Tired of bad DVD burns? Wii laser die out on you? Want to rip Wii games directly from your Wii's dvd to your hard drive? This instructable is perfect for you! With this instructable, you will be able to play all your favorite Wii games on your Wii from a usb stick or usb hard drive!

Hardware requirements:
3.4 or earlier Wii firmware
Large usb stick or usb external usb hard drive.
Computer with usb ports

Software requirements:
The Homebrew channel
WBFS manager 3.0 or later
rev 10 installer with usb loader
Wii game iso
(OPTIONAL: All region Wii game covers.)

I am not the author of these program, I am not responsible for any damage you make to your Wii, computer, yourself, other people around you, your dog, you get the picture. The programs are only for playing backups of games you already own.###

Step 1: Install WBFS Manager.

Picture of Install WBFS Manager.

Download these files:

Uncompress the WBFS Manager rar file with 7-zip.
Click on the WBFS Manager setup icon.
A new screen will pop up and tell you that the program will install WBFS Manager on your computer. Click next.
It will then ask you to save to files in a folder. Either choose a folder or leave it on the default folder.
Click next. It will now tell you that it is ready to install to your hard drive. Click Next to begin the installation process. When it is done installing press "Close."

Step 2: Download the Wii Iso to Your Usb Device.

Picture of Download the Wii Iso to Your Usb Device.

This next step explains how to load a Wii ISO to you usb device.

The first step is to get a Wii iso backup file. (I can't tell you where.)

Plug in your usb device in your computer . Click on the WBFS Manager 2.5 icon on your desktop. A new scree n will open. Use the drop-down tab under "Edit" in the upper left corner to choose your usb device drive letter.

(WARNING: Be very careful not to format your hard drive! Make sure you're drive number is right!)

Now click format to delete the contents on your USB device and change the format to WBFS.

(Note: You will not be able to use the USB drive only to store Wii isos because the computer operating system doesn't recognize the WBFS format).

After you're done formatting click the "Load button to load the contents of your USB device. It's empty.

Click the "Browse" button in the lower right corner to open a new window, locate your Wii ISO, click it, and click "Open" in the lower right corner.
It will take a few seconds to load. You should see it in the right half of the WBFS Manager window. Hover your mouse over it to see it's game cover.
Now click "Add to Device" to compress your Wii ISO and add it to your usb device.
It will take about 5 minutes to upload the file to a usb device.
After it's done, either close the program and take your usb device out of your computer and go to the next step, or add more games to your usb device.

Step 3: Install USB Loader Application on Your Wii Homebrew Channel.

Picture of Install USB Loader Application on Your Wii Homebrew Channel.

This next step will explain how to usb loader on your Wii.

Before you can install usb loader to your Wii you first need the files in your SD card.

Unrar the usb hack rar file with Winrar or 7-Zip and copy the contents of the "Copy contents to root" folder to the root of your SD card. Pretty self explanatory. If you get a window asking you to merge folders click yes. Now comes the tricky part.

(Optional: You can also download the covers for the games.
The reason I say it's optional is because it contains over 1300 game covers and will occupy 100 MB in your SD card. But it's convenient to have so you don't have to squint to read the game text on the tv. Just download it, uncompress the Covers zip file with 7-ZIP and drag the covers folder to the usb-loader folder in the root on your SD card.. You will get a prompt to merge folders and click yes )

Remove any Gamecube memory cars and Gamecube controllers from the Wii.
Insert the SD card into your Wii, turn the Wii on and go to the Homebrew channel.

Click on "cIOS36rev10" and click load. The screen will go black for a second and you will then be in the cIOS36rev10 installer. Use the directional arrows to choose WAD installation and click A. After a few minutes it will have completed the installation of cIOS rev 10.
Now, restart your wii, go back to the Homebrew channel, and go to Wad Manager 1.3 and click load.
Choose the SD card, press A, then choose the WAD "USBLoadermodBrisma.wad" and press the + button on your Wii remote. After a few moments it will have completed installing the USB channel.
Press "HOME" on your Wii remote to restart your Wii.

Step 4: Install USB Loader Channel in Your Wii.

Picture of Install USB Loader Channel in Your Wii.

This step will explain how to install the usb loader channel to your Wii menu.

First go to the homebrew channel then load the WAD manager.

The screen will go green for a second and you will see a disclaimer on the screen. Press "A" on your Wii remote to continue.
Use your left and right directional arrows on your Wii remote to select SD card.
Now you will see a USBLoadermodBrisma WAD file.
Use the down key to select it and press "+" on your Wii remote to install it.
After it finishes installing, press your HOME button te restart the Wii.
On your Wii menu there should be a new channel called usb loader channel.

Step 5: Using the USB Loader Channel and Playing Your Games.

Picture of Using the USB Loader Channel and Playing Your Games.

In this next step I will explain how to use your new Channel, and how you can play your games on it.

First, plug your usb device into your Wii usb slot and start the USB loader channel.

Here are the controls for the USB loader channel:

"+" button: Lets you install a game. (I haven't figured out how this works.)
"-" button: Lets you delete a game.
"A" button: Lets you select and start a game.
"B" button: Lets you go back to menu if you choose the wrong game.
"1" button: Forces the game to play in PAL mode.
"2" button: Forces the game to play in NTSC mode.

Next, use the left and right directional arrows to choose "USB mass storage device", and click A.

It will load all the games on your USB drive and if you downloaded the covers it will show you their cover. Use the up and down directional arrows and press "A" to choose your game. Press "A" again to load your game and press "A" one last time to play your game.

If you have any problems just ask it in the comments below.

Step 6: Troubleshooting.

I finally had the time to write the solutions to some Wii error codes. If at any time you Wii spits an error code at you, here two of the most common errors, and their solutions.

Common error codes and solutions:

Error Code:ret= -1
Cause:You are missing a Cios (249, 222 or something like that)
Solution: Install Cios 249 or 222, or whatever cios is needed by the usb loader you are using.

Error Code:ret= -2011
Cause: A signing bug that allowed the execution of code was patched by /nintendo is system menu 4.0 and higher.
Solution: Run trucha bug restorer to restore the exploit on your Wii.

For the errors that I didn't bother to write down, here is a list of common Wii errors and their solutions:

xpreudhomme23 (author)2016-11-27

I bought a modded wii on ebay. It came with all the retro games and 15 wii and gamcube games. Evrything loaded on a sd card. I am trying to play games from Usb but i cant figure out how to get usb loader to recognize the usb also instead of just the sd.
Please help

Ben JadeP (author)xpreudhomme232016-12-29

Hi, in case you haven't got this sorted I had the same problem-I had the external drive in the wrong usb slot. It needs to be in the one closest to the edge of the wii. I have yet to get a thumb drive to work but my external hard drive works perfect now ;--)

jackcraclepop16. (author)2016-12-21

the mega upload links are down can you reupload

Dimitrius789 (author)2016-10-13

So I did everything correctly, (As far as I can tell), I used USB Loader GX,

When I try starting up my ISO files it just somehow redirects me to the Homebrew channel. Help?

SamiS40 (author)2016-07-30

hi i dont know how to get iso file can anyone tell me how?

DismissedGuy (author)SamiS402016-08-02

Search on internet: (game name) wii iso

deadpool77 (author)DismissedGuy2016-08-05

He's right. You can get iso games from

AksharP1 (author)2015-10-09

I am using usb loader gx. I followed all the steps perfectly. However, the channel does not recognise my usb drive. I'm using a 16GB Kingston Pendrive. What should i do? The whole thing used to run well when i used my hard disk.

dstewart7 (author)AksharP12016-06-13

wii only recognizes 2gb or less

TechProUSA (author)dstewart72016-06-27

actually it should work because i have a 500gb drive on my wii and have 220 games stored.

FabianW4 (author)2016-04-19

i cant find my files in wbfs please help me :(

KentG13 (author)FabianW42016-06-11

If you have the iso file and need to convert it, Wii backup manager can convert it.

Then on the root of the hdd make a folder wbfs and stick the game in there.

CalebB32 (author)2016-06-03

i did all of this just to realise the darn thing crashes upon startup...

bobp7 (author)2015-06-24

I'm stuck on step 3; I couldn't download the rev 10 installer, the link seems to not work. I tried other sites but I also couldn't download from them. I do have the latest version of it (cIOSX_rev21-Installer), though I don't know what to do. I tried to install it, but some attempts ended up failing and some left the Wii frozen. Do I have to install rev 10 or can I just load my backup games on USBLoader without installing it? Any detailed instructions would help.

sander339 (author)2015-05-20

i have installed it correctly and the HBC sees the games on the HDD, but if i open a game and click on play, i see a black screen and the wii freezes. I have to disconnect the power cable and reattach it.

Can anyone help me with this?

MikeyB2 (author)2015-03-29

Yo, I hear the the WBFS manager has the option to download covers from the internet. This is not working... Am i supposed to use a .Png file? Or Something else?

I'm very confused...

Santos66 (author)2015-03-15

I get an error when I try to format the usb drive. Help?

darokios (author)2013-12-10

No matter how fast your computer is its the flash drive's speed that matters the most

donkeyknee (author)2013-07-18

Thats extremely good...

roperdoug (author)2012-02-20

I'm new at this. I have my black Wii with 4.3U modded with Homebrew and am able to play games loaded onto a 16 gb USB Flash drive. I use WBFS Manager to load the games. I have loaded two games ISOs which are 4.5 GB no problem. But I have other ISOs the same size that will not load. I know the WBFS are partitioned. I had three games loaded and all three runs. Why do some load and others not?

catcha_fallinstar69 (author)2012-01-07

I really want to be able to play free games but I have a couple questions before I do i have to mod my system in order to play downloaded games? and if i do mod my system will i still be able to do everything i could before on it? such as play store bought games? please somebody help :(

Index32dc (author)2011-12-22

Must I downgrade from 4.3u to get a USB Loader to work? Please can someone help me either way with a step-by-step tutorial.

vishalapr (author)2011-09-19

Does anyone want me to make a tutorial for the 4.3 wii or can you easily follow the website I posted in here this ible previously...

Index32dc (author)vishalapr2011-12-21

I hoping you have a tut and the links to download tools for installing the usb loader for 4.3u, this tutorial(which I have tried hoping it works) doesn't and gives my the blank screen and controller goes out of sync, when I try to run the IOS36-64. I have soft mod HBC 1.0.8 created through letterbomb method. and have had no other issues. I have used the HomeBrew Browser to download many appz some which also have an issue with the v4.3. Any help would be greatly appreciated

gwatts1 (author)vishalapr2011-11-28

Can i have a tut for a 4.3e wii please. i am using wiiflow and have a 1gb usb stick i have a 8gb sd card with wiiware on and i am getting a 1tb hard drive to plug in to usb port 2 but i want a tutorial that tells me how i can run the wii system off the 1gb usb stick as i don't know how to transfer the data to the usb stick and get it to read from it .....please anyone can you help a noob

vishalapr (author)gwatts12011-11-29

I made it :)

Here is the link :

Hope you will like it

gwatts1 (author)vishalapr2011-11-30

cheers for that :)
i dumped my nand on to the 1gb stick last night but it appears there are no gamesaves or channels on the dump. i want my 1gb stick to have to have channels and gamesaves on so when i boot up my wii it loads all my channels and gamesaves from the usb stick 1gb is ample for what i need.

the 1tb hard drive im buying will be for my wbfs game files, how many would i get on a 1tb about 200?

thanks again for your help

vishalapr (author)gwatts12011-11-30

*Try comment on the ible coz others might have similar problems so they can solve it by the answers thanks :)*

In 1 TB hard drive about 350 games can fit, as I have a 500 GB hard drive and by using wii WBFS manager, I can fit about 200 games and it just depends on the game :)

Super smash bros takes 7.2 GB where as wii sports only takes 700 MB .

Using WBFS manager is good coz it scrubs the files before adding them to the dirve (Removing unwanted junk as publishers add extra junk to get the capacity to standard wii disk of 4.3 GB) and then it will add it to the disk which saves a lot of space :)

On my ible could you recommend me some good wii games like 10 -15 thx :)

gwatts1 (author)vishalapr2011-11-30

on a different matter my brother in law soft modded his wii but some reason priiloader enabled system updates so when his daughter put the wii on she accepted the disk update, the wii is not bricked, however neogamma no longer works and i don't think he has a back up nand. is it possible to fix?

ozart (author)2011-12-19

msørensen5 (author)2011-12-10

This doesn't work!!!
My screen goes black, for infinity hours, when i load the clos3610 thing, and with the WAD Manager!!!

vishalapr (author)2011-09-19

Once you have homebrew installed, download this the GBAX wad for the wii and istall it via the wad manager in your HBC.

ijaredguard (author)2011-09-09

I have used WBSFS to upload an iso file into my usb but it wont install in my wii. What else do I need to do? I already have homebrew installed.

vishalapr (author)ijaredguard2011-09-19

What do you use for it?! wiiflow or configurable usb loader or what?!

vishalapr (author)2011-08-12

I use wii flow because I thought it was faster and more awesomer...
Now they have realeased a new softmod...its letterbomb, works for Wii version 4.3 and no game disk required!!!!

nerdtaco (author)vishalapr2011-08-15

Letterbomb works great, but good luck getting wbfs games to run on 4.3

pburgess4 (author)nerdtaco2011-09-15
