Introduction: How to Put an Elizabethan Collar on a Cat

This video is from Stratford Career Institute as part of their distance learning Veterinary Assistant Course. It demonstrates how to properly put on and take off an Elizabethan collar (also known as a space collar, or cone) on a cat. The purpose of an e-collar is to prevent cats from biting or licking a wound or injury.

Step 1: Measure Your Cat's Neck Size.

This will help you determine the size of e-collar you need and how tight you'll need to make the e-collar.

Step 2: Adjust the Collar to the Correct Size.

Different brands of e-collars secure differently. You might use your cat's regular collar, ribbon or gauze, or snaps to adjust the size and secure the shape.

Step 3: Put the Collar On.

Standing behind your cat, slide the smaller opening end of the e-collar over the cat's face and onto the neck. Adjust the collar accordingly. Gently pull the cat's ears forward. The collar should be snug, but not too tight.

Step 4: Removing the E-collar

Working from behind, loosen the collar. Slowly pull forward over the cat's ears and gently slide off.
