you need to wait until the pimple has white on the tip! DONT CUT IT!!! if it doesn't pop you will just have to wait a couple days.

I posted this in response to the other RocketScientist2015 instructable, and finding out the information made a big difference to me, so I want to pass it on:
I happened to read a "skin care" book (a heavy duty one by some dermatologist or another) and came across, among all the dietary suggestions, this GEM of information:

Many commercial "anti-pimple" cremes are -inflammatory- agents because they act to dry out the natural oils of the skin and have astringent ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astringent ) properties that pucker the visible pimple site's size for a time, but irritate the skin to cause pimples to continue to return (especially cremes with sulfurous drying agents, as I recall).

The advice of the book was, DO NOT USE ASTRINGENT ANTI-PIMPLE CREAMS, they'll clear things up for the short term but make the pimples return long term. USE ANTI-BIOTIC CREME!
After this common sense revelation, I started using Neosporin instead of the anti-pimple creme that I had tried before, and the change over worked wonders, I really recommend it.

additional steps. step 0. Put a drop of spit on the zit. When dry (3 minutes later), repeat. Continue all afternoon. Keep the area moist with your own spit. The water will get absorbed, plumping up the pimple, making it ripe for popping. This is especially effective for deep or pimples on older people with dryer skin. step 4. To avoid infection afterwards, wash area thoroughly with warm water and soap, and then rub Neosporin antiseptic ointment into the area.

I agree with the neosporin, but for heaven's sake, spit is a hive of bacteria, using spit will just perpetuate the problem, at least use water or don't bother.

Popping pimples by squishing them is very risky, they can get infected.
Apr 26, 2008. 12:52 AMPrometheus says:
Pustules (pimples) are infections by definition, usually of trapped sebum blocked by shed dermal cells combined with sebaceous oils clogging the pore, creating a waxy-cheesy plug at the outside of the pore. This then harbors bacteria and the levels of bacterial activity stimulate an immune response, with white blood cells leaking into the pore through the inflamed sebaceous gland, creating pus. Pus is only created by white blood cells (or "T" cells) binding to and "tackling" potentially infectious materials, including bacterial incursions into the body. You can't infect an infection, and occasionally such an infection needs outside intervention or it will spiral out of control when it gets too large for the dermal organ to handle on it's own locally. If it comes to the surface, such as a whitehead, the dermis is trying to reject it anyway. Soapy water will suffice for cleaning up after popping any pimple, followed by a simple ointment treatment for at least two treatments every 6 hours, not to exceed 3 treatments in 24 hours. Often the size of the pimple is simply a reactive inflammation, and once the source is removed, it settles within 1-3 hours, and does not scar as long as you didn't squeeze too hard or use a needle and pierce flesh otherwise best left alone.

i hate pimples!! they suck, but i have kinda ripped them "by accident' and then squeezed them, but tht leaves scars, so i use a really good cream called Benzol-Pyroxide. I'm very proud of myself: at this very moment i have a HUGE pimple on my cheek, but im refraining from popping or ripping it, cuz it leaves scars...dont pop ur pimples!!

Sometimes not popping a pimple will result in a very noticeable scar, where popping it might have stopped it from scarring in the first place. Remember that a pimple is an infection that can get out of control, often because the pus inside simply fuels a greater immune reaction. It becomes a self-sustaining disaster. Popping pimples does not create more, not cleaning up afterwards (or cleaning too much) causes more. Also, depending on age, your hormones are causing an excess of keratin to be expelled from your sebaceous glands causing the acne in the first place. Popping one pimple that creates another is pure myth sustained in 1960's anecdotal science. There's good bacteria and bad bacteria on your face at all times. The good bacteria do not cause acne, and actually attack the bad bacteria, keeping them in check. Kill all the bacteria, and the bad bacteria thrive quickest and thrive on your skin excretions without competition from the good bacteria in it's way. Now your acne is getting worse, and you further help them thrive by killing the bacteria there that retains balance because you scrub too hard, you use alcohol or hydrogen peroxide on your face undiluted....you are creating the problem more than solving it. Pop a zit before you shower, and don't scrub your face. If it's particularly bad, add ointment after you shower directly to the spot and leave it undisturbed. repeat twice a day until it is less than noticeable, and that's it....Sometimes it's better not to let them go....I should know from personal experience....

Do you know what the tool is called? Do you have one?
Apr 26, 2008. 12:23 AMPrometheus says:
They are called "blackhead removers" and are not particularly effective for blackheads that exist beyond the backsides of the flares of your nostrils. In most cases, wasted money not worth investing.

Here is the site for the tool. They seems somewhat expensive.

you can get them at my local drug store in the US, called CVS, I think they'd cost no more than tweezers or nail clippers.

The question was directed more at the author. His pictures from online and lack of terminology led me to think he may not have researched the topic thoroughly.

There is an awful lot of misinformation about helping clear acne in these instructables. Contrary to popular belief, being "dirty" does not cause acne, so scrubbing your face really hard will only irritate it. It is best to use a good, mild soap (I use cetaphil, as it is incredibly mild, non comedogenic and won't dry your skin out) To wash with. You don't need to "scrub" just wash like normal. Some topicals can help, but many of them dry out your skin too much and the irritation usually looks worse than the original pimple did!! Talk with your doc about this, as there are some good water based medications (such as Benzac W5) which are very mild to the skin and can help you dramatically. I had skin problems as a youngster, not really bad, but just bad enough that it bothered me. Until I figured out the real way to help myself. Now I am a 33 yr old man, and I have very good skin, and I have for many, many years now due to good information to help me. I do understand the need to pop one sometimes, but remember to be very cautious and don't force it, as this will only make it worse. Sometimes popping them can actually cause the bacteria to leak into adjacent pores and cause more pimples as well. Just keep these things in mind and be kind to yourself! Stress tends to play a part in acne formation as well, so try to reduce your stress levels as this may help you as well. People also seem to believe that chocolates, cokes, etc will cause acne, and this is not really true. Some foods may aggravate it, but it is not typical. If you notice certain foods seem to aggravate it, stay away from them!! Hope I could help some of you a bit. Cheers!!!! Jeff

This Instructible lacks in quality, I can't see how anyone would benefit from this, so don't expect to win anything. Instructables member RocketScientist2015 made a much better Instructible with actual photos.

I'm pretty sure somewhere in the rules it says you can't submit an 'Ible with photos found off the Internet either. You need to take a look at Eric's Instructible on how to actually create an Instructible before you proceed further.

In step 2-3 you recommend 'cutting' the whitehead off. That is probably not a good idea. (any cut to the skin will cause a scar as it scabs over and heals-- look at your hands and knees!) Instead, rub vigorously with a hot washcloth, buf-puf, or other relatively gentle abrasive material to encourage the whitehead (the layer of skin sealing the zit off) to break open, becoming a blackhead (open, poppable 'volcano' of a zit).

The easiest way is to put a wet/warm paper towel on it... it really works!
