-range in a short amount of time, therefore increasing the likelihood of hitting your target.

is this any good?

King Arms COLT M4 CQB-R Carbine Full Metal Airsoft Gas Blowback GBBR Rifle
jakerox43 (author) in reply to wwarren07Aug 19, 2012. 6:21 AM
Depends what you want it for. Skirmishing against hicap AEGs? not so much.
Playing in cold weather? not so much.
Don't like paying $36+shipping for each 50 rd mag? Not so much.

I consider GBBRs as something of a novelty. If you really want one, get it, but just know what you're getting into.
nightmarefiend says: Aug 11, 2011. 8:19 AM
as far as what gun you want goes i would recommend gas gun if you get an aeg most likely you will be paying more for bb's than you would for a small propane tank and require less maintenance. although i did own that ump did better than i expected although i did end up having issues with the pins falling out *wonders why normal screen name was taken*
jakerox43 (author) in reply to nightmarefiendAug 15, 2011. 7:51 PM
And with gas, have fun playing on a cold day....
Molybdenum in reply to nightmarefiendAug 15, 2011. 6:54 PM
If you play with gas only you will find your self at a serious disadvantage to the majority of airsoft players, as they will be using an AEG that can maintain full auto with no shoot down and use hi caps.

Also, AEGs can go 100k round with no maintenance beyond a barrel cleaning.
nightmarefiend in reply to MolybdenumAug 18, 2011. 2:02 PM
yes an AEG can maintain full auto. however beyond a support role i don't see a point in it. AEG maintenance is more difficult in my opinion oh and 100k rounds goes fast sustaining full auto.

jakerox i don't play in weather below 30 allot but have never had an issue with the guns internals freezing. the small propane tanks used for camping will work with a propane adapter and cost 5$

my final note on AEG hi caps can be useful but there are quite a few fields that will not allow them

everything i have said concerning quality are strictly opinions and you should research anything you are going to buy thoroughly in order to decide if it is right for you and where you would like to play the game

Whatever makes you happy is the best!
jakerox43 (author) in reply to nightmarefiendAug 11, 2011. 2:57 PM
I think AEGS are still fine. if you want to spend less, use lo caps or shoot less... what you save on bbs with gas will be spent on gas anyway. but whatever works for you, there's no universal right answer.

The Crosman Pulse R72 and H&K G36C are excellent Assault Rifles for their price. Just for your info.
zack attack in reply to hunter1125Jun 16, 2011. 9:08 AM
don't buy crosman. they give airsoft a bad name.
hunter1125 in reply to zack attackJul 3, 2011. 1:00 PM
Most of their guns are junk, but you just need to get the right ones. The Pulse R72 performs very well, but isn't durable.
hunter1125 in reply to hunter1125Jul 3, 2011. 1:08 PM
The Crosman Stinger S34P Airsoft Shotgun is an excellent gun as well. Besides that and the Pulse R72, I don't suggest any other Crosman products.
jakerox43 (author) in reply to zack attackJun 16, 2011. 11:08 AM
Crosman is more of a pellet gun company, it's true.
And the G36c depends on which company make it. There are pieces of junk and some that are very high end. The gun it's modeled on has nothing to do with its quality in airsoft.
hunter1125 in reply to jakerox43Jul 3, 2011. 1:01 PM
H&K makes the G36C model I am talking about. Check it out at dick's sporting goods.
hunter1125 in reply to hunter1125Jul 27, 2011. 9:24 AM

jakerox43 (author) in reply to hunter1125Dec 29, 2010. 7:29 PM

techman9 in reply to brickman93Jan 18, 2011. 11:52 AM
Got one about a year ago and im super happy with it. but i has great range and high power its great for CQB but pretty good in a woodland seanario too.
redcomet002 says: May 5, 2010. 9:25 PM
most midrange guns are running 350 fps anyway. but you want to keep in mind that most inexpensive guns have plastic gears and CANNOT be upgraded in any way, so it's better to stick with something with a metal gearbox
X3R0117 says: Mar 11, 2010. 5:14 PM
when you get a little more moderate, try getting about 350 F.P.S. i got a 350 FPS for about 40$ on pyramid air. beware though, the cheap ones sometimes have faults. the feed on mine leaks. need to get that fixed.
Fridge Gnome says: May 20, 2009. 12:38 PM
you should still check what the gun is type wise because there are some m16 and m4s that are spring and some snipers that are full auto
jakerox43 (author) in reply to Fridge GnomeMay 21, 2009. 5:11 AM
very true, thanks for pointing that out. i have a friend with a full auto dragunov and a springer m4.

200fps is low, if your a beginner then 200fps, is a good starter amout, for a really new person, it will be hard to hit people that are a little distance away.

200 FPS is low no matter what, 300fps is about the lowest you want to go for a good gun
jakerox43 (author) in reply to Fridge GnomeSep 13, 2009. 5:06 PM
200 fps is fine if you are starting. BBs will go approximately 60 feet, which is fine. You may want to upgrade later but i'ts fine for now. And if you can send me a link to the gun you may buy, please do. I'll make sure it's worthy. But remember, test before you buy. Fire, reload, try to jam it. Then, if you still like it, go for it.
Chowmix12 in reply to jakerox43Aug 17, 2010. 8:21 AM
200fps is good for things like airsoft wars in the backyard or so.. 300+ fps is good for airsofting at actual fields and legit games... Just because someone likes to play with 200fps guns doesn't mean that they are noobs.. that just means that they don't want to spend a lot of money in this type of game.
