Or you could just hold down the play button for a couple seconds...

I have to add something here, as I experienced an issue where my Nano 1st Gen would NOT turn off, even after doing a reset. The sleep mode only puts the unit to sleep, and does not turn it off. If you then clear the Sleep mode, it looks like pressing and holding the PLAY button turns off the unit... but it does not. Something is strange with this model. I've had this happen to me about a dozen times over the years of my ownership. I wish Apple would correct it with their updates (latest is 1.3.1), but I guess that is not their incentive... they want you to buy another. Anyway, the only way to clear it is to completely reset the unit, which is a LOUSY solution. >:-(

Two Problems. One,putting it to sleep is not even pretty much turning it off. Two, using the hold button wastes battery life, too.

You can do the same thing by simply holding down the play button. Your 'ible is only for sleep which still uses the battery. If you want to turn the thing off you have no option under ipod software it always uses juice. Try hacking your ipod with the Rockbox software there are 'ibles for that and they actually have a button that shuts the thing off.

What are you talking about?? The sleep option on the main menu dosen't turn it off, but it actually puts it to sleep.
